Sofa Bed - Any Opinion on Where to Buy a 'high Quality' One without The Price Tag?

Hiya,

Its been ages since we bought a sofa bed (20 years ago) and when we did the quality of both the 'sofa' and the 'bed' was really low. The sofa was uncomfortable & the bed was a wire frame that folded out from underneath with a wafer thin mattrass that squeaked all night & give anyone using it a bad back.

I would love to know if they have changed in 20 years, has anyone purchased one they are happy with & could offer some advice?

Thank you!

How could a sofa bed be high quality? The mattress has to fold up, so it won't be very thick or robust. Also, the dust mites and other critters will proliferate when the mattress is folded up as it won't be able to to air/dry out properly.

    • Well… something might have changed in the last 20 years of design :)

People who used them 20 years ago, now stick to beds. 😉

    • Higher quality options will have better wearing fabric, stronger frame, more comfortable inner cushioning that will keep better over time, thicker mattress (or better quality as not all sofabed mattresses are the same thin type) and the mechanism of opening and closing.

  • best option is a normal fold out and then stick a futon on the mattress. or a memory foam pad etc

  • Freedom have options with better quality mattresses, rather than the super thin mattresses.

  • Murphy bed

  • Koala. They'll throw in a free mattress topper if you request it. It's perfectly comfortable for sleeping but it doesn't have the support of a real bed so I don't feel as refreshed on it after a night's sleep. Compared to an average fold up sofa bed with the horror metal bar in your back it's excellent.

    • Fantastic suggestion, that looks exactly what I was after! Do you have one?

      • Yep.

    • How do you get a free mattress topper? Do you have to ask via the live chat before ordering? Putting a comment in the checkout?

  • I’ve done a lot of research. The koala is very low to the ground so not great for old people getting in and out of. Also I don’t think you can put a fitted sheet on it and not sure about the hygiene of the mattress sitting on the floor? (they always say don’t put mattresses on the floor for mould risk). The Freedom ones look OK. King Living also has an OK looking one. But they still seem to be that old school design and nothing amazing to be honest. I have been meaning to check out the crazy expensive Jardan one to see if it’s actually any better.

    • No real issue with fitted sheet on Koala.

      • Thanks, good to know. Do you think it’s risky for mould given the mattress sits on the floor?
