  • These any good? Anyone have one?

depends what you're going to use it for.
i wouldnt put a car transmission on it or hammer anything on it.

If you're doing embroidery or dress making, it should be fine.

The basic bench is pretty nicely constructed, I don't use it as a workbench really just storage. But I'd be confident putting a drill press or bandsaw or whatever on them. I have two of them, very easy to put together too.

The bench with pegboard looked a bit flimsy to me.

As a millennial, i am very excited to see this.

  • Random question - I feel like I have read about the Bunnings ones having a weird smell. I would be using this inside the house. Anybody experience that with these?

I have complained here about the cheaper Bunnings MDF shelves (Montgomery) having a weird smell, which is probably the off-gassing of the adhesives and other chemicals used in the construction of the MDF.

I've read plenty of advice, like leaving it out in the sun for a few days to let the gases dissipate etc. None of that worked. The only thing that worked was to seal the shelves with a timber finish. And I know it was the timber finish that worked because I had a couple of spare shelves untreated that continued to stink (they still do if you're up close, but it has taken months/years to get to that point).

However, the pricier brand from Bunnings (Pinnacle) doesn't have this problem.

  • This reminds me of the budget standing desk (work bench) option's that they have at CostCo in the US.
They are basically called "height adjustable work benches" and were like $150USD or something for the large one at over 2m wide, crank handle for raising and lowering and it came with wheels.
You just have to crank a handle to adjust the height and they looked solid as hell, but still very usable as a desk.
Edit: can't find it even at Costco US. It had a full frame with pillars that went all the way to the top.

Last time I checked I could only find the small 1m wide one at CostCo AU and they looked like they had been sold out for a long time. I probably would have tried a standing desk out if they had them for $250, $300 here in Australia.
