Is It Still Worthwhile to Port out of Telstra for When The 'Port into Telstra' Offers Come out?

I'm due for a new phone soon, and would like to take advantage of one of the offers that seem to come up at JB where you get $500 or whatever towards a new phone if you're porting into Telstra.

However, I'm wondering whether they are the best deals to wait for these days? It seems like they want you on the hook for a 24 month contract, which I'm not into. Is there a better way to get a discount on a new phone these days if I'm willing to wait for the right offer?

I'm on Belong currently and would prefer not to port to an Optus or Vodafone provider if I don't have to.

Been a while since a good 12 month offer from jb. Hanging out for another 500 / 12 month offer but belong has been fantastic for my 2nd phone.

    • It's just the issue of buying a new phone without paying full price…

      • what phone are you after?

if samsung probably best to look if you can get into either edu or corpo portals and maybe stack a trade in.

        • Actually not even sure. Currently on iPhone, but curious to go back to Android after a while in the Apple system. Kinda open to something decent no matter what it is.

  • You need to port out, usually, for a minimum of one bill cycle - so about 30 days, to be eligible for the bonus

    • Thanks - yes this is what I already know. I'm really just looking for thoughts on whether it's worth it to even bother any more, given the plans seem to be pretty expensive and 24 months.

  • If you don't want to port to Optus or Vodafone then you are stuck.

Telstra deals exclude you from porting out and back in the same day if alread on Telstra or Boostmobile.

For me its worth going pre-paid on a crappier Optus/Vodafone carrier for a few months to avoid the crazy porting away and porting back in process. Plus the good Telstra deals only last a weekend or maybe a fortnight so you have to decide and act quickly.

On OzB there are frequently 1 month prepaid deals with huge cashbacks.
Or cheap Kogan mobile deals. Best is OzB deals for 100% off or profit from cashback.

When I am in the same situation I'm lazy and just buy spare prepaid SIMs from Coles/WW as they sometimes have 67% to 75% off on Lebara, Vodafone, Optus prepaid. The supermarket SIM cards usually have 3 months to 6 months before expiring.

I love the Telstra network but I ended up upgrading my Samsung S9 on Boostmobile (Telstra prepaid) to this expired Optus deal, Samsung Galaxy S22 128GB $0 Upfront on Optus 60GB/M $49/M Plan for 24 Months @ Harvey Norman, Domayne, Joyce Mayne

    • I don't mind porting to Optus or whoever - I live in metro so no big deal either way. Just didn't want to do it unnecessarily.

  • i left Telstra to Optus for their 50% off the $59 plan months ago, it was the worst 2-3 months of my life, i couldn't wait to get back to telstra

    • oh wow. ok. maybe i'll stick around.
