Not me - I've got the 2.6kg bulk bottle from Kegland (and it's great) which is vastly cheaper per use.
does the container take much space?
Yeah, a bit, so I'm about to install it in the cupboard below the bench and run the hose up through a hole I'll drill in the countertop.
I got a 2.6kg bottle but the outlet didn't have the adaptor so I just fill up one of the kegland cylinders. Super easy and I can fill a couple of sodastream branded cylinders (they're a little harder to fill) so when the big one runs out I have some time to get it filled.
Amateur! I've got 2 x 6kg
Yeah, the 6KG is too tall to fit under our countertops IIRC, so the small one it was :-)
Why would you need 4, the whole idea is to swap and go and recycle them. I find rotating two works well.
I just use Billy Bubbles.
$10 refills and they have more gas in them than the original sodastream, so last longer.
any idea the difference in cost vs a 2.6kg bulk bottle from Kegland?
No idea, I've only ever used the original sodastream or billy bubbles.
Initial outlay:
$69 for a 2.6kg bottle => $26.5/kg via KL
$25 for 450g bottle => $55.5/kg via BillyRefill:
(KL lists $20 on their site, I pay $33 in SA, let's err on the high side @$30) => $11.5/kg
$10 for 450g => $22/kgKL offers solutions to fill your sodastream bottles from the 2.6kg bottle ($19 https://www.kegland.com.au/sodastream-cylinder-filling-adapt…) OR to plumb the 2.6kg bottle into the sodastream ($50 https://www.kegland.com.au/freedomone-sodastream-adapter-hos…, double that length for $60)
You break even very quickly with KL. Very hefty mark up with Billy Bubbles for the door to door convenience, contrast that to KL bottle having nearly 6x the capacity meaning you run out less often. KL bottle is heavier, but if you plumb it in you only have to move it to fill it up (far less frequently)
Why not get the 6kg cylinder? Cheaper and even less transporting, no?
@wisdomtooth: Or 2
@M00Cow: Is it cheaper with 2?? The site says you need to buy eight (8) for volume discounting to start kicking in, at 14%, and whopping eighty-four (84!) for 20%. That's clearly for bars and pubs, not retail consumers.
@wisdomtooth: No, just easier to swap over when empty.
@wisdomtooth: Too big for a lot of spaces
@mickeyjuiceman: I can easily fit a 6kg one in my garage; that's not a safety hazard, is it?
@wisdomtooth: Wouldn't have thought so, it's only carbon dioxide. Ours is in the kitchen, so the 6kg starts to look real big in terms of fitting it in there
Billy Bubbles also have a referral system where you can get free delivery
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/billybubbles.com#refinfo8…
I use this group in sydney
https://bubble.delivery/
delivery is usually next day or the day after.$18 per refill ??
Pity they charge double ($20) to swap out other branded bottles. Stupid too; they should be paying, not charging, to gobble up their competition!
Still, way cheaper than their competition.
You don't need to swap. You can purchase one of theirs.
Why would I, if Spotlight is happy to sell me full SodaKING bottles for less??
@wisdomtooth: I do it so I don't have to waste $10 in fuel and 45 minutes for a return trip to Spolight.
Can also get it for $10 after these couple codes expire.
no BB in SA by the looks
Shame they're only available in Melbourne, so entirely useless to the rest of the country.
And it's at least $20 initially to get into their system via an exchange or new cylinder.
Shame they're only available in Melbourne
Maybe you can open a franchise?
And it's at least $20 initially
Costs more with the alternatives.
Just drink plain water, it's cost more for your teeth in the long run with these soda crap too.
@lgacb08: Oh, please, if CO2 were bad for out teeth, we couldn't even breath out through the mouth! No one sips sparkling water all day every day for carbonated water to have any effect on teeth enamel. If that were an argument against it, by the same token — and even more so! — lemon juice, oranges, apples and pretty much every other fruit — and fruit vegetables too! — tomatoes, capsicum, etc — should be equally discouraged. Imagine that!
@wisdomtooth: It's not QUITE as simple as that, but you do have to work at it to make it dangerous for dental health.
https://westrydedental.com.au/is-sparkling-water-good-for-my…
@mickeyjuiceman: Isn't it? Thanks for backing me up with references, @mickeyjuiceman (emphasis mine):
A study led in the International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry by researcher Catriona Brown at the University of Birmingham, suggests that many flavoured sparkling waters have corrosive effects on teeth similar to those of orange juice (which has been proven to erode enamel).
In the Birmingham tests, lemon, lime, and grapefruit were the most erosive flavours because they add citric acid to the water, which adds to the carbonic acid that is already present. Importantly, it is the added flavours that seem to be most dangerous.
Another study in the Journal of Oral Rehabilitation, however, showed that plain mineral water and most flavourless sparkling water do very little to damage teeth.
So what the science seems to add up to is that there is a slight chance that sparkling water can have an effect on your teeth, but even in the worst scenario, this damage will be equivalent to that of sugarless fruit juice.
And in most of the studies, teeth were submerged in sparkling water for extremely unrealistic periods of time.
Sparkling water presents a theoretical risk of tooth erosion, but the drinks would need to be consumed over an extended period and stay in the mouth for a very long time to have any substantial effect.
Having said that, I do do this (mainly bc I use one of those large insulated smoothie cups that come with a straw and a top, so less gas escapes while I drink):
Drink with a straw.
Isn't it?
Not really - carbon dioxide doesn't hurt teeth, but when it is injected into water at pressure, it creates carbonic acid, which can cause damage (although, as per the linked article, it's not easy to do).
@mickeyjuiceman: Yeah… nah. All theory, no facts (empirics). Just a bunch of hot air (and gas! 💨).
And that you reelected Comrade Dan!
No I didn't.
One one third of Vic voters voted for him…
case of Stockholm's Syndrome
Ask the minority who voted for him.
Shame they're only available in Melbourne
I missed that detail; thanks for pointing that out, @Srey. No wonder I had never heard of them.
Refill only. I tried in the previous sale but was asked to bring in the empty bottles.
Probably should have read this before I placed the order … oh well, will see what happens.
are these compatible with other soda makers like sodastream/ phillips?
Dunno about Philips, but my "machine" — if you can call it that! — is SodaStream.
Full bottle with gas is $28 - https://www.spotlightstores.com/kitchen/kitchen-appliances/s…
This is just for a refill.
Aright, "fixed."
Good but most people got Soda Stream Bottles I think, not sure if they are interchange or not
They are interchangeable (unless you have the new sodastream ones)
Sodastream have patented their new fittings to kill off their competition.
Despicable!
Is that the ones with the Threadless "quick fit" or whatever they call it?
It's even more of a pain cause when I checked a while ago there were bugger all retailers sticking those bottles.
Is that the ones with the Threadless "quick fit" or whatever they call it?
Yes, Billy Bubbles sent out an email explaining Sodastream have a patent on the fitting and are currently looking if there's anything they can do to get around it….
I'm planning to get Soda stream for the first time. which model do you recommend?
Get the cheapest; it'll have the old fitting. I did get the SodaKING "machine" initially, bc I didn't realise the fittings were exactly the same, and ended up getting rid of it — either gave or returned; can't remember — bc the SodaStream one I already had leaked less when carbonating the water.
Can't really if they sell the old/current machine's too. Sodaking on special from spotlight are better anyway, click and collect they don't ask for the old bottle on refills either.
they don't ask for the old bottle on refills either.
Yes they do. Otherwise they will be losing money.
@jv: Yes, they do.
@jv: They don't know WTF is going on every time you go in mate. Click and collect it's packaged up, just pick it up no questions asked.
They don't know WTF is going on every time you go in mate.
Just because a couple don't know does not mean that most won't.
They are required to get the empty cylinder, otherwise they are losing money.@wisdomtooth: That particular bot is fuelled by responses, which is why it reflexively responds as it does. Don't feed the trolls.
@jv: Thats their problem.
They have those 40% off sales all the time, so they are losing money.Anyway I just have two on rotation but gave a spare one to a mate so it's still being reused.
most people got Soda Stream Bottles I think
I don't. I started with SodaStream and quickly switched to SodaKING bc it was cheaper and bc it's Australian (vs Israeli, West Bank based, SodaStream).
not sure if they are interchange or not
Spotlight won't take Soda Stream bottles. I've tried, but soon found out they don't ask to take any bottles either.
"they don't ask to take any bottles either"
You mean for exchange?
You mean for exchange?
Most do ask…
I wonder if anyone actually keeps 4 cylinders?
