Tips and Tricks of Buying a Second-Hand Car

Hi all,

I am planning on purchasing a second-hand car online (carsales pref.) and was wondering how can I make a sure judgement on vehicles that may be damaged in ways which I won't be able to identify

I struggle purchasing high-valued items such as cars online due to not knowing the true status of the vehicle and if there are any underlying problems it may had.

Does anyone have any go-to ways to ensure the car they purchase is of sufficient nature (obviously take to mechanic) but any other suggestions you'd have to ensure the purchase does not end sideways ?

Sincerely,
A pessimistic teen

P.S: Looking at a CLA45 AMG 2015-17 for more info.

Get insurance before you drive off in it.

As a teen, gonna be very expensive premium for AMG.

Third-party property beats nothing. What if they drove into another AMG?

Im not sayings not to get insurance, OP should have some second thought about getting a AMG as a teen, and probably needs more than third party lol

  • Get a mechanical vehicle inspection as you have indicated. That’s the best you can really do. Oh and ppsr.

Here’s a few things you id recommend you do prepurchase

    • Ppsr to make sure it has a clear title
    • pay a mechanic for an inspection
    • research the model - as basic as a google search for “2xxx make model engine/transmission problems “. Amazing how many people don’t do this
  • Make sure it has and read the logbook for servicing. You can ring the service centre and with some harmless social engineering find out if it has any outstanding items.

Whe n you get the mech check - ask about accidents.

A teen choosing this, let me guess - high yield investment?

    Not sure if trolling.

    1. You do not buy a car ‘online’. You go and sit in it, drive it, take it to a mechanic if required BEFORE you talk price.
    2. You don’t buy euro cars out of warranty, especially ‘performance’ versions unless you’ve got money to burn.

I mean assuming you actually are a teen and so are on your P's, car's not even legal for you to drive anyway.

    Troll thread

  • Another high yield investor, I see.

    Full license <20yo? I don't think you'll be driving a CLA45 AMG on P plates…

  • Make sure it's got all four wheels. Some dodgy sellers will try it on with 3. Don't let them scam you.

Assume until PROVEN otherwise the seller is LYING to you about everything !

  • Get a compression test at least
