WTB: 2TB SATA SSD. Is There an OzBargain Favourite?

Hi Guys,

Currently have a 1TB Samsung 860EVO SSD which I use as a games drive. Running out of space I'm thinking of upgrading to a 2TB SSD (sata) and then using the 1TB as an OS SSD upgrade. I've been keeping an eye on OzBargain for deals but only ever see NVME drives. Do you guys see many SATA SSD deals pop up?

I considered the Samsung 870 EVO, umart have them for $245 (bit more $$ than I thought), or the Crucial MX500 $189 (umart, has almost 5k 4.7 star reviews). Thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

What do you need the space for?

If just games, just get a cheap mx500 or something. No need for "high end" sata ssd.

    • Yeh, it'll be pretty much a games drive. I'll keep an eye open for MX500 deals. Thanks :)

So the drive is just for games? You can save money with a budget drive if that’s the case.
For example 1.92TB Patriot Burst for $133
If you need a quality drive, I would have recommended MX500 in the past but it seems they have been found guilty of swapping parts with lower quality ones. It would still be better than the Patriot one above
I think maybe Samsung Evo 870 would be a high quality thought it’s typically much more expensive

    • Thanks for the feedback :). Does Ozbargain usually have sata ssd bargains pop up? I've only seen nvme drives. I'll check out the Patriot in the meantime. Thanks :)

SATA SSDs are becoming less and less relevant as NVMe supersedes it. There are much less options compared to NVMe and so also less deals.
You can browse the SSD Tag and maybe 1 in 10 deals are SATA

  • Same, also do you need a heatsink? I'm guessing not for games as you aren't writing / reading that much data?

    • Heatsink? Not for sata ssd's from what I've seen. Not sure about nvme drives though.

The ceiling for read/write on a sata drive is 6gbit because of the link speed, which puts it even below some of the worse nvme drives.

The form factor of 2.5 inch drives is also less convenient in this age, as most hardware will come with at least one nvme slot nowadays. Most laptops having moved on to 2280 or even 2230 form factor nvme drives, in addition to portable hardware like Steam Decks that will use a 2230. (Also have you seen the insides of some of the sata ssds? Many take up less than half of the actual space inside the casing)

I don't think I've seen the sata drives that much cheaper compared to their "better" nvme versions, either.

    • Thanks for the info, Nami :).

I thought about getting an NVME M.2 in the past, though I would need a PCI-E adapter ($10-$15) and I think I only have 1 slot to put it, if it would work. But, it's my understanding, my board is only PCI-E 2.0 so I wouldn't likely get the full benefits of NVME, even if the Gen3/4 nvme drives were backwards compatible, correct?

My motherboard is the Gigabyte Z68XP-UD5 (Rev.1.0) and according to the specs, it would need to be installed into the PCI-E 4x slot (last slot on the MB). Any suggestions in this department? If NVME + adapter would still work, I suppose I could transfer it to a new MB in the future if I upgrade.

      Thanks again :)

        Z68… That's like 2nd gen Intel Core, so… 12 generations old?

If NVME + adapter would still work, I suppose I could transfer it to a new MB in the future if I upgrade.

You'd probably have to rule out using it out as a boot drive due to mobo support, or at least there would be some questions as to whether it would work at all.

If you really wanted to upgrade the storage on that, a sata ssd wouldn't be a bad decision. I feel like both types are cheap enough that you can decide whether to get another when you upgrade the… everything. (I'm guessing you'd need new CPU/Mobo/Ram/PSU/Case, which is basically the entire thing.)

Given that 512GB ssd is about… 30-40 dollars at the bottom end.
