The Awkward Tension When Standing around with Other People Waiting for Roast Chickens at Costco

So they roast plenty of chickens at once, most times there's enough for everyone waiting, unless it's rush hour. But I still feel this weird tension, like dogs getting ready to fight over their food at meal time. Like I might have to fight someone for the chickens or else I'll miss out.

And the guy roasting the chickens, he must feel some of the weird tension too, working all day with people constantly wanting what he's got, milling about waiting for his chickens. The guy making the chickens must feel the same I do when I'm opening the cans to feed my dogs.

    • El Janna chicken > any other chicken

Maybe it varies per store but the one near me is consistently fantastic.

Nando’s is my favourite with Red Rooster fried coming in at second.

Oof putting Red Rooster in there…. That's always the worst chicken for me.

          • @imurgod: Have you tried their fried chicken? Red Rooster’s changed a lot in the past several years. I think most people have a poor opinion of Red Rooster because it was on the decline for a long time.

              @Ghost47: I haven't. I will today though. Cheers!

              • @imurgod: It’s crunchy and the main flavour is salt, but I’m a big fan. When it’s freshly fried it’s really good, but sometimes can be a bit too salty if the brine is too salty.

I was just thinking I’m gonna have to get some today too lol.

                • @Ghost47: The difficulty is the the red rooster in my area isn't far from El Janna

                  • @imurgod: Yeah fair enough. It’s always good to mix it up every now and then IMO.

            • @Ghost47: I have and the few time I have had it, it was piping hot and scalded my mouth.

No tickey no chickey … ticket system based on number of birds roasted

  • How much for chicken at cocko

    • Depends whether it crosses the road

    • Never heard of that store before. If they build them next to Red Rooster stores, they will have to drop the "s" to prevent bankruptcy.

    First world problems. facepalm

  • Hmm.. it's amusing there's no limit to kind of problems people having these days

    • +1

Ironic that you have a problem with that.

      • +1

        No, I'm amused

  • Chicken Run

  • I have witnessed this while shopping at 5.30-6pm on a weekday. Didn't want a roast chicken that day but still got one..

  • Costco roast chickens are the worst tasting chickens

    • +1

I like them. Yes they lack a lot of flavour and they are very juicy. But I find Colesworth chicken too dry, gives me hiccups after eating some. And you can add more flavour with like spicy mayo or whatever.

Tried my first one last week in WA, chickens are definitely on steroids 💪

Who on earth would feel tension or anxiety over waiting for a roast chicken ?

    • +1

Maybe OP has anxiety, should probably consider talking to their GP.

      • They need to do some really serious work on themselves if their getting anxiety over waiting for a serve of chicken.

    • The Chicken.

  • I've never been to CostCo. I still find it odd to buy a subscription to shop there. They have roast chickens? How much are they and how big are they? Any good?

    And hot dogs?

    • +1

$6.99 and they are huge. And juicy. Colesworth chickens are sickly thin in comparison.

And they sell 100% pork hotdogs for $1.99 and it comes with unlimited soda refills. They have mustard, ketchup, and relish dispensers and this machine that grinds onion onto your dog. Huge slices of pizza for $3. Thick boba iced tea for like $2 or $3 I forget. Massive Maccas style ice cream sundaes for $3.

Plus Costco set up sample stations at certain times of day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_is9JZX0sKA

      • 7 bucks???

Wow. Ok. Might have to consider this. Especially because I like to season a chook once i've got one (normally I smoke my own) but on a weeknight with some of my spices and rubs, perfect.

        • Because their chickens are so juicy they are perfect for sandwiches if you keep them in the fridge and slice the breast thinly when it's cold.

      • It isn't grinding onion. The onion is pre-ground. it just dispenses it.

    • Chicken hot dogs! now your talking…

    • How much are they and how big are they? Any good?

I find it odd you haven't read the comments before posting this question as it has been answered many times already.

    • Hot Dogs are great. you can also buy the frankfurts from the frozen section.

Membership/subscription is guaranteed income for them. 1 million members = 55-60 million dollars per year

  • I only go there when Queeney buys her stretch pants.

I feel an awkward tension just waiting in this thread

  • Get ChatGPT to help you turn this into a novel

  • This is interesting, makes me want to get a Costco membership just to check this out lol

  • At Canberra Costco when the chickens come out there's usually plenty. From memory there are 3 shelves, each shelf has 2 rows. The reheater probably holds 30 chickens. During busy periods the staff cook more than the shelf space so there is plenty to go around.

My tips for avoiding the crowd / tension is walk away and do fun stuff and come back when no queue. Eg. Enjoy a $2 hot dog, check out food samplers, do the rest of your Costco shop and pack groceries into car, get Costco petrol and come back.

You can ask the staff member how long the next chickens will take to come out. This works at Coles and Woollies too.

Worst comes to worse you vote with your feet. If no Costco chicken then buy from a competitor like Coles, Woolworths, Red Rooster. Think of it like shopping at Aldi, if a grocery item isn't available you substitute from a competitor.

The Costco chicken is $5 but your time is also worth money too. The competitors might be a little more expensive but its nice to have some variety once in a while, especially for roast chickens.
