Hi, so I’m renting a place in NSW that has solar panels. The owners say that I’m still eligible for “solar rebate”. I have no idea what that means, and they haven’t responded to my questions yet. My guess is they bought this a long time ago and still have the government FIT? I was in QLD so I’m not familiar with rules in NSW. I could only find this https://www.energy.nsw.gov.au/households/rebates-grants-and-…
But I don’t really fit any of these scenarios. Any NSW Ozbargainer know of any of rebates for rentals or an idea of what the owners are talking about? Maybe they have their terms mixed up?
[NSW] Solar Rebate for Rentals?

This. Have panels on my rented out property and the tenant has the right to all solar production made during the lease (I charge a small premium on the rent accordingly).
It is on them to choose the best provider to maximise their earnings from the installed system.Rebate = Subsidy given to owners for the initial installation of the system. You get nothing here.
Solar FIT's = All yours, there would be no gov FITs here as plans reset when the owner contacts the electricity company and notifies that they've handed over the property to a tenant. All market forces now.Are there any scenarios where govt FIT transfer? I’ve heard mixed messages, at least in QLD
Not a chance, couldn't even transfer my generous plan to the tenant as the energy provider made sure they provisioned as new customer.
Also Govt FIT's in NSW are all but gone. Last offered in 2010. Don't know anyone on them, but unsure if they are still around for legacy customers.
A system that old in itself would likely half as productive as a modern, efficient system so you'd rather not be on it.
WFH so unlikely to be exporting a lot. Not that much sun here as well so will be looking for the best supply charge and usage rate 👍
The solar rebate applies to the landlord installing the solar panels and not the tenant.
Your landlord is confused.
*Although if it's regarding your solar feed in tariff (provided they've installed panels), they may have installed the solar system in cooperation with an energy company at an elevated feed in tariff, in order for you to continue it you'd have to transfer it into your name when you take on the account.
This happened when my dad sold his house and had a 40c/kwh feed in tariff on his 1.5kw system, basically if the new owner carried over the agreement the energy company would honour it. If they failed to do so the agreement would lapse and restart at the much smaller 2c-10c/kwh rate.
Ok that’s what I thought as well. Thanks for the clarification everyone!
I think they have their terms mixed up. Do you pay the electricity bill or is it included in the rent?
If you pay for it, you need to shop around for the best Feed In Tariff you can find, but note the supply charge and usages charges can be higher, so you need to know the output of the solar system to model the potential saving.
