Costco - thoughts?

Have anyone noticed things are starting to become more expensive at Costco?

For example:
Huggies - used to be around $56-57 a box, now it's $65.
Meccano coffee - used to be $31-32 for the 2 bottles, now it's $40.
Lays chips - well the price fluctuates between $5.70 - $6.20 a pack with no notice.
Tissues - they've creeped up $5-7 in the past 3 months.
Reese's - used to be around $13 a bag at first, now it's $15.70?

I'm sure there are more examples but those are just from memory.

Huggies/Meccano coffee can be purchased for less if you wait for the Colworths/BigW/Toysrus catalogues rendering my membership somewhat useless.

  • I would imagine the strength of AUD/USD have something to do with it.

  • you mean a slightly lower dollar? At best it was $1.07, now 99c? not that big a deal?

    • Aussie dollar at between US$1.04 and US$1.05 at the moment…

    • It won't matter as most of the things I'm talking about are sourced locally.

  • I've noticed a few things fluctuate in price and I've tried to keep all of my receipts.
I did read somewhere that Costco in Melbourne was one of their best performing stores and therefore did not need to discount at the rates of other stores around the world.

    • According to www.smh.com.au, in FY2009-10 Costco Australia reported total revenue of $165.9 million – some $20 million above the average sales of $145 million registered at its average North American store. The results for the 12 months to August 30 were the first full-year of Costco Australia’s operations.

  • the only thing i noticed is the hellacious traffic around Auburn/Reading Cinema!

    • …not anymore

  • Isn't/wasn't there a chain Australian wholesaler/supermarket before Costco? All I remember is you needed an ABN to buy from them. If they're still around how do their prices compare?

    • Campbells maybe?

Been ages since I've been there.

      • That's it, Campbells cash n carry. How do they compare to Costco?

  • Aldi is cheaper I believe and at least I dont need to pay to shop there!! Also waiting for the weekly specials is much easier, unless you have space to stock boxes and boxes of toilet paper, tissues, etc and you got a huge family where every cent counts and you dont want to expect the things you need will go on on sale. Well then go aldi and dont need stock up so much, but aldi prices seem to be rising ?! And they rarely ever have "healthy" fruits

    • The Kirkland brand toilet paper is very good and the bulk bag (not box) fits nicely under a bed.
Thats all we coscto members are allowed to talk about, the toilet paper.
Its certainly all we ever hear about :P

      • Does it break down? I've tried chinese made toilet paper bought at the markets because it's the cheapest I've found. I don't buy it anymore because it clogs the toilet as it doesn't break apart in the water.

    • +1

In order to really maximise your savings with the weekly specials, you do ended up buying a fair bit. By the way, I do buy bulk quantity of toilet paper and tissues in one hit so I don't have to worry about them for couple of months at a time. Another example would be I'll wait for BigW/Toys'r'us to run the nappies special and buy 3 months worth at a time. As long as the holding cost is cheaper than the amount of $ I save (don't give me the NPV/IRR/opportunity cost crap, I'm not at work) then fill up the car here me come.

For some reason I'm not entirely a fan of Aldi…sure I buy certain things from them but they're not quite a replacement for Coleworths yet or Costco for the matter.
