Haven’t had a good experience with spec savers. Have purchased from them a few times and find that the frames are poorly made and find myself having to go back in order to get it fixed or simply by another one.

    • but they don't make frames. they supply the frames made by other manufacturers. maybe you pick the wrong frames? or the lenses you need not great pairing with the frame?

you can even return them within the first 3 months if you don't like them. see here

      • Nah, pretty sure they make the majority of their frames, they just pay for a licence to slap on XYZ brand on the side.

      • +1

The specsaver brand frames are made by them. They are very poorly made abd lose their shape. I avoid them..

  • +12

I had very good experience with Specsavers. Even after a year of buying when my glasses needed some alignment. Went in-store and no problems.

    • You can take any glasses to them, even those bought at another store for free alignment. Clearly has 35% off first pair. That’s what I use to buy glasses.

      • +1

I didn't know that. In general I found they have very good customer service. Atleast at the Specsavers that I went.

  • -7

Once the 2 years warranty lapsed, they don't budge to help other than asking you to buy new frame and lenses

    • +2

What do you need help with after 2 years?

    • +2

I mean isn't that how warranty period works? The 2 year warranty is already twice as long as other optical companies too which only offer 1 year warranty. And chances are after 2 years your prescription would've changed a little

      • -1

No, thats not how warranty periods work under Australian Consumer Law.

        • Warranty under ACL doesn't by default mean extended warranty on top of the existing warranty period. It depends on the nature of the product and the price point. So, a defect arising after the warranty period after the initial offering of 2 pairs of glasses with 2 year warranty for $200 will certainly not get consumer courts running after Specsavers

    • What do you expect them to cover after 2 years? Actually, what could even go wrong aside from them bending out of shape (which would likely be from missuse/wear and tear). A screw loose in the arm? Tighten it!

  • +2

Can we take up the offer and claim with our health insurance too ?

    • Yeap. That's what I am planning to do.

      • Cool

  • I just placed order for new single pair specs last Sunday from the $349 range.

Would any one know if there is a way I can request this deal? I used my health fund plus out of pocket. The wait time for me to get the glasses is 3 weeks.

I see reviews that's Specsavers doesn't allow to cancel a order.

    • You can return them still as change of mind.

      • Thanks will call them tomorrow

      • +2

Thanks contacted the store and was given a credit to select one additional specs from $349 range.

        • Damn…. logical from SpecSavers. Amazing.

  • Get any 2 pairs for $199, storewide!

    Any?

I have NEVER gone to Specsavers and been charged the special prices they have advertised.

The bill is always more. They always have some excuse to charge more. I don't believe them any longer.

    • +2

True, sometimes you have to pay double what they advertised to get proper glasses.

    • +2

they always trying to upsell, but thats what the sales team does. just say no you don't need it or suck it up and pay for what you need.

I have never paid for anything extra. All the extras that I get are what ever they are promoting at the time, this is typically towards the end of the year when panic sets in and remembered that I haven't used my private health insurance offer.

    • +12

I work in this industry and it infuriates me that people just expect to get everything for free these days. The pricing is pretty clear. You can get any 2 pairs of single vision glasses for $199 with this sale but if you need anything extra added on like thinned lenses, transitions, polarised lenses etc, of course you have to pay extra for that. It's all in their price guide that you can take home and nothing is hidden.

It's like buying an iPhone and then paying extra for more storage, bigger screen etc. Of course you can get away with the base model and if you want extras for better quality of life then that's your choice.

      • -3

If the iPhone was advertised as “any iPhone for $xx” but you ended up paying 3 times that, it’d make for the same as what happens ever day at optometrists.

        • +4

It clearly says "Other lens types and options available at an extra cost." These costs aren't hidden from the general public if you look online. I don't know about you but I would rather spend a few extra dollars to improve my vision and quality of life. And for those that don't then there's an option for you too. No one is forcing you to spend "3 times more"

          • +8

@Aceman98: They probably need the glasses first to read the deal properly lol

            • +1

@buckster: How would you advertise the deal then? At the end of the day this is the best deal that Specsavers will have for the year. Feel free to shop around and try and get similar value elsewhere

              • @Aceman98: Whoa! Friendly fire!

                …Shoulda gone to Specsavers??

              • @Aceman98: This is the same deal they had running in Dec and Jan.

      • -1

Making references to iPhone is somewhat poor defence - an overpriced product propped through ingenious marketing.

It is odd that advertisement suggests you can get 2 pairs of glasses for free but in fact you pay hundreds of dollars. yes, off course, everything is there, in the small print, and in their price list on the computer, and yes, no one is forcing you to accept when you seat in front of a trained sales person cleverly pushing the product on you…

only bought once from subj, the glasses were not wearable. off course, personal experience is never representative.

      • It's all in their price guide that you can take home and nothing is hidden.

Yep, as a customer, the price guide is extremely clear. Clearer than my vision without glasses.

    • -2

Not sure why you’re getting neg’d, it’s true.
The glasses industry is the biggest con job around today.

I got a pair of glasses from Specsavers’ $75 range. For $250 once all the additional costs were added.
Tell me of another product you buy that is 3 times the base price by the time you actually buy it??

Or of another industry where exactly the same product is available for 1/10th of the price if ordered from overseas??

Or where 2 pairs of “$399” products can suddenly be purchased “for $199” allegedly making for a 75% discount??

      • +1

        Ryanair!

      • I went in last time they had this deal and got an eye prescription and ended up with two pairs with standard lenses for $78. Where's the con?

  • They have some of the worst lenses and the worst customer service

    • Who has good lenses and isn't owned by a giant monopoly?

      Because I need new lenses…

      • -1

        Dresden

        • bruh probably worse than any big chains, they dont even mention what lens they are offering on their website

          • @OzOzOzOzzzzz: Does Specsavers state their lenses? Dresden does provide the PD and happy with the quality. Only downside is far from me as they closed their cbd store.

      • Independent optometrists are the way to go if you ask me. So many more options. Yes you probably do pay a bit more but the time and service you get is unparalleled compared to specsavers and other corporates in my opinion.

        • Agred, happy to support my local independent. Yes, I know the markup on frames, but I don't like to support monopoly/duopoly businesses like Specsavers, OPSM etc.

        • Independents are very expensive. $493 for my last order of single vision glasses with a $120 frame. Never again.

If anything, small business is even more greedy than large corporations.

      • +2

A bit of a monopoly still, but I go with Zenni.
Costs about $50 including frame and lenses with anti reflective and oleophobic coating, with sunglasses clip-ons for the frame codting about $7 extra.

  • Thanks, been waiting for this deal since my prescription sunglasses were stolen.

    • +2

You are welcome. That's a strange thing for someone to steal.

      • OMG this happened to us also the other night! Got into our car, stole my wife's $20 pair, and my prescription pair (but left the $150 wireless car charger haiyaaa

  • What about the $399 range? Aren't they "any"?

T&Cs don't exclude the $399 range but the title suggests only upto the $349 range!

    • This is what I need to know. I only want the ultralight rimless in the $399 range.

    • They are listed even you click the link.

    • They appear on the website but because I can not add to cart due to unavailable online to check if they are included in the any. So for now they are not included.
Edit: from previous deal comment appears $399 range it's included.

  • +4

I only get glasses from Specsavers. Rip off everywhere else.

Always costs more than what they list here as I get thinner lenses, coating and polarising on my sunglasses. But very happy to pay.

Usually I'd wait for the free polarising deal instead of this one…

    • or wait for the thinner lense offer

      • Or wait for the coating offer

  • I just got my glasses last saturday after a 2 week wait… paid 355 for 2.. however the pescription they gave me was incorrect so i have to go back in tomorrow for a retest…. i'm hoping they will refund me the difference on this offer? Online i would pay 270 with the anti glare coating for the same 2 pairs i bought for 355. Does their no fuss policy count towards just straight up refunding if they won't honour the deal? It seems a bit of a grey area on the site, "making things right" is different to just refunding no questions asked…

    • be nice and just tell them you are not 100% satisfied.

      • +1

So just got back from my new eye test… they got the pescription completely wrong the first time so said they will exchange them. I asked if its possible for them to honour this deal and refund me the 100 extra i paid since they have to send them away to remake them and i could just ask for a refund anyway…

long story short they said that they had to ring the director who is in hospital with their dad and that if i can live with forcing them to pay 100 out of their own pocket plus the 250 it costs them for the frames etc then i should have that on my conscience.

I said just refund me and ill buy them online, and one of the girls said ye then he is online stores problem, but the manager said it will still come to them because they are the optometrist… they said they hate when sales online does this because it causes people like me to take advantage….

Absolutly shocking service lol i would understand if they had given me glasses that were correct originally… but they didn't…so now i should surely be entitled to a refund

    • +2

I went to Rhodes store ordered 2 pairs prescription. I got headaches from them so went to North Sydney store and they arranged test to be redone. Rhodes did test properly but I was able to get weaker prescriptions that was more suited to work on the computer. Did not cost me for the change of lens. Let me keep the strong lens too in case I ever wanted to swap the lens down the track.

Just the experience above would make me go back if I ever needed glasses again.

  • New to glasses. Would this include transitions?

    • Unfortunately you'd have to pay extra for transitions. But it is 20% off atm as well!

      • they have ran promotions in the past where they offered free transitions lenses which I have taken advantage of.

        • Are they any good? I am so sick of carrying the extra set of glasses with me everywhere I go :(

          • @Pub Envelope: It was ok. After a while the glasses ended up with a permanent tint I don't like it very much. I prefer proper sunnies. Talk to them and ask them upfront if you don't like the transitions what your options are to swapping to standard frame+sunny pair.

          • @Pub Envelope: They now called it a different name: reactions. I have always get this, but I notice that since about 5-7 years ago, the quality is degraded and they blamed because I made my glasses thinner. I am now wearing the thick one and will see how it goes in 2 years time. I have to replace my reactions glasses almost every 2 years and when I tried to claim the warranty after being replaced, they said the original warranty term has been lapsed. And the last one that I had also got problem with scuff mark and they refuse to replace as it has just expired less than a month. I should bring to them when I saw it earlier.

            • @yht: They call it reactions because they use a different (and agreeably inferior) type of lens now to save a bit of money on their end, as they'd otherwise have to pay more wholesale costs.

          • @Pub Envelope: If you want to drive with them, get clip on/ flip up polarising lenses (probably something you can get online or in many other stores). Highly recommended if you are going to drive through a tunnel.

          • @Pub Envelope:

Are they any good? I am so sick of carrying the extra set of glasses with me everywhere I go :(

For driving? Transition lenses don't work in cars (windscreen blocks UV needed to change glasses) so that cuts out a big benefit of their use case (looks like some brands do have this now - but not Specsavers )

Also the reset to clear can take time, and sometimes you're stuck half way which gives off pervey vibes!!

            • +1

@danyool: Nah driving is fine because I can keep sunnies in the car. It's more for when I'm out and about, going from inside to outside. I feel like a tool wearing my sunnies inside just so I can see lol

  • Just ordered two pairs 4 days back and went there to try my luck
They told ones orders are through they can’t do anything
    :(

    • +1

      100% satisfaction guarantee
We want you to be completely happy with your purchase at Specsavers. If you have any concerns within three months of the date of your purchase we will put it right. No worries, no fuss.

Say you're concerned that you can't get a refund for the difference, so you'd like to return them for a full refund instead… then order the exact same glasses.

      • Problem is I have not got the glasses yet.
But maybe I can try anyways :)
        Thanks

        • They gave me the wrong pescription so i had a retest today… ive asked them to honour this deal and they basically told me that im asking them to give me 100 dollars out of the directors pocket because its their money im wasting, plus the cost of the frames which they claim they can no longer use (unworn) and that the director is in hospital with their dad so i should feel bad for trying to take their money…. lol. Hope they are a bit more professional with you

          • @Cantthink899: Haha, I have skipped to try anyways.
I got reimbursed by insurance already so it should be fine.

  • Go to Specsavers annually to get glasses covered by health insurance. Never seen anything appealing beyond the 200-250 range. Does anyone really have amazing options that are covered under this deal?

  • This is normal pricing at Oscar Wylee, Bailey Nelson and a few others. Any reason why people prefer Specsavers?

    • +1

Their frames don't have spring hinges, designer brands, 2 year warranty (double the industry standard)

      • Not the only ones that offer two years, but with the way the Specsavers frames are you definitely need the two year warranty…because they don't often last

        • I can tell you from years in this industry, most of the time it comes down to how the person takes care of their glasses

    • +1

We pay for one get two whilst with opsm or laubman, we pay one get one.

  • Worst glasses shop I’ve ever been to. Rubbish product and the eye tests are a joke, 3 times and still wrong. Went to OPSM and first time right with proper brand frames at basically same price.

Buyer beware, nothing but a scam.

    • +1

Depends on the store. Specsavers does far more thorough testing for me than the OPSM 200 meters away, and will always bulk bill the tests.

Then I ask for the test results and buy the glasses from Zenni for 20% of the price.

      • +1

Same here. Actually have some snellen charts and a trial lens kit at home and I found specsavers prescription to line up almost identically to what I got (I used it as a confirmation.)

        Then, off to Zenni…

      • -1

Brother in law ordered online once, only way he could see through the glasses is if they sat on the tip of his nose like a grandma. 😂 Probably why measuring the actual frame to the face for the sweet spot is important.

        • Sounds like they stuffed up the PD measurement.

You can measure your PD online on the specsaver site using your phone camera, or using one of the various apps around, or using a ruler, or taking a photo and using an object for scale.

Frame measurements arent required for lens performance, just for how they fit on your face, and most frames have the measurements on the inside of the arm and zenni allows filtering frames based on these measurements. They also provide free exchange if you have issues with fitting etc

          • +1

@NobalaKoba: not really an optician but do know a few thing about glasses, first the measurement inside the arm isnt really any indicator for fitting, it just for cutting lens, second pd (you eyes sepearation distance) is different for OC (optical center-where the lens should be put), which depends on a lot of measurements and will affect lens performance , thats why most professional optician wont recommended getting glass online

  • Can we buy two frames with two different prescriptions while using this offer?

    • Unfortunately no. They state on the terms and conditions.

      Both pairs for same person.

  • +1

Went in yesterday, the deal does not work if you are with Medibank and want to use the no gap feature. Medibank usually allows up to $249 no gap regardless of extras limit. Unfortunately this deal is not covered under it, and you’d have to pay any difference from your extras limit.
My limit is $150, so if I got the deal of 2 for $199 I’d pay $49. Or if I got two glasses from the $249 range, I’d pay nothing.
Definitely better going in store as they can give you more discount with your health fund.

  • I always hety glasses from Specsavers and won't hesitate to recommend them anytime!

  • +1

Get comfortable understanding your prescription and just order from Zenni. Miles cheaper

  • Picking up my new glasses today and guess what I paid :(

  • +2

Dumb question - I always buy in-store, but if I was to buy online:

How do i get my prescription uploaded?

How do I apply discount with my health insurance?

  • +1

3-4 weeks wait (for delivery) currently in Perth with SpecSavers, so factor that in your calculations.

  • +2

Just going to mention here for anyone who like me is new to glasses: this morning my first two pairs of glasses arrived in the post, and they seem fine (well fantastic really but as I say that's because I'm marvelling that suddenly I can read fine print again). Cost was $28 delivered total for two different frames, using two different prescriptions (one for close reading, one tweaked with a little less 'add' for computer screen work). Bought them at Vision Direct, took 10 days to arrive by post. I got anti-glare coating but no other up-sell addons.

  • My family had a very bad experience with spec saver.
Last November we bought 2 pairs each for 3 people.
The quality of their lens has degraded unlike the previous years.

As an example, their coated lens for computer use cant be used at low light as it has a lot of reflections, and ive compared that to the same coated lens i got from them the prevous year.

I now use the old glasses at bedtime as its way much better and no reflection.

Same feedback from another colleague, he said never again he's going back to SS.

In case you already ordered, and you have that extra "coating for computer use", try that at night time with your phone and compare it with your old glasses.

    • you should be able to get them to fix your glasses.

  • -1

Has anyone had experiences buying glasses while overseas?

Several years ago, I was overseas in China, with someone who spoke Chinese, and we got great glasses/lens deals, and they made them in store while you wait.

A few friends of mine (from different countries in Asia) always buy their glasses over there for fractions of the costs in Australia.

I guess the optical companies are "charging what the market can bear" here.

    • Capitalism. If you're on an average wage and you don't feel poor with life, then that simply means they can charge higher.

    • Sounds like my dentist, he wants $2600 for a new crown for my tooth. Way cheaper to have it done in asia with return flights & hotel accommodation.
