Can't Get Sound from PC to TV (via DP to HDMI Cable)

Can someone please help me get my PC audio working on the TV/monitor?

PC is an old Dell Precision T3500 desktop running Windows 10 Pro.
I have 2x TV's connected as monitors, which are both Samsung 32inch UA32D6000SMXXY.
PC has 2 DisplayPort sockets and I have a DP to HDMI cable connected to each TV/monitor. Video works fine but it doesn't transfer audio (have to use headphones).
From reading/researching online, it seems like the PC hardware might not be capable (due to age) of transferring video AND audio via the DP output.

Would really appreciate any assistance from someone more knowledgeable than me!

I'm wondering if there's something similar to this, but with a DP cable instead of VGA. I can't find anything though.

PC specs (from system information):
System model: Dell Precision T3500 (x64)
Processor - Intel(R) Xeon(R) W3530 @ 2.80 GHz, 2794Mhz, 4 cores
Under Control Panel -> Hardware & Sound -> Sound — the only audio device options are my USB headphones, USB webcam and front/rear 3.5mm audio jacks.
Note that 'show disabled/disconnected devices' is on.

What GPU to do you have in there? If it's a nVidia based one have you tried this? - https://www.nvidia.com/content/Control-Panel-Help/vLatest/en…

Also double check your drivers, either a newer/older one might work. You probably should be seeing a nvidia high definition audio driver there. Also make sure the TV is set to get audio via HDMI.

edit: I'm also not sure how it's going to go with dual video and pumping out audio, it'll only go to one TV at a time I think. Tried running on just a single TV?

    • Thanks for the reply.
      It's a nvidia quadro fx 1800.
I couldn't get NVIDIA Control Panel to run even though I had the latest drivers installed. After some mucking around, I did a clean install of drivers and got it to run. NVIDIA Control Panel shows the 2 TVs/monitors but then when I open windows sound settings, it still doesn't show up either of them to select. I tried turning audio off for one output, but that still didn't work either.

  • Jesus it's a 14 year old processor/system. Don't waste any time on it.

Don't write things off based on age or you'll lose all wisdom…
I got it for free to replace an ageing laptop and other than this minor issue, the system runs perfectly for what I need.
Why create more e-waste when it's a perfectly capable system 😊

Just get cheap speakers? Would be the simplest solution. I have a cheap DP-HDMI dongle, and it also transmits sound from my Haswell system, which is only slightly newer than yours. So they exist, but how many would you need to buy, and how much money would you need to spend to find one that works, assuming it isn't your PC being unable to support it, as you said?

    • Cheap speakers are certainly an option but if I can, I'd rather get it working this way instead of buying unnecessary stuff.

    • I'll keep this option open as a last resort 😉

DisplayPort doesn't always output audio (it's optional on DP v1.1a), so if the Dell isn't explicitly setup for it - the output isn't an available option in Windows audio settings as you noticed - then you can't get sound.

    • Thanks for the info! Is there a way to check this?

      • I think the only way to double-check is to consult Dell's technical specs for that PC. But you've already done the actual testing in-person, so I wouldn't bother.

You'll just have to run a separate audio line, or otherwise an old GPU with HDMI might work instead but that requires finding additional hardware.

  • Um, cheap speakers and you are done: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/757349

There’s a PC audio in on the back of that Samsung screen. Plug a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable into the audio out on the PC and into the back of the screen.

    • Thanks. I tried this and it doesn't seem to work. TV/monitor doesn't recognise it as an audio input source. I had a quick play with the settings to see if I could get it to work but I'm out of time for now (Dad duties call) and will have another go later. I suspect I won't have any luck with this though based on what I found…

      • I don't have Samsung TV's but on the back of my LG there's a specific HDMI port labelled PC that uses the 3.5mm audio input. You might need to change where the HDMI cable is plugged in.
