      • stained in butter and with a biowax lining that does not make it recyclable, not compostable either.

      • +1

Only if the paper box is covered in PFAS and other forever chemicals.

      • Hope its not waxed

  • +1

    This has been banned.

    • +25

That's why people need to order them online, because one cannot buy them instores.

BTW seller says them as reusable

      • +1

i have an oil reserve just offshore from seal rocks. i could sell it to you. make straws till your great great great grand kids finish uni.

        • +3

The bitumen used on road, comes from oil

Agriculture depends on irrigation pipes, which come from oil

      • +16

Why do you need 100 of them if they are reusable?

        • +22

to share it with your 99 friends, obviously.

          • -1

@Pest85: i refuse to accept any healthy adult that needs a plastic straw has 100 friends at all, let alone 100 like minded friends.

        • Giving you a +1 so your negative vote for this post doesn't get revoked like mine.

        • +1

In case you throw them away when you don't reuse it…

        • +1

Why do you need 100 of them if they are reusable?

Because with one word you can easily bypass stupid laws that required millions of taxpayer dollars to create…

    • +17

Yet some fruit & veg is still sold in pre-packaged plastic bags, go figure.

      • +30

Yet step by step it's going to be banned too, because just like you can't get all your shit together in one day, the state and people can't fix everything at once.

        • -3

          Banning plastics in retail settings
or banning plastics across a broad range of industry?

Plastics is used inside cars, eg. dashboards, steering wheels, seats,
          wiring, etc.

It's used in irrigation in agriculture, etc.

It's going to be a crazy way to think of plastic-free world,
and the "movement" starts with plastic bags or straws?

The bags & straws argument is valid, in that it ends up in the oceans, etc.
but banning plastic outright is going to be interesting in itself.

          • +13

@whyisave: No one is trying to ban plastics - the pro-plastic companies use that argument all the time - we are banning SINGLE USE plastics and particular plastics that cannot be recycled. Have a read of APCO's website and you will see what is actually happening/Or not happening.

            • -1

@the-fuzz: I was replying to the comment before mine, ie. "step by step it's going to be banned too",
and that if it's a 'step by step' process, then what will be the objective due to the current pervasive nature of plastic ?

Banning plastics that cannot be recycled is a good thing,
and it will force innovation for circular economy.
              I agree with this already.

I also get annoyed by wind farms or solar panels,
which after their use, are simply buried in the ground,
because they are not recycled (eg. no legislation, too tricky, etc.)

So, much like "single use plastics", there are plenty of things on this planet which are 'single use',
but it's not brought to our attention.

              Thanks for pointing out APCO.
              I just visited & read : https://apco.org.au/

        • the state and people can't fix everything at once.

What exactly do you think is being fixed here? Other than to stroke the ego of stupid hippies who have no idea how the world works?

        • They could bring a new law into tomorrow.
The difference is the supermarkets pay millions in donations to the big political parties so get their way.

The straw ban actually hurts smaller operators disproprtionally more than the big fast food outlets. big fast food can absorb the costs easily.

Just another way to transfer more wealth away from small owner operators and to the corporations.

          • -1

            @zombrex:

The straw ban actually hurts smaller operators disproprtionally

Funny thing is, when I go to a regular cafe they have no straws, but got to any store with an 'ethnic' background and they still have them because they aren't buying into the BS

Just another way to transfer more wealth away from small owner operators and to the corporations.

Yep, which is what the gov is mostly used for on all sides. Big business or special interest lobby gov in the name of <insert_social_justice_cause_here> to make the landscape more favourable to themselves. This is why the best form of government is one that has the least amount of influence in your life.

      • +3

Stop buying products in pre packaged plastic bags and retailers will stop selling them.

      • +2

Shelf life of a cucumber is extended by a week due to their plastic wrap. Gonna have to get used to limp or short-date cukes soon.

        • When will all of these entitled housewives learn that limp cucumbers are just a natural part of getting older…

        • Talking real life problems I see.

      • You know that though, those are actually one of the better usage of plastic bags.

All other alternatives have other issues, like either it's a carbon emission issue, can't actually hold wet food or can't wistand the delivery. Nuts comes to mind, so does cherries.

So thin plastic wrapping is still one of the better materials for pre-packaged stuff.

There's probably something to said about the packet of granny smiths for 4 bucks though.

      • Rhod Gilbert's rant on having to buy two pre-packaged potatoes is a classic

    • +3

Paper straws actually create three times more co2. Theres a nice infographic about it here https://www.strawlific.com/post/paper-vs-plastic-the-brief-s…

These are banned in at least Vic and NSW. I wonder if Amazon will ship to those states…

    • +1

      I'm guessing they can't

      https://www.vic.gov.au/single-use-plastics

From 1 February 2023, Victorians cannot purchase, or be supplied with single-use plastic drinking straws, plates, cutlery, drink stirrers, cotton bud sticks or expanded polystyrene food service items and drink containers from any business or organisation.

Although there is always ways around it.

People who need single-use plastic drinking straws due to disability or medical needs can still purchase and use these items.

      • +8

It still doesn't say people cannot bring straws from other regions, or cannot use them

        • +2

But it means Amazon warehouses in Vic can't legally supply them. I'm guessing the law is similar in other states.

I don't believe Amazon has warehouses in Tassie or NT

          https://www.aboutamazon.com.au/workplace/facilities

Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Adelaide

        • +1

          Yes it does

Victorians cannot purchase, or be supplied with single-use plastic drinking straws

          • +1

@spaceflight: These are reusable plastic straws, not single use. It clearly states it on the product & in it's product description.

      • cafe still uses single serve coffee cups ….

        • Bots still try ro stir up trouble. 🤷‍♂️

          • @M00Cow:

Bots still try ro stir up trouble

NPC trying to sound like they have an argument…🤷‍♂️

  • weird - banned from sale in NSW and VIC at least

    • All states but Tassie & NT

      https://www.marineconservation.org.au/which-australian-state…

I'd be interested which warehouse they ship from. In Vic at least they're not allowed to sell them unless you're exempt for medical/disability reasons.

      • +2

Is it even possible to ban anything in NT?

        • Can ban lots of things in NT.

It makes no difference whatsoever though.

  • +38

    I miss em ordered the 1500 .
I can smell negs coming though .
    Naughty boy DC .

    • +33

      ;)

try having some smoothie or juice, or even Iced coffees (like from OTR) with those paper straws, they get so crumbled and mushed that one cannot even finish 1 glass fully without needing to get another straw

      • +6

Paper straws are crap. But then again most people don't need straws anyway. I don't mind bamboo.

      • +4

So you'll just carry around a bunch of plastic straws?
        Just trying to understand

The best straw..is no straw. Chug that beverage down lol

        • +2

I generally agree, but a slurpee & thickshake both require a straw.

Plenty of non paper or plastic options available

          • @M00Cow: Yeah fair enough. Guess I'm out of touch. The only outside beverage I ever have is a coffee. Never cold.

          • @M00Cow: Bubble tea?

        • +1

not everybody due to injury or age can tilt a can to an angle for the beverage to flow, and use straws, not just in hospital situations or old folks homes. I have a neck injury and can't tilt a can so that just "chug a beverage down" … need a straw …. and don't always have a stainless one handy …….
coffee cups and plastic drink bottles are possible a bigger creator of single use plastics but "might cost jobs" so not as easy a target as coffee and bottled water have industry bodies that loby government ….. not sure "single use drinking straw association" does much lobbying ….

        • +2

So you'll just carry around a bunch of plastic straws? Just trying to understand

I keep a few in the car and bring to brekky when I go out. Afterwards I take them down to the beach and find a dolphin to thrown them at.

      • Totes agree - my DIY straws made from kitchen paper are just shit. Which means the only other option available to me is a plastic straw.

      • +4

Unless you have a disability, what's wrong with just drinking straight from the glass lol?

If you have a disability which means you're unable to drink from a glass, I think that's a justifiable use of plastic for sure.

        • +2

you buy an ice coffee like this https://i.imgur.com/nMqlYTw.png from store.

So you to drink coffee, and ice cream later.

If you use no staw then you get ice cream spilled over, or make a mess otherwise.
(sure you can buy a spoon to eat ice cream first them drink coffee) but what if there's big frozen ice in drink ? do you want a cold burn in mouth ? or just drink you beverage ?

          • @USER DC: Yeah, I guess so, I never really eat that sort of thing. Seems like a relatively rare situation anyway. If I were making this at home myself I'd probably put a much smaller amount of icecream on top or a wider cup, which is the situation you'd need a straw. And honestly at home, a metal straw would be preferable anyway right, particuarly from a bargain point of view? You can ensure it's cleaned properly etc.

Tbh I'd probably want my icecream separately, it's weird to me dumping so much on top like that. More used to a thickshake type of thing where it's actually blended in.

Anyway, at a cafe I'd be fine with a paper straw just to get it to go down a bit, and then I think I'd have no problems drinking it normally by the time the straw is soggy.

Don't feel you need 1500 plastic straws for this very specific type of food/drink though, at least for personal use.

          • +1

@USER DC: Not hard to bring your own straw and better yet bring your own cup. I do both in a regular basis. Took a little way to make it a habit but I never forget now. When I first started I would occasionally forget but then I decided if I forget I just forgo that coffee and have one at home or work, depending on the day.

            • +2

@bobwokeup: With your own straw you can also make sure it's a decent one and make sure you actually enjoy those excess kilojoules and expense.

              • +1

@tonka: True that although I don’t get the kilojoules I just get an iced latte without the sugar syrup.

        • what's wrong with just drinking straight from the glass lol

Maccas etc dont give you drinks in glass.

        • literally half the deals posted on ozbargain have plastic.. why didn't you neg them ?

          • +3

@Savas: I'm negging for a mixture of the following
-Value (cheaper for plastic straws elsewhere as commented above, as far as I'm aware "shopeeflagship store straws" are not any sort of "name brand" plastic straw which may be better quality than others)

-Value (according to camels, this is the regular price)

-Value (if buying units of 1k+ units for personal use, reusable straws are much more economical, plus environmentally friendly)

-Value (can drink liquids straight from a glass in most cases, costing $0)

-Benefit of product VS environmental cost (however disagree with this point for those who have a disability, then it's a very justified use of disposable plastic, just like other medical devices)

          • +3

@Savas: i think it's due to being small and single-use/light.. often ending up in the environment where it's difficult to extract.

          • +1

            @Savas:

literally half the deals posted on ozbargain have plastic.. why didn't you neg them ?

            Single-use plastic?

          • +1

@Savas: Because if the bunch of whinging crybabies didn't have double standards, they wouldn't have any at all.

      • +4

I personally use my stainless steel straw. Wash it and ready when ever I need it. I understand it's not convenient but it's a small sacrifice to make for the good of the environment.

        • Unfortunately you're making no difference.

Your clothes, shoes, food, flooring, glazing, hair shampoo, soap, phone -everything you have uses oil and will for the foreseeable future.

Washing and drying a plastic straw probably has the same impact as using a stainless one.

      • How upsetting

      • +1

Why do you need a straw?

    • Presumably you're physically handicapped?

      • +1

Some people get all the straws.

        And luck…

      • thks bought the 500, not bad for under $15 delivered ….

    • +2

Including grandma/grandpa who couldn't lift the milk glass to drink and need straw?

  • +9

    Cheaper on ebay.

    • +3

      even cheaper on ebay
hysteria at 'Amazon Prime free shipping', yet ebay cheaper.
      no deal here.

Turtles need plastic straws - they can't hold a cup.

Negging for bad value, cheaper on eBay/AliExpress.

    • +2

      Got a link?

Sounds like you've done your research and know they are cheaper on eBay/AliExpress.

    • Go to Alibaba for the cheapest prices .

      • getting these from china or other international places could have worse consequences, (like if customs dont like it they can make recipient require permits for getting international parcels) or something like that

Or at least get on the watch list.
like how Chad is right now (from the ColdOnes)

        • You realise these ones on Amazon are probably coming from China too, right? "Sold by shopeeflagship"

          • +3

@MiscOzB: but you wont be responsible for the international shipping bit, (you aint importing from china, you are buying from within australia)
nor you have to wait 2 months for parcel from china, instead you get in 2 days at max with amazon
