Optus eSIM 7-Day Flex Plan - Free Trial for 7 Days (New Customers, New Numbers Only) @ Optus (App Required)

220

Yes I know they have leaked our data!

A good burner sim for free from Optus - get 7-day free trial and cancel the plan before the end of the trial period.

Not sure how long the sim will be able to receive calls and texts after the expiry, I assume it is for 6 months. Can someone who has used flex plans confirm this.

Edit: contacted the chat support and they said the sim will be able to receive calls and text until 60 days of expiry, but I’m not sure whether they understood what I am asking.

Warning: you can’t remove your card details from the app/website. You have to call them for that!

eSIM 7-day trial:

Pay $0 for the first 7-day subscription on the Optus Flex plan. Only available to new customers with an eSIM capable device who are activating on an eSIM. Limit one free trial per customer. Excludes rate plan changes, SIM swaps and ports of existing mobile numbers. Available for activation with a new mobile number via My Optus app self-service activation only on the 7-day subscription, without international calls. Credit/debit card details required for activation, plus valid ID if prompted. Fair Go Policy applies. Subscription will renew after 7 days unless cancelled, and subsequent subscriptions will be charged at standard in-market price.

They're not the only ones just incase you didn't realise….

      • So that excuses it? No idea how we don’t have stricter laws on protecting data… most other countries even 3rd world have better data protection acts

  • does this come with a phone number?

    • yes it does!

New number only - so can't use to port out/in.

    • Porting process for esim is broken as it requires live chat and does not get a response so you will need to bring to a branch.

      • Aha. Optus at its best.

        • Yeah its unbelievable how they still cant get this right. Amaysim and Felix esim porting process have been really smooth and almost instantaneous.

  • Nice. Will get it tomorrow. Wish it's 30 days

    • Gomo has 30 days I believe and they use optus network

      • As per latest comments esim feature is broken. I wouldn't risk my number

so what is this? it says $8 initial costs. What happens when cancel, or the $8 gets charged.

    • You don't get charged until the 7th day, and you can cancel straight away.

  • Not even worth it even if they started paying me to buy their sim, Unless they gonna start paying all Australian full compensation to damage they caused

  • Normally, Optus accounts expire 186 days after credit expires. I can't say whether they do something special here. Some if not all of their various balance checking methods advise the date once credit has expired, e.g. text BAL to 9999. You should be able to receive calls and texts until the account expiry date. Optus have been offering this for quite a while. If you need a physical SIM FreeSIMCards.com.au continues to offer them for the price of your details. I don't know whether you can subscribe for a single day for $1 as a new physical SIM customer on Flex 4G or you need to opt for a 7 day subscription to kick things off. A 1 day subscription for $2 for Flex 5G used to be advertised as an option on the Optus website until recently so that might still be an option. You can change plans at any time as much as you like with Optus but if you change from a (discontinued) grandfathered plan you won't be able to change back.

    • Do they have a PAYG plan with 365 day expiry you can change to then?

      • They used to offer the Long Expiry plan but I don't know if it is still available as they no longer advertise it. Expiry on that depends on the value of the recharge and any credit on that can't be used for a Flex subscription. Flex is good if your usage is intermittent. Given how high the rates are on Long Expiry it takes very little usage to hit $1 e,g, A 4 minute call or 4 texts or 14 MB of data is enough to hit that. With Flex you can keep it going with a $1 subscription every 6 months, Long Expiry would cost you a minimum of $30 every six months if you don't want to lose your accumulated credit (or $10 every 231 days if you are) but they offer a $60 recharge with I year credit expiry. You can use discounted starter kits to recharge it though. If you want 365 day credit expiry on the Optus network amaysim is best for that at $10/year. Rates are cheaper than Optus direct.

        • anyone know if Flex is a good option as an international roaming sim to receive SMS OTP ?

          • @CereaL: Not that I've tried it, but It should be fine for receiving SMS. I wouldn't recommend it for other OS use as you'd need to buy a roaming pack and you're limited to Optus Zone 1 destinations. However, if you have a VPN tunnel set up back to Australia you might be able to use WiFi calling if Optus don't wise up. You probably need an external router or rooted phone to achieve this at least with Android phones. It certainly is the cheapest option.

            • @Stingo: I literally just need it for SMS OTP … and with Amaysim changing their rules … I don't know what to do now.

Telstra Prepaid use to be awesome but even that seems to have changed .. so like yeh :/

The only other option I found is "Cloud SMS" that seemed like it could do the job .. it's just a pain in the butt to transfer everything over to a new number …

              • @CereaL: Flex is fine. amaysim will probably still be able to receive SMS without the purchase of roaming packs. I wouldn't deal with any provider that doesn't support mobile number portability. Aldi mobile and Lebara (owned by Vodafone) both offer long expiry but Lebara don't advertise their long expiry "Standard Plan".

    • Very helpful information

  • Yea normally the number last for 6 months before the number is lost. You can top up $5 to fund the account and leave it for another 6 months

    • If that's so, I can't find it in the Long Expiry CIS unless you are talking about an add-on e.g. MyData or MyTalk. Add-ons expire in 14 and 28 days respectively and given they're not recharges they may not affect the account expiry in the same way as a recharge.

  • I mean if you get a normal flex prepaid. It will expire in a month but you can keep the number for 6 months. You won't be able to use it unless you recharge

    • With Flex a $1 subscription will keep it going for another six months.

      • Could you elaborate on this?

        • A $1 subscription lasts for 1 day and gives you outgoing service and data. Any subscription extends account expiry to 186 days after the subscription ends. While your account remain active (unexpired) you can receive texts in any place Optus has prepaid roaming and you can receive calls in Australia.

          • @Stingo: To clarify, I can just indefinitely keep my number active by activating the $1 subscription once every 186 days? So in total, $2 a year to keep a number for receiving SMS/CALLS only.

            • @cngu0803: Yes. You'll only be able to receive calls in Australia though (unless you can fool Optus into thinking you're in Australia when you're not.)

  • Optus esim system is still broken. Unable to get a new number or port in existing number.

    • It worked for me

    • same here
      had to cancel my order

  • From the Optus Flex 4G CIS:

From 31/03/23, $1 and $14 options are no longer available for new activations. Existing customers on these options can continue to recharge until they cancel.

So this is no longer a good option for SIM parking. I expect there are better options for intermittent use now but other than SIM slutting nothing comes immediately to mind.

Flex 5G has been similarly changed with only the $60/30 days option still available to new customers.

    • Thanks for the update mate. I can still see the $1 plan on the app, does that mean i can still activate it? My original plan was flex free trial

      • Your guess is as good as mine.

  • How to purchase ??
