Hi all,
Looking to get back into fishing and need a recommendation for a rod and reel combo below $150. Just fishing in Sydney rivers, not from a boat. Seems to be too many options to get my head around.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Good reco this, I picked it up after many years off fishing and its been great. I went the 2-5kg and its perfect for where I fish around Sydney as well.
That was going to be my next question. 2-5kg, thanks
No worries, happy fishing! If you're in Sydney and looking for advice, I found the blokes at Ottos in Drummoyne pretty helpful as far as knowledge of areas and what type of setup to run.
@Ywhna: Cheers mate
@[Deactivated]: The sienna reel is the best value ‘cheap’ reel around and the rod is fine. Or the anaconda version

2-5 kg range works great for your typical Sydney river fishing. But if you are chasing Jewfish or the odd Kingie you’d want around 10kg range.

Two rods/ reels and a few packs of plastics
Thanks
just go to kmart and get one, an expensive rod and reel doesn't help you catch bigger fish.
Too true. Bought my telescopic general purpose rod n reel for 25 bucks from Kmart and its still going strong after more than 10 years and countless fishes. TBH Sydney Harbour is so heavily fished that it is hard to get legal sized fishes. Its putting in the countless hours trying out locations and tactics not the equipment.
This comment is screaming at my brain. Can't shake the $20 rod and reel. So cheap.
Cheap rods and reels work until they dont, which is usually when you have your 60cm flattie on the other end of the line. So more expensive gear absolutely helps you catch bigger fish. Also lighter and more enjoyable to use (so you fish longer and catch more fish), cast further (catch more fish), more responsive (hook more fish). Now unless you are fishing big serious fish, you dont need a Daiwa Stella or even a $150 reel; a Sienna for $60 or so is all you need (but you will notice the difference between a Sienna and, say, a Nasci at $150; you will also notice the kmart reel going rusty within a pretty short period); you will definitely notice the difference between a kmart fibreglass rod and a carbon fibre rod just by holding it.
Sure if you throw in a lump of fish on a hook and prop your rod up on a stick and lay back and drink some beer, or you plop your line off the end of a jetty, probably wont make much difference. And of course you can catch plenty of fish on a cheap rod, you can catch plenty of fish on a handline as well if you want to go for the cheapest option.
Its like any sport that involves equipment. Cheap stuff works, just not as well and not as enjoyably. You can smack a 230yd drive with a cheap golf club just as you can with a $500 driver, but maybe not as frequently.
Thanks for this. After a bit of YouTube research and this I have decided against the Kmart option. I'll go with the https://www.bcf.com.au/p/shimano-sienna-viper-fgx-spinning-c…
The Georges River has black fish, but fishing for them is an art. The Hawkesbury can be good for a mixed bag, but you will need a boat.
I only fished from the rocks and surf beaches.
I had National and Okuma. The former didn't last, while Okuma was amazing. But looking back, I'll just go to Kmart and buy something cheap but gets the job done.
A good spot in Sydney for flathead is the park east of dawn frazer pools Balmain. Good bream spot is the end of Louisa road Birchgrove
Thanks, yes I have had success there before, very nice spot.
Just a thought.

No seafood caught west of the Sydney Harbour Bridge should be eaten. You should release your catch.
No seafood caught east of the Sydney Harbour Bridge generally no more than 150 grams per month should be consumed.

Thanks for all the comments. Decided to go with the first comment https://www.bcf.com.au/p/shimano-sienna-viper-fgx-spinning-c…
