How Does Apple Track Product Returns?

I recently ordered a M2 mac pro which is expected to deliver by the second week of April.

After realising there is 15% GC, I placed a new order for the same configuration and the delivery date for it is last week of march.

Meanwhile the first order that I wanted to return just got shipped and expected to be delivered by next week.

My existing laptop died so I'm in need of a laptop ASAP. Wondering if I can open and use the laptop that arrives next week and then return the other one to apple as if I'm returning the original order….

Does apple track the returns against serial number #?

Is it better to return the laptop arriving from the first order and wait out for the second order to arrive? Both Laptops have same configuration…

Apple definitely cross-check serial numbers. They're printed on the outside of the boxes too.

It's your decision on waiting to save money vs urgent need now. We can't tell you what's more important to you.

Yeah Tim Cook will kick his ass if he tries to return the wrong Mac.

Wait till you hear how Amazon deals with returns. ;)

(i'm sure apple is tighter, but i don't think it is why they're so big)

  • just go online and start a return, the 2nd order will also get shipped soon and be there soon

  • Use the MacBook when it arrives, transfer it to the even newer MacBook when that arrives, return the first MacBook. You have two weeks to return from the date it arrives. Worst case is you need to back up your Mac to the cloud or a hard drive, go without a Mac for a few days until the newer one arrives, then set it up from the backup.

It's 14 days to arrange the return not get it back to them, you can ring on the 14th day and they will arrange/book for TNT to pick up, usually 5 days later.

Apple definitely record the serial numbers of Macs when ordered directly. They would also see that the device shipped had been activated and logged into using an Apple Id.

  • They are not the only one. HP Acer, Dell, Lenovo etc all have systems in place, and retains information such as when turned on, linked to the Internet etc.

I bought a HP Refurb from Grays which had 12 month warranty. When I had issues HP would not honour it, because the HP was activated 3 years beforehand. Eventually they did honour when I showed POP with details of the SN.

  • Apple track everything down to the individual components inside the laptop and their respective part/serial numbers.
