Selling on Amazon - Anyone Done It?

Evening all. Has anyone got any experience in selling on Amazon, specifically where you simply give them the items, and they organise everything else?

I wanted to supply my daughter's school with a lot of a relatively cheap item that some kids parents won't buy them. I ordered what I thought was 2000 of said item. Turns out they are actually 10 packs, so it will actually be 20,000 of this item. On Amazon these things sell for $10-12 for a 10 pack.

Is this worth selling? Will I actually make anything? Is it easy, or is it a hassle?

    Can't help with Amazon but…

Is this better off being sold as a bulk lot at a site like grays? Make it someone else's problem.

    • That was my theory with Amazon, someone else's problem. Otherwise yes, if Amazon is a pain I will possibly sell as a bulk lot, I've used Lloyds a number of times, so possibly just dump the lot with them.

According to amazon’s website it’s $50 a month, plus fees. … so probably not worth?

    link

my vote is to offload as bulk sell

$49.95 (excl. GST) per month + selling fees.

Really $55 once GST is factored in and you haven't sold a thing yet!

Rebrand as novelty water balloons and you might save on fees by qualifying for launchpad…

Yeah no, Amazon doesn't do 'that'….. Why would Amazon offer that service, they might as well buy direct and pocket all the profit.

Amazon will host your stock for you, pick it, and send it out for you as orders come in. They want you to supply it to them in a certain way, you have to create the listing, you have to do the words, take the pictures etc.

You do pay Amazon for everything, including 'hosting' your items in their warehouse.

Turns out they are actually 10 packs, so it will actually be 20,000 of this item. On Amazon these things sell for $10-12 for a 10 pack.

Flip them on ebay/facebook market place instead.

  • OP, I suggest you refer to this link to calculate your fees for selling via Amazon Fulfillment vs Fulfillment from your end.

Keep in mind that if you sell via your own Fulfillment then your listings will NOT be eligible for Amazon Prime

You will find that if you aren't a high volume seller then your own Fulfillment will be the better choice, but you run the risk of your item not being seen as much as they would if they were 'Amazon Prime' listings (eg. your listing may appear on page 5+). Amazon seem to have bias towards those that use their Fulfillment services, likely because it generates more $$$$$ for them.

For context, I have been selling on Amazon for a little under 1 year. I sell via my own Fulfillment due to the amount of items I sell and the selling volume.

Best of luck with your selling adventures.

Give it a go even if it's not worth it, you might get a taste for side hustle.

  • Done it but the contract stipulates secrecy!

    • Don't let that hold you back. Half the shit posted on these forums should have been kept a secret. But people tell us anyway and to be fair it can be entertaining. Fire away. 😉

Love to, given the fact that my pop was actually a judge!
Now affiliate programs are what keeps comparison services going and because I fully understand that it actually cost money to run this board.
When Amazon came to Australia I was all fire and flame in the hope of making business more efficient.
So I had 8000 special expensive items to sell and ebay was giving me a harder and harder time. First responses were very promising, I ended up burning nightlight oils to set it up with pictures like a store customers would just want to come back.
I do love due diligence and Amazon looked just like my friend to do business with.
But hey when it comes to deceptive practices they just kept on flooding me with new harsher conditions to the point where ebay suddenly became a much easier to do business with. So much lost time, Amazon told me with my turnover their commission went from 9% to near 45% with timeframes so tight it turned out to be wasted time to set it all up only to be hit over the head with unreasonable conditions. Alibaba was in a similar position, big promises and eventually poor staff to deal with. We had some bulk supplies but even Alibaba wanted quotes forever and never got us a real buyer. Nowadays I try to avoid both.
