Apple MacBook Air 13-Inch [2020] (MGN63X/A) M1 Chip, 7-Core GPU, 256GB SSD $1278 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

380

Not as a good of a deal as eBay Afterpay but i won't be buying product like this from online retailer via eBay due to past experiences. I am pretty sure many others might hold the same opinion.

Anywho, the same price available at Hardly Normal and Officeworks.

Tried to price match at Apple via their 133 Number but the maximum discount they can do is 10% of their listed prices on the website, which comes out to be a total of $1349 (list price: $1499).

They said they can't price match them exactly. Would love to hear if anyone else managed to do it in the past.

Planning to stack up with 15% off Apple gift cards.

You can get it cheaper from Apple education store using gift Apple Card 15% off.

  • Max 10% is a bummer

  • Wait it's been 3 years since the m1 came out? Holy shit did time fly.

So how's the m1 gaming and gpu productivity scene? How much has it improved since?

    • +2

      no

      (not much)

but if you care about running stuff like Switch emulation it works pretty well

  • The Gift card deal still alive?

This you can price match with Apple to get to $1349 then the gift card deal bring it down to $1146

Work out the same if you got discounted GC before and converted to JB GC.

    • GC 15% seems to have closed down now…and Afterpay over. Any other discount options.

  • This or Lenovo which was posted in Lenovo deal

    Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 3, 14" WUXGA, i5-1250P, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Quadro T500 4GB

    • This one is better.

      • Unless you want to run Solidworks or any other specific windows only workloads

      Pros for the M1 MBA
+ Way way better battery life (ARM efficiency)
+ Higher resolution glossy display (2560x1600 vs 1920x1200), better colour gamut and brightness
      + No fans no noise
+ Both are made of metal but the Mac is much stiffer
+ Works well with all your other Apple devices

      Pros for the P14s
+ Better included warranty (next business day onsite repairs for 3yrs - you would need to pay for AppleCare to get this with a Mac)
+ User upgradeable RAM (1x SODIMM slot, other is baked on) at much cheaper prices than what Apple charges, plus not an option on Macs.
+ User upgradeable SSD (1x M.2 2280 slot) at much cheaper prices than what Apple charges, plus not an option on Macs.
+ It can handle sustained loads which a fanless laptop, even ARM, can not.
+ It has more ports (Ethernet, HDMI, 2x USB-A) in addition to 2x Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) ports so no dongles
+ Runs Windows only software (and games) without losing performance through emulation or translation
+ Comes with more RAM, dedicated VRAM and storage for the same price

The M1 MBA would be a go to option for casual users so if you needed to ask, the Mac is probably for you. But at the same price point there is a lot of incentive to get the P14s as well for users who need capabilities not offered on the base model MacBook.

If you don’t need Windows specific software and don’t game much on your laptop, this laptop is actually epically good at being a portable machine. The M1 chip is just ridiculous at how powerful it is and the battery life is forever and a day. But if you need specific windows software or want to game… sigh.

In saying that my kid was playing csgo at 90fps this morning on my m1 air. I do have the thermal pad mod done though.

  • still no air M2 no party for me

  • Is it possible to get 512Gb with 16GB ram?

    • Yes, but not at a reasonable price.

You would be prob better off to get the 14" m1 pro if you need more ram/disk

      • You can get an M1 Air with 16GB/512GB from the AOC store with 15% discounted gift cards for $1541. Pretty reasonable I'd say, and much cheaper than M1 Pro 14" if you don't need the other specs that machine offers.
