Weevils in ALDI Flour? in The Flour?

Had some bags of Aldi flour, sealed shut. Opened it up and can see tiny weevils wiggling on the seal. In the bag full of weevils, some grown up into big guys.

Checked my other bag I think bought at the same time, full of weevils too. Check my other bags bought from Woolies even older than these bags, no weevils. Check my bags of branded flour, no weevils.

Guess this means I need to buy my flour from Woolies now, if Aldi's flour factory is invested with weevil eggs? And I guess now I have to disinfect my entire pantry in case they spread and lay eggs.

Are you disinfecting now or later on the weekend?

Eh it can wait. Too drunk now. I checked my Coles flour and no weevils there either.

Why so much flour in the pantry?

        • I like to diversify. And it was a good thing I did, if I had all Aldi flour then I wouldn't be eating waffles right now.

@AustriaBargain: Mmmmm waffles. Was wondering what to have as a midnight snack but don't think I've got vanilla ice-cream. Dang!

@MS Paint: I use canned whipped cream with strong maple syrup, the kind they won't sell you at the supermarket. And bake the waffles with buttermilk.

@AustriaBargain: Gotta get me some of that back alley maple syrup. Although I reckon Treacle is better tasting.

              • @AustriaBargain: Where do u get your maple syrup from and what’s the brand?

            • @MS Paint: Mmmmmmm weevils.

          • @AustriaBargain: You could be eating waffles with extra protein tho…

        • Cheap to dilute cocaine with for reselling.

you bought Klaus Shwab's The Delicious Reset! White Flour enriched with added Bugs for Protein …by mistake!!

    • +3

Lol, have a poz for almost making me chuckle.
Although you should have used just “enriched” and not the superfluous “added”.

You sure do have a lot of flour

  • +3

You certainly have a lot of flour stored up. I find it best to use the flour up before buying the next lot ;)

Weevils can happen from any company/store etc. Another reason to not leave the flour around for long times.

      Weevils hate this one trick.

    • I'd rather buy the flour with no weevils eggs in them. How is it possible that the two fairly recently bought bags from Aldi have weevils, but the even older bags I have don't have any? I even found a bag expired a year ago that had none. Did that bag just have especially sleepy weevils in them that didn't know it was time to wake up and ruin my waffles?

You really need to work on stock rotation to the sounds of it, so many bags of flour not being used….. Anyhow weevils happen, you might have got a 'bad' batch, if in date, take it back to Aldi. They'll exchange it for free.

        • I'm not carrying two bags of weevil infested flour back to Aldi to save $2. And I don't think I ever want Aldi flour again anyway.

          • @AustriaBargain: LOL all this complaining over $2…….

            • @JimmyF: I'd have paid $2 to avoid seeing weevils in my flour. And now I need to go get more flour because I'll use up all my other bags pretty quick.

And you know what, I already DID pay $2 for weevil-free flour. It was never meant to have weevils in the first place!

Weevils are in most flour. Put it in the freezer when u first buy it for a day or 2 and that will kill the eggs. I keep my flour in the fridge which seems to alleviate the weevils disaster. It’s not an Aldi thing.

    • I agree but the weevils being visible as soon as purchased indicates that the flour is quite old.

      • +2

OP didn't say they were just purchased, could have been sitting in the cupboard for months. :)

        • True.

  • just remembered…..couple bay leaves helps keep bugs away. do that in the future!

Years ago, in the midst of a moth infestation, we read that bay leaves repel pantry insects. Everyone from beetles to weevils, moths, cockroaches, ants, and flies is said to hate the herb's fragrance. The leaves can be placed in containers of flour, rice, and other dry goods, or taped inside cupboards and shelves.

    • Did it work?

    • +2

Sure crawling over the leaves slows them down a bit.

How old is the flour? It's going to grow weevils if you leave it long enough.

    • The flour was a month or so old. But I had even older flour with no weevils. Much older flour. It mustn't be true that all flour has weevil/flour mite eggs in them. Improper storage by suppliers must be the source.

Ideally you should decant flour into a sealed container as soon as you buy it. If there are weevils it will stop it spreading to other things.

  • Added protein….

  • Did that flour cross the bridge in Braunau?

  • While at everyone is saying leaving flour too long causes weevils, I have literally never had a problem and I sometimes go up to 12 months using a 20kg bag. That flour obviously had a problem.

    • Yeah I know right. The issue is clearly Aldi's flour, not my storage of it. I've had half empty bags of flour like four years old floating around with no weevils. Aldi is a newer player in Australia so maybe they don't really know what they are doing in terms of sourcing and storing flour, compared to Woolies and Coles who have been doing it here for like 100 years probably for all I know. Like when Red Rooster opens a new store, they employ people who have no idea what they are doing so they end up serving frozen nuggers.

Sometimes I don't use flour for a couple of months and then get into a baking mood and see that there are some little bugs in the airtight container I put the flour in. Same with a salad spinner my mum passed some rice to me in and I left a few grains. Luckily they've never spread to my pantry. But now I buy smaller packs and put them in the freezer for a few days then move it to the pantry
