Art Vs Entertainment. How Do You Consume Media?

Tying on to my string of semi-controversial, but hopefully positive and constructive forum posts here lately, I'm curious what you look for in media.

Do you, for example, watch movies as a mindless escape or distraction for a few hours? Or do you watch films to feel, learn and enhance your appreciation of the medium and the broader spectrum of life?

Do you like catchy pop songs that get stuck in your head that you can dance to and sing from the top of your lungs? Or do you prefer music that has resonant lyrics or feelings translated through carefully chosen notes, words or chords?

Maybe you've never even considered the art Vs Entertainment prospect before now and that's fine too.

Personally I prefer watching a long moody film like Drive My Car or The Human Condition Trilogy to whatever the latest 'buzz movie' is.

Unpopular opinion on that note, I got very little out of Terminator 2 and Kill Bill.

Let me know your preference and opinions where you'll all inevitable label people and things as pretentious or snobby if you don't connect with them ✌️

    I don't consume media because I spend too much time working/on ozbargain/being contrarian/etc.

Too sophisticated for me on a Friday afternoon.

I'd rather talk about religion and how I store my DVD's.

If you're not entertained by a movie or performance then what's the point. If art isn't entertaining then it's boring.

Both. I like a fun and entertaining piece of media but I do also enjoy the slower and more thought provoking ones too

  • Cant you just post a CharGPT quote just like all the other top tier shitposters are doing now days?

    • I'm sorry you have such issue with the posts I make. You don't have to engage with them if they cause you this much frustration

    How Do You Consume Media

    Like a drug addict.

    • A friend recommends me a show or movie. ("Pssst, hey man… just try this, you'll love it… it's what you need right now.")
    • Binge on it to the point of ruination and at the exclusion of all other considerations, re-watching the entire movie/series several times at a minimum. ("Mmm.. just one more time baby…")
    • Once I'm able to commit all of the memorable lines of dialogue to memory, then I've over-saturated my dopamine receptors and will lapse into a fugue state. ("Whoooaaa… I can't feel my mesolimbic pathways anymore maaaaan…")
    • Go through a long period of long withdrawal from all forms of entertainment media, achieve sobriety, reclaim self-control. ("I'll never touch that sh!t again!")
    • Then relapse several months later to repeat the process all over again. ("It's just one episode to take the edge off… I've got it under control… ")

The poll didn't have a "Whatever I'm in the mood for" option, so I didn't vote.

I watch films for many different reasons, depending on what mood I'm in. Either way, I find that even the educational/"art" ones are entertaining, otherwise I wouldn't watch them.

Music is the same - I'm a huge fan of good lyrics, whether the song is considered a catchy pop song or not. But I listen to whatever music I'm in the mood for - feeling sad, then it's sad music…at a party, then it's music that's good to dance to.

I like to think I am an enigma but chances are, Im not.

    • I watch absolute trash movies that are so predictable that it allows my brain to switch off. Hallmark movies are a fave.
    • I have a string of TV shows I watch but funnily, if they become too repetitive, I'll stop watching (think the Chicago Fire/PD/Med series, dumped those)
    • but! I also have shows on blu ray that I'll happily rewatch over and over. Latest is Grimm.

Usually watch at night. I dont do TV really anymore.

Music - still on vinyl and CD. Just sold a Walkman as Im over cassettes. Got $80 👍 Radio is OldSkool or 80s. Do love my 50s-70s. Again, comfort and predictable.

Art - happily spend days in a gallery. Frequently get told by security to 'step back' as Im old and blind but I love seeing the brush strokes. Like the older stuff up to post war, not a fan of modern/post modern.

Conclusion? Old fuddy duddy who likes old things and not much in the way of surprises 🤷‍♀️👵

  • I saw T2 at the cinema, it was so cool.
    .

  • Both. music is mostly for art, classical, chill wave etc. But movies etc general for entertainment. But that doesn't mean I don't want entertainment that makes me think, feel and develop etc.
