I would buy but none of the lads at the office have the same model so I wont fit in :(

    • +2

to fit into office environment…get some Comfort Craftsman

      • -2

Also if you want to join the Young Liberals

    • +11

Do you at least have a streak of exotic failed 8 leg multi @ $2 ea, and a habit of sneaking out early Friday arvo for drinks with the boys?

      • +3

        This guy 30 something corporates

    • That's odd, you're based in Melbourne as well! Are there no other young lads there?

    • +1

      Home office?

  • Has anyone else found that dress shoes and boots seem to fit larger than sneakers? Is this normal?

    • +2

Yeah generally you should go a half size lower for dress shoes/boots.

Also RM Williams goes on AU sizing so keep that in mind.

      • +4

I find you can't 100% get the sizing right if you just go by sneakers and then go half or full size down. Its best to go into the RMW store and get your foot fitted.

    • +6

I find that every brand fits different so I always try stuff on first. I have T-shirts labelled Medium, Large, XL, and 2XL that are all the same actual size…

      • Skinny, slim and loose fits!

I think technically, the shoulder width should remain the same, with the difference in the waist. But its more driven by marketing and style points rather than actual fitting these days.

      • depends on the country of manufacture, aiming at their local population. and local norms.

did some corporate shirts for Pacific customers. The Samoans couldn't wear the to-them tiny 2xl. Thanks, Indonesian company!

    • Yes, dress shoes fit larger than sneakers so you size down when buying dress shoes

    • Im a 9 in nike/adidas and a 7 in RM.
Running shoes are mainly US size, and RM are AU size which are 1 size smaller than US. Then add in that dress boots/shoes seem to run larger, im 2 sizes different. Took a lot of trial an error to figure this out.

      • +1

Yeah, for RM Williams I'd definitely recommend going into a store and getting a proper fitting. I had a similar experience in sizing difference - 10 Nike/Adidas and 8 in RM.

  • -4

    Bought 6 pairs.

    • +15

Mate! what if the RBA finds out!!?

    • Hi Broden

    • Lucky. That's an even number. Got to choose shoes that are divisible by 2 as you have 2 feet.

  • +2

Best to try exact model in person, even various models in RM fit differently

  • +6

When I step in dog shit with these does it smell better than a normal priced boot?

    • I'd like to know this too

    • +2

No but you'll step only on extremely expensive breeds shit

    • yes because you have the aroma of expensive tanned leather to hide it, rather than the 'scent' of vinyl

  • A shame they only have G widths

  • +1

No half sizes sold at David Jones?

    • Unfortunately not!

  • -1

Is it rude to respond to a deal with 'lol' ?

    • You should be used to the fact in this wonderful place people that drive miles to save 50 cents live in harmony with RM aficionados.

      • Fair. Bargains of all sizes

  • +1

Excuse my ignorance, but why are these so popular?
Everytime I find people interested although it's expensive

          seething

        • +1

Marvel T-shirts are like a litmus test, if you buy one of them, a trap door in the store should open up at the register and you're departed never to be seen again

Brother if that is your choice of style, that is on you

    • +17

They're well made, in Australia. For now. Hopefully they cherish that as their USP and don't make the mistake of killing their brand by farming out some manufacturing to "select partners overseas" or whatever.

      • I understand they were always made in Australia but the tanning of the leather was done in France. I'd rather the toxic effluents from the tanning process not go into the Gulf of St Vincent, but I guess Andrew Forrest felt differently so brought the entire operation back here.

I've worn a pair most days for almost 8 years. I've looked after mine and they are starting to look a little worn, and now need a resole.
I've completely worn down a pair of $100 boots in 6 months, straight to the bin.
Despite being a bit of a meme now, they are very well made boots.

    • +2

People who can't afford quality ends up buying $50 leather shoes which are uncomfortable, plastic, has no ability to be refurbed and ends up lasting 4-6mths of daily use, 12mths if you're lucky. Within a few years, they've already paid what would amount to one pair of high quality leather shoes which could last decades and can be repaired. In the long run, the people buying the $50 shoes end up paying much more.

I know because I've always been that guy buying cheap pleather shoes or hell even slightly expensive leather from but they never last.

    • +2

I went travelling to Perth last week. Pretty much everyone in the hotel were wearing RM Williams - even the women. They ooze quality, very comflrtable, and stylish. They also last.

      • Could be because the hotel may have been a Minderoo hotel, and Twiggy buys them all boots. I'm not sure if you're talking about the employees or the patrons.

      • It's borderline meme shoes in the Qantas lounge now. With all the Ozbargain sales and Melbourne bros rocking them with the black puffer, makes me much less inclined to wear them out.

    • +14

Cheap Aquila are fake leather made in China and are disposable
RM Williams are real leather made in Australia and can be resoled and used for decades with proper care.

      • Sounds like you swallowed the "real leather" pill that RM brainwashed you about.

My shoes look identical to the day I bought them, having worn them for roughly 1400 days

        • I've had aquila shoes before. Unfortunately the soles were not great and I ended up with plantar fasciitis after wearing them for 13m.

Each to their own, glad you enjoy your pair.

        • +2

          RM brainwashed you about.

If you're happy with your Aquila's then that's fine, no need to get upset that others prefer to buy locally made with high quality materials. If don't understand the difference between full grain leather and the glued together crap Aquila uses then there isn't any point trying to convince you, so I won't.

worn them for roughly 1400 days

I imagine my RMs would last decades if I also never left my mum's basement.

          • @sheamas88: I tried that once..

She thought I was leaving her for another mother-figure.

Then I found out, the basement has a basement..

  • These appear to have the outsole stiched in - is that going to make them expensive to resole?

I walk to work and so I’m fairly hard on my boots - I have a pair of Rodd and Gunn boots which I had to have resoled after 18 months at basically the original cost of the boot because the sole needed to be unstitched and restitched, and I’m already wearing through the replacement one. Will this be the same here?

Happy to spend the money for a pair that will last me a long time though.

    • +2

They do offer a repair service and their prices are available online
      https://www.rmwilliams.com.au/footwear/boot-repair-service.h…

Planning to replace the rubber top piece with my pair soon

    • I’ve got a pair of Craftsman RMW boots that are going on 15yo which I’ve looked after with regular care. I needed to resole them about 4 years ago after I’d worn them done past the stitching on one side, but the boots were still holding up fine. Cost me $135 because I did it when RMW had 20% off repairs, took two weeks, and when I got them back they’d also been cleaned, recoloured, and buffed. If it wasn’t for the creases and slightly looser elastic they looked almost like brand new boots. You won’t get footwear that stands up to use & abuse like that nor get the same level of service from most other brands.

  • These are made for you @benny2000

  • +1

Laces on RM williams sounds like sacrilege

    • +1

They don't just make Chelseas, but I'm also not a fan of laced boots with pull tabs. If you're looking for a trench boot in this rough price range, check out Red Wing Iron Rangers. More historical and fashun' credibility, more bulletproof, better build including eyelets (lifesaver with this style of boot), timeless design, and you won't get lumped in with all the finance bros and Ozbargainers who bought within the last 5 years.

      • you won't get lumped in with all the finance bros and Ozbargainers who bought within the last 5 years.

They're great boots but they don't look like officewear. Neither should RMs, but they're accepted here. That's the difference. I'd still like a pair of Red Wings though, one day.

        • I find it rather ironic that both boots were originally created for workmen, in this case, drovers and miners, and only one has been overworn by the inner city white collar crowd.

        • as soon as they became good enough for the PM to wear with a suit, it flowed down from there

    • I was wondering why dress shoes always seem to come with these crappy thin laces. Surely there's a better alternative

  • +1

I actually got these and had to return them. Definitely more for narrow feet.

    • Quick google search says G width's are wider than normal. Did you get the G's?

      • +1

Yes G is the standard and I think Randwick only comes in G (could be wrong). Sized up for comforts previously I just crept in to H so normally get H.
G is probably fine for most people, just found these to be more narrow than normal.

  • +1

Looks like the main selling point is they're well built and last a long time. If comfort is the priority, will people still get them? I recall trying them but the comfort level is below other decent brands.

    • +1

Think it just depends on your feet as well.
I got the RM dynamic flex and honestly don't find them that amazingly comfortable tbh. Yes they're great quality but you do pay for it, that and making sure the office bullies don't have any dirt on you.

  • Seems to be quite a good deal at $449.00 if you can get these from DJs.

    I could only find:-

    • Grant Stone - way more expensive

    • Meermin - quality probably better than Thursday Boots, but as compared to RMW, quality unknown.. - the shell cordovan boots look enticing tho

    • Thursday Boots - probably a bit cheaper but quality may also be cheaper than RMW or on par?

    • +2

Biggest advantage for RMW is that they're shipping locally, which means you can return if needed.
Much easier to manage if you do have issues as well. For the others, you'll probably be on the hook for international shipping fees at least to resolve any problem.

Bonus is they're made in Australia.
I'd say at minimum they should be same or better quality as the 3 you have listed.

      • Yeah I definitely should have added that to my comment above. Thanks :)

    • +1

DJ's returns are pretty easy provided that you are near a store.

Make sure you pay by card, not paypal or any of the buy now pay later providers and you can return at any counter. There are more hoops to jump through if paying by non-card methods to get a refund.

  • +2

You don't see heels like that much nowadays.

    • +2

You can still find them, if you have the right buns' 😎

      • +1

  • That's a weeks rent

    • +1

Unfortunately it's only two thirds of a week's rent now. We've been trying to get hold of you.

Im an old bastard, I got a pair when I was 21, im over 50 now.
Resoled once, the boots are still great and I still wear them.
I recently bought a pair for a 21st birthday present.
    They are worth it.

  • Man i miss the days pre-covid when you could get these for <$200 on sale

    • Lol. How far back is your time machine? I got my first pair of RMs for high school and I still remember my parents paying $350+ for them in 2006ish.

      • here & Here

Now a decent price is $400
Louis Vuitton and Andrew Forrest strike again.
