Dell Optiplex 7060 Micro - Rear USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 Addition

Just an FYI for all those (like me) who purchased one of the recent Optiplex 7060 Micro deals…

I was looking to ditch one of the rear DP ports (who needs 3??) but wanted an additional 10Gbps USB-C to fill the space. Dell were very helpful but the proper part was no longer stocked and haven't yet advised when it would be available. Some Google sleuthing revealed there were others in the same boat and the only part that search revealed was around $90, shipped from Germany via eBay - too much.

On a whim I broadened my search on Google and the part below popped up:

https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-usb-type-c-31-gen-2-alt…

I quizzed Dell but they advised the part wouldn't be compatible, as the chipset between the 7060 I have and the 7090 the part is made for are different. Obviously, I ignored their advice, bought it and it works perfectly. I now have 10Gbps at the rear (as well as the front) and, as a bonus, the new port should also be capable of displaying video over USB-C.

All that for $31.90 delivered. Bargain :-)

  • Thanks, will pick one up too.

Was searching for one when I purchased my Dell Optiplex 7060, but only came across the same Germany eBay listing and Aliexpress (which still had them for ~A$100).

When you get the part, connect the video cable first then loop the USB-C cable underneath the part and connect it to the port on the system board (that's why the USB-C cable is longer for the micro form factor part) then bolt it into the chassis. Simplest that way.

    • Finally shipped out.

Arrived yesterday, but postman didn't ring doorbell so had to pick up from Post Office today.

Will install tonight/this weekend. Can't test USB-C video output until Portable Monitor arrive from AliExpress.

Dell support is terrible, they have no idea what they are talking about 99% of the time.

  • Thanks for sharing. Only found your post because I was looking at doing something similar to mine and had alerts setup.

In my case, I was looking at a HDMI port instead but agree it's more practical to have another USB-C. Do you mind testing to see if it does display video out from your new port?

    • I can't test video functionality unfortunately.

      • No issues - cheers.

      • There is absolutely no guarantee that it will do video unless this is tested. eg you can buy a Dell XPS desktop with usb C port (3.2 2x2) and it can't do video.

The HDMI Port is also available from Dell, but $48 Delivered

      • Thanks for the link. Would still rather the USB port over a single use HDMI (not just because of price). Not all USB C ports are created equally but will do some further digging. It should if it's USB C 3.1!

Can confirm USB-C VIdeo Output (tested with this portable monitor)

  • Hi OP,
Great post. Would you happen to have a pic of the part and/or the part installed?
    thanks

  • Awesome!

    I'll give that a try!

  • Would this work with a 7040?

Finally tested USB-C output as Portable USB-C Monitor finally arrived today. Working perfectly.

It sure does! I also ordered one and installed it earlier this week. Installation was relatively easy and works a treat.

Got round to doing mine today. Aside from realising how badly my eyesight has deteriorated, everything went well and it works great :) Thanks for all the info.

  • Any warnings for those of us who might want to run Linux on these thingies after nuking Windows?

    • Just be aware that Ubuntu 16.04 SP1 LTS (64-bit) is the only officially supported version of Linux for the 7060 Micro, aside from the China Only XP lookalike, Neokylin.

      • Well, OptiPlex 9020 is supposed to only support Ubuntu 12 but I'm running Mint 21 without any issues.

    • Running Proxmox on mine… works a treat.

  • Thanks- I stopped using branded PCs some 10-15 years ago after a frustrating episode with a Dell machine & Debian.

I'll stick to what I know.

    PS: Not a Windows user.

Dell desktops are pretty good with Linux. Can't say the same for their laptops as I had issues with both Ubuntu on XPS and CentOS on Latitude.

Wow I was googling for something like this today and everything was $150, not to mention I had no idea if they would work. Thank you so much!

Thanks, OP! I got it setup in my 7060. I'm still waiting for my portable monitor with USB-C input from this deal. But I can confirm this is also working with my monitor using USB-C to HDMI cable.

  • OOS from Dell?

    • It's been sold out for a few months now, don't think it's getting restocked.

  • Does anyone have the part number? Is it R9J4K?

    • Just checked my Dell Order:

      Item Number: 492-BDCO
      Part Number: 6HRDV

  • According to this…

    https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/usb-c-for-…

…the new part is GMHY5. Not listed on the Dell Aus site but might be worth asking them.
