3m Tinted Security Film for Home

Two of our windows are in an exposed location.

We would like to make the windows more secure and also be able to open up the blinds during the day. People inside can see out but people from the outside cannot see in.

Any reflective tint (especially with mirror finish) would work in your circumstance for day time privacy - i.e. you will be able to look outside, but people outside won't be able to look inside your windows.

Just note the opposite happens at night - i.e. you will have difficulty seeing outside due to the tinting, but if your lights are on and the blinds open, then people outside will be able to see inside your window.

    • Thanks. Blinds are always closed at night anyway.

Any idea how much the 3m tinted security films cost?

      • This stuff is pretty easy to find on Amazon if you want pricing (well, maybe not the 3M specific stuff unless you go to .com instead of .com.au). The fancier films also provide some protection against broken glass.

I've DIYed this stuff at home, it's very easy for smallish windows. Use water with a drop of soap in it to apply under the film, squeegee out most the bubbles, and the rest evaporate out of the course of a couple of days or weeks.

  • Maybe speak to Tint a Car who also do homes.

The Security Film aka mirror tint might be a bit of an overkill. Any tint in general will add privacy from a distance. My folks have tinted house windows to block the sun, but from a few meters away you generally can't see in.

Any tint becomes useless if someone puts their face up to the glass. So if that is on the cards, you might need to rethink it.

Have a google and find a company in WA that'll send you samples to try or buy a small patch of each to put on a test window.

    • Good suggestion in relation to getting a sample.

  • Bunnings sells tinted films, not sure if they're good though.
