Hey,

Any one know how to stop chickens from flying over the enclosure net? I've cutting their feathers but still flies over.

Any recommendations?

Why did the chicken fly over the net?

Because they were an internet explorer

    • Because they are not interested in being your property - they are a sentient being with their own desires.

Because they needed to get to the road they wanted to cross.

Because the grass is greener on the other side

    • Because you are not eating them

  • Its getting out from its enclosure.

    Higher net. Lower chicken.

place a few deep fryers on the other side of the net. it will learn
        the tasty way

Can you put another net over the top?

The enclosure is pretty big, out of 10 thats the only one.i might just cook that one.

I had the same problem, i increased the height.
I have plain hexagon chicken wire about 1m high and dug under the ground level 200mm, then this product doubled up (in the link).
Remove any access for them move up through trees or on the coop and then fly over.

i also bought a black gate with hinge and two poles and cemented them in the ground for easy access

only clip feathers from 1 wing, leaves them unbalanced trying to fly. 2 short wings can mean they have balance and if they flap fast enough can get over net.

    • ^^^ This….

      • Still does not stop all of them but does for most layers

Works fine for our chickens…. YMMV

          • @JimmyF: How high is your fence? 1.2m was not high enough especially for the rhode island white cross white leg horn.

Increase the height of the enclosure.

    1800mm or higher.

If they're young they'll likely grow fatter and not be able to get out - but still increase it to 1800mm anyway.

Eat the bird..that will put paid to its fiendishly cunning, yet repetitive plan of escape

  • trying to escape your backyard because they can sense they'll be dinner in no time…

  • We made a net roof to stop them getting out. The net won't let chickens out, but it occasionally traps birds in. Just means you need to pick up a few bird corpses every now and then.

  • Clip feathers, make the bird lop-sided, pick up more bird corpses, extra nets… No one thinks there's a more sensible and humane way around this issue?

Pro's only clip one wing. Makes them fly in circles like abandoned jet skies.

  • Clip the long feathers.

  • You think that's a hassle?
I have a gang of bush turkeys hanging around my chooks. Occasional rapeage has been noted and other than chucking sticks at them I have no idea how to solve the problem. The chooks are free-ranging and a larger enclosure is not an option right now.

      chucking sticks at them

Replace sticks with bricks for greater success.

    • +1

hmmmm… i see you have already tried raping them and chucking sticks at them, if that didn't work you might have a hard task ahead of you of getting rid of them

    did somebody say KFC?

  • Are you doing one wing only? Dont do both.

When I was 5 years old, I kidnapped a neighbours chicken by sneaking into the coop which had a high fence around it.
I took the chicken back to my yard and gave it a bath in a bucket.
The neighbour caught me mid cleaning cycle, I told him the chicken flew over the fence into our yard.
    He didn't believe.
I was banned from kidnapping his chickens.

    • Wholesome story.

Did you want a clean chicken as your new friend, or did you just feel their chicken was too dirty and were returning it after?

    Flappy bird.

  • Cut the feathers on one ( 1) wing of the chicken and leave the other wing uncut. This will stop them from flying. Good luck

  • tie a dumbbell to it

  • Go freerange!

  • My mum told me to keep a hen with the rooster, that way neither would fly off. Not sure if this still applies to what we refer to as chicken today and I've no experience keeping chooks. Maybe you could also up your game in comfort levels and add a gym area so they get to flap their wings and whatnot.
