Qantas Rewards Bookings with OW Airlines

Hello guys!

I've got approx 1m QFF Points and was looking to book a rewards business class flight from BNE - BOM, now QF doesnt fly to BOM, however CX and EK do fly. Just wondering if anyone knows the best way to use QF Points on partner airlines if it doesnt show in the reward booking search?

Is there a workaround?

Thanks!!

  • Have you tried multi-city and put in the individual sectors? Eg. for CX SYD-HKG then HKG-BOM.

FYI MH also fly to BOM according to Google flights.

Could also try and fly QF to BLR or DEL and then get a domestic flight?

    • I tried Multi City with no luck on EK & CX, might try MH… I just think that my points are useless.

QF to BLR/DEL not available either checked multiple dates… Qantas compared to Virgin is SHITE!

      • With EK try going via KUL or SIN then DXB then BOM… so it may end up being MH SYD-KUL or CX SYD-HKG then EK KUL-DXB and then DXB-BOM.

Try going from Melbourne as well may bring up some different options as there is now a 2am EK MEL-SIN-DXB flight or Adelaide which has a MH flight

Good Idea, not sure how much fun a 2 am flight would be with a toddler hahahaa

          • @asbindia: How many seats are you looking for? That has a large bearing on your chances of finding something.

            • @djkelly69: Ah yeah, 2A & 1C

I think it's quite silly if Qantas only give pref to single travelers but that is probably what it is

              • @asbindia: No preference to single flyers just limited seats available per flight example may only be 4 business class seats per flight

  • When are you looking to fly?

    • Towards the end of the year

I just booked Cathay rewards to use Qantas and had to make the booking by phone as it failed every time I used the Cathay Website, I would suggest calling the Qantas FF number and talking to a consultant.

    • Thanks :)

Was that a QF Flight number or CX?

The problem is that you are competing with thousands of other people who also have 1m QFF points. You need to beat those other people.

    1. Book one year in advance. If you can secure a seat this way then you are pretty much stuck with that date.

    2. Check the website every hour, every day, every week, every month. Airlines sometimes release reward seats at random times on random days. You need to be constantly searching so that you are the first person to see and book those newly released seats.

    3. Go the long way around. Maybe, just maybe, there are seats available from BNE-SYD-CGK-HKG-KUL-BOM. It will cost more in points and taxes and flying time and you might need to spend money for an airport hotel on forced overnight transits but you might just get your goal of a business class reward.

At the end of the day, it comes down to how badly you want it and how much effort you are prepared to put in.

    • Thanks!

If you'd rather outsource this to someone else, I've seen some people in the Facebook group that offer this service. I think one is Points Coach and one is Points Whiz.

Ive booked about 12 business class rewards sectors using my qff.

Unless you are a high ff tier then you just need to be flexible and lucky. If you are flying anywhere near holidays then it gets even worse.

The multi city booking tool is usually the best option but feels like qantas has hobbled it over the years. It take a lot of patience to use.

Try BNE to either SYD or MEL as your first leg (or fly there first yourself). I often get better flight options from MEL.

Try flights to all partner hubs, eg HKG, KUL, HND/NRT, etc. Also SIN as BA fly there.

Try both individual sectors and combined ones. Sometimes flights have no stopover restrictions that you cant see.

There are heaps of award flights available and no you dont have to book 12 months in advance, it all depends on where you are flying.

At the moment flights in and out of Australia on Qantas points is the hard part. Once you get to pretty much anywhere in asia there is almost daily availability to anywhere you want to go, even next month.

Flying with a little one does make it even trickier as you dont want to do crazy layovers in airport.

Best options I would say is either fly to somewhere like SIngapore, spend a night or 2 and fly to your destination or save the points for another trip in the future.

  • fly mid week helps as well tuesday to thursday has way better availability versus friday to monday

  • Just sell your points on classifieds and pay cash for the tickets you want.

    • Yup - this. QF points are definitely not useless if you're prepared to bend the rules. 1m QF points will fetch you around $10k.

      • Really?!!?!?! Has anyone been caught for trying to transfer them? I might need to sell 600K points as that is the max you can transfer in a 12 month period.

        The Classifieds on OZB?

        • Yes people have been caught.

          a) Don't say you have a specific number of points 1038748points Qantas anyway 600k is the limit. Beter to reduce your exposure don't transfer to 6 people 100k points, better one big transfer.
          b) The risk is more with the purchaser than the seller, you get the cash, buyer takes the risk.
          c) Qantas doesn't employ a team of SWAT police officers, you are not breaking the law, they are your points, you are just naughty breaking the rules;
          d) If you have the points with qantas business rewards then there is no 600k point limit nor the concern with transfer as it can be anyone you do business with.

I've been working on this https://www.flghts.com.au/ to get all the reward flights from Qantas (at least for destinations that Qantas flies to). Some US flights became available today so there are a few return trips to the US

    • Wow, this is incredibly impressive.

Thanks! I'm slowly reworking it, I built it thinking it would make it easy to browse the reward flights. But the problem has been Qantas adds a bunch of reward flights, and then they are gone the next day. So whenever you come to the site there just isn't much to see. I'm going to try changing it so its more about setting up alerts.

        • That is really good!! The alerts sounds like a good idea, maybe push notifications for when flights you want come available.

    • Awesome idea!

Any chance of slowly adding more international options that don't involve Australia?

Ie, Phuket to Tel Aviv, etc, via one of their partner airlines, for business class…

    • Just discovered this and what a great site. As someone who spends a lot of time searching for reward flights, this really solves a pain point. The alert would be brilliant.

  • Check out China Airlines they have partnered with Qantas to many Asian destinations. Possibly use Qantas and them.
