So it seems you can pay $200+ for a king bed mattress protector (Sheridan, Minijumbuk) or $50 (Harris Scarf). I just want something cotton, quilted, thick, that will last. Is this something where expensive means better quality?
Best Mattress Protector?

leaning towards this brand. thanks mate.
I just use the ones from KMart. About $22. Protects the mattress, washes well. They are not thick however. They literally just protect the mattress.
thanks for the tip. sounds a bit thinner than i'd like but nice price.
Abstinence
well if that floats your boat…enjoy.
We use tontine luxe. All cotton, thick, lasts and you get 2 pillow protectors as well. (we do not use them)
A queen is about $85 minus any deal you can findthanks mate. a few people recommending this. found a great price so leaning towards this.
Best Mattress Protector is when you get $200+ for 50% off or free as a deal.
Then I saw Protect-A-Bed brand on $50 in big-W and $200 in HN, go figure.
I have been using them and they are goodwe're about two years in with our first protecta-bed. seems OK. i like that it is spill proof
had always bought the cheapest possible in the past and they last five + years
.I got a few versions of their protectors, no issues yet and even the Tempur branded also made by Protect-A-Bed.
I think the price is different all to do with the type of materials, the cheaper ones probably get hot, and less breathable.
Thanks. They look good if you want waterproof. I find waterproof versions a bit hot though. Nice price at Big W. Typical HN…..never forget the GST on items below $1k…ruined a lot of overseas online shopping for me!
If you can wait for an Aldi special buy, they have previously sold some pretty good ones. The claim is (also for every make's protectors? idk) that they are waterproof/miteproof. I can say that they certainly are reasonably durable and reasonably waterproof because they're a hassle to spin dry! Miraculously though they don't feel sweaty. I find it hard to believe that this is due to 'breathability' through the waterproof layer, maybe it is simply the quilting on top creating a bit of loft and allowing sideways ventilation. Having said all that, we need an unusual size (King Single) so I am also on the lookout for a new one and interested to see what comes of this thread, thank you OP.
Good to know re Aldi. I've decided to try Tontine Luxe Cotton. Great price on Amazon right now.
kmart, target etc.
otherwise a can of fabric protector and spray the mattress once a month.
Thanks. Good idea on the fabric protector though I'm not sure about sleeping on chemicals!!
Everything is made of chemicals.
When looking at mattress protectors there are two types, waterproof and non waterproof. The waterproof are hotter and the non waterproof are not good for bed wetters, but are good at protecting your matress and keeping you cool.
Make sure the protector is made from cotton, apart for the waterproof layer is you are getting one that has it.
Visit Kmart and/or BigW and check out their range and see which one is suitable. You can check their prices online before going into the store to see if any are on special and in stock at the store near you so that you can buy it if it's what you want.
Yes I find waterproof hot so that's why I wanted to go for cotton. Managed to get a great price on Tontine luxe cotton on Amazon. Have a gift card :D But if I didn't would probably check out Big W/Kmart in person.
Do the ones that aren't waterproof still prevent dust mites taking up residence in the top of the mattress?
Dust mites are absolutely normal. You just vacuum the mattress every so often and that picks up all their skeletons and poop.
what price did you get it at in the end?
$79
I ended up going via Amazon to buy a "Opossum by Protect-A-Bed Tencel Jersey Waterproof Fitted Mattress Protector" for $55 down from $80. Upon receipt I was NOT very impressed at value for money - it appears quite thin and flimsy (how long will it last I wonder?) and the waterproof top surface doesn't manage to cover the whole area of top of the mattress - it's a couple of cm short all the way around. Presumably our mattress itself is a little larger than standard spec. However it would be nice if the protector was itself a little wider than standard, so that any spill is sure to run off the edge rather than into the bed; also it doesn't help much with the idea that it will keep shed skin/dust mites off the top of the mattress.
By comparison the protector we bought at Aldi over a year ago is much more robust, only problem is they're only available occasionally and I have a feeling it's only in queen size.
I just use Tontine mattress toppers. Then, when they die, I leave them on (after washing) and buy another one. Eventually, my mattress is so protected, you'd have a hard time finding it 🤣
