Yes it slow, but gonna give this a go in my new MBP- plan to house my humungous photos library there. I currently store it on an external ssd which is super fast, but not very convenient. this is the lowest price ever according to the camels:

comes from Germany, so shipping will be about 2 weeks it seems.

enjoy!!

Ohhhh I remember this old trick, now works with the new MBP. Great

everything old is new again lol!

I was doing this also on my old MBA's using some el cheapo plastic adapter from aliexpress/ebay- worked fine, but was a bit flakey.

ps this price is even cheaper than the 512GB card- silly stuff!

      • I bought one of these for my M1 Max, even though I have 2TB storage in it. Means I can fill it with movies for travel and just whack it in when I go away. Paid nearly $300 about a year ago, so great pricing.

Are the SD card readers back in style again?

Heads up, there's also adapters for these slots so you can use any micro-sd (might be faster/better)

Check it fits your particular MB etc etc

I remember using these adapters (which you can get from Ali/eBay for a couple of $) when I was using my 128GB Macbook Air.

  • ordered one yesterday. cheap and super portable storage upgrade solution for macbooks

  • Thanks got one.

  • Reviews say it fits flush; I can’t find any pics showing this?

    • +1

It does, just the very edge of it sticks out about 1mm, just enough so you can get a thumb nail under it to remove it.

    Good for time machine backup?

    • it works, but I read reviews saying that it significantly reduced battery life

      • Wouldn't that be the case also whenever the card is in and mounted in the system?

It's not like Time Machine constantly works, it backs up periodically.

are macbooks nowadays (since M1) support internal upgrade? (replace)

are all macbooks like this now?

    • Not anymore. All Soldered.

    • It's an old MBP in that video. It's in the description.

slow a55 storage with a premium because its 'flush'

    • +1

Uhm, yes, you got it right.

The alternative is a faster card sticking out 1 cm or so. Then somebody says why not an external TB4 SSD.

  • How does this work if you dual boot using Bootcamp? Does it get detected as an external drive automatically? I've used the WD Paragon app to format external HDDs to work on both Windows and MacOS, does that work for this too?

After a bit of Googling it seems formatting it as exFAT allows it to be detected in both Windows and MacOS.

    • wouldn't use it to bootcamp- it is really way too slow. also, bootcamp not available with apple silicon

      • That's not what I meant. I have a Macbook with an Intel chip, and wanted to understand how it works when dual booting Windows and MacOS.

Turns out it doesn't fit the 15" MBP.

  • Now $241.04

  • Damn, wish I didn't miss this, I definitely would have bought.

the deal is back up again i believe

      • My hero.
