24 Month Phone Contract with No Sim Card

Hey everyone,

Is anyone aware of a telco that does a phone only plan/contract without the need to get a sim?

Through my work I'm getting $60/month towards my phone plan however I need to produce a monthly bill to get the reimbursement, I'm not keen on singing up to a phone+sim contract as it will be $90+/month and I'll be out of pocket a fair bit.

What I'm looking to do is just get a phone on a 24 month contract close to $60/month and then getting a 12 month prepaid plan like Boost which works out around $12/month which I'll pay for out of pocket.
All of the telcos I've checked want to bundle in a sim with the phone as part of the contract

Cheers!

does it have to be a telco?

Both apple and samsung stores let you buy a mobile on a monthly repayment plan over 12/24 months.

AFAIK the telcos require you to have a sim plan with them for them to be willing to sell you a handset over 12/24/36 months.

    • I'll take a look at Apple directly, that could be an option

Now why would any telco credit you $1440+ interest free without a plan? They'd be taking risk and losing money on the debt after two years because of interest they pay on the loan on their end.

    • I thought that might be the case but wanted to see if there was anything out there with the rise of Afterpay and other services etc.
Maybe even if there's a plan but you can cancel the sim, or the plan itself is really low around $5/month and just port out and wear that as part of the cost.

      • Cancel the phone plan and they will give you the bill for the rest of the phone payments upfront, they won't let you spread it over two years. Maybe you could get an iPad or something with data plan for $60 a month? Telstra used to have $15 a month data plan, unlimited at shaped speeds after you hit the monthly limit, but not anymore sadly. I think it's $20 or $30 a month now.

        • Not looking to cancel the phone plan, but if the handset was $60/month + $5/month for the sim I could just have a new number on that new sim then just use my Boost sim and wear the extra $5/month.
Issue I'm seeing is that most of these sims work out to be around $30/month for not much

          • @PeelThis: If you find someone offering interest free handset with a $5 a month plan, submit it as a deal. A lot of us would want in on that for the $5 a month plan alone.

@AustriaBargain: Probably, you can try signing up with Optus. Once you get your phone, put your mobile plan on temporary suspension over chat. They can put a temporary suspension for 3 months. So, you will have to chat every 3 months to extend the temporary suspension. This suspension costs $5.50 per month.
You can give any reason for temporary suspension.

After reading the rest of your post; you probably will do best going for one of the JB/GG/HN 24month plans; as i think the monthly repayment will be a bit closer to your $60 budget

    • & if you get them with a GC offer, the value of the GC effectively subsidise your sim cost and you might even come out ahead (if the offer is sweet enough)

sounds like you want a leasing company and not a telco

If you haven't already, you should probably check your workplace policy on mobile phone bill reimbursements. Many companies reimburse usage only, not the phone component.

    • Manager is getting $90/month which covers the phone as part of it, but good point on checking the fine print.
