Grandson is looking to purchase his first car (it won't be a Camry). He's looking at a late model auto Lancer. I believe the transmission maybe CVT. Reading about the drama with CVT's, is it all CVT's or have some manufactures managed to sort it?
Mitsubishi Lancer Purchase - Is CVT a Concern?

Lancer :D
Personally unless it's coming with multi year manufacturer's warranty, I'd avoid a CVT.
As long as its not a Nissan CVT. it should be fine. Just change transfluid every second or 3rd oil change. should be fine
Just as this guy says, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqZseFMPooA
@pegaxs
TRIGGER ALERT
“rEv uP yEr EnGiNeZ!!1!!1!”
I don't think they're too bad.
I drove one YEARS ago, and it wasn't particularly enjoyable, it revved a lot etc. Compared to a more modern CVT it felt odd.I think the final year model Lancers (2017*) had a 10 year warranty, so the company has a bit of faith in them.
*Edit:Correction 2018
OP you asking in the Toyota forum, but this has all the info you need https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVSnrX-LMXo
Bit boring but it works lolIt’s DCT that had the issues… CVT are just slush boxes.
A slush box usually means torque converter, first time I heard anyone call a CVT a slush box.
And it was the VW dry clutch DCTs. The wet clutch DCTs never really had problems.
Daughter has a Lancer.. great car… goes surprisingly well
Careful if the ABS module dies, 2000+ from mitz for part, or get used one and have it re-programmed
I knew about the ABS module but I think that may have been in earlier models.
MIVEC just kicked in yo!
For some reason Lancers get a bad rap, but having owned one I have to say it was about the most reliable car I had.
guy at work has had 3 of them over the years.. swears by em
Lancer using Jatco CVT from Nissan and Jatco CVT had huge reputation, being a bad one, that almost killed Nissan back then.
Not sure about their new current CVT after the last decade of CVT timebomb fiasco.
I've had one since 2009, the CVT was replaced at around a year due to a feedback noise on over-run. It has now had the same transmission for 12ish years and I've replaced the fluid once (prolly need to do it again soon) and the car has 120K+ kms. Still drives well, no issues with manual shifting or slipping under heavy acceleration.
Please note this is a sample size of 1 purchased new by a then 29 year old mechanic and hasn't got a rice bubble flamethrower tune, YMMV.
10 year warranty on Mitsubishi so you should be okay.
If you drive it like a rocket then you'll definitely going to feel frustrated.
He's a 17 year old with his head screwed on.
You make sure he shows you his yearly insurance certificate of currency. Too many of those mishaps on OzB.
It's my grandson. His parents will have the car in their name and it will be insured 100%.
@CurlCurl: Your not supposed to write the illegal parts to be immortalised in print haha
As long as he doesnt make it look like a rice evo. Than it should be ok. I had one, it was nice but the paint was shit. Clear coat came off in 3 years.
Had one once. About 2016. Weird to drive. Couldn't wait to get rid of it. KIA was much better.
There are 2 types of CVT, sh!t ones and possibly-okish ones, older ones are money pits.
AND, any CVT is only good in a low power/tq engine and in a lightweight car.
Normal auto is much better than CVT, more realible. CVT only gives minimal 'real world' economy improvements so, considering nightmares, they are not worth it.
Avoid any transmission made by JATCo.
I have a 2012 ASX which is a jacked up Lancer. I've had zero problems with the CVT with just standard servicing.
I've got a 2011 Outlander and no issues with the CVT. I think the early Nissans didn't have a transmission cooler and cooked the oil. When I changed the oil on mine after 6 years or so the oil looked the same as the oil replacing it. The car estimates the degradation based on temp and time and you can read it using an OBD reader. Mine was something ridiculously low, around 5% degraded before I changed it.
The lancer Cvt is not a reliability concern. The CJ and CF series cars are considered very reliable. The platform for these cars went for a very long time. They are also relatively cheap to service with intervals of 12mths/15k km and parts are readily available.
Our second car is a 2009 rx lancer sedan owned since new and no costly issues to date as it nears 184k kms. Our daughter has a 2014 cj lancer Gsr hatcchback owned since new and nearing 90k kms with no issues. Lancers nay not be the the height of tech but the 2.0 and 2.4 litre engines give them reasonable performance and they a nice mid size. Not a Lancer, so not directly relevant, but given the concern you indicated about CVT's - we have been driving a 2009 Nissan XTrail with CVT since new and other than requiring normal servicing it has never missed a beat. My wife and I love the CVT but it did take a while to get used to it compared to what we had been driving. For a largish car it is very quick to respond to the accelerator, tows and climbs very well.
Many friends have purchased XTrails following our experience and none have had any issues. Like all products there will be good and bad stories, and the bad stories sadly make more news :) Our experience has been excellent.
Good luck to your Grandson with his first car. Mine was an early Ford Capri which I remember fondly. Probably gives an indication of my age.
Four or or V6? I'm older, my first car was a FB Holden
Mechanic I knew dropped a 302 V8 into his Capri.
Four. I was still an age that my parents had some control and vetoed the V6. Sad thing is we become our parents and when a daughter wanted a performance car I resisted ….
Had an Outlander CVT. No issues at all. I didn't LIKE it at all and would avoid one now, but reliability wise it was fine. I just don't like the way it drives.
Bought our Lancer brand new 2012 which has a CVT, and experienced no issues.
Grandson purchased a 2017 Lancer last week.
One elderly lady owner from (Inverell) country NSW , 28,000ks. Absolutely as new, $21,100. Very lucky boy.
I had a Lancer VRX with the CVT transmission some years ago and it never gave me any issues at all. But as with everything, you'll find good and bad stories, so it's really down to how well it's been maintained.
