Kmart Beanbags - Just Bad Luck or is this a Common Problem?

We bought two beanbags for the kids.

Both had faulty zips - the first one's zip was open and I tried closing it a little to make sure it closed. No problem closing, but it wouldn't go back. I ended up filling it up with the beans (3 bags of beans at $11 each!) and zipped it closed. I thought maybe it's meant to be that way to avoid opening and causing a huge mess.

A few days later I opened the second one and discovered this one's zip had the same exact feature. I filled it up with another $33 worth of beans and zipped it closed.

I educated the kids about being careful with them as it was messy enough filling them up.

Two days later my kid is lying on it watching the TV and the zip track suddenly opened all by itself and out spewed thousands of beans. The zip track is stuck open as there's no way to move the zip back and re-close it. Such a mess, they were everywhere. I scooped as much as possible and put it back in, then vacuumed up the rest for aaaages and days later they are appearing out from under everything in the room around the clock.

I haven't done anything with it yet, it's sitting in the corner. Hoping the second one doesn't do the same thing.

Are the beanbag zips meant to be this way? Has anyone else had this happen with them?

Didn't know exactly what you buy, have you try to check product reviews what others say?

Not sure about the Kmart bean bags specifically but generally you need a paper clip (or similar) to close off and reopen a bean bag. The zipper normally finishes under a hood of material to prevent accidental opening.

Using the paperclip trips a little safety lever inside the zipper to prevent accidental opening. Read this for more detailed info.

LPT: Fill up a bean bag in an empty bath tub. This helps contain any beans if they fall out.

Fill up a bean bag in an empty bath tub

Another bonus is that they make an empty bath tub more comfortable to sit in.

had an outdoor beanbag, my kid invited a buddy over who decided it would be funny to get a pair of scissors and cut a hole in the bag and then jump on it. Backyard looked like snow.. went to buy a wetvac, and multiple garbage bags later, i managed to clean up most of it. To this day, still find them around the backyard (and this was like 5 years ago)

  • Get a beanbag liner/inner so you can take the cover off and wash it.

Like what Muzeeb said, you a need a paperclip to open and close bean bags properly.

I've had 2 Kmart beanbags for probably 5-6 years now, never had problems with the zips.

Only issue I had was that the dog peed on one, wasn't bothered to clean it so gave it a wash. The other has become a replacement bed (tbf we don't use it too much ourselves anyway as of late)

  • Yep, it’s a safety thing to stop them coming open unless you are trying to.

BUT, it’s a Kmart product, not a brilliant example of high quality.

  • OP you have learned how poor most of Kmart generic brands are . Just bin return it for a defective product refund and buy elsewhere .
