Humble Baked Beans Price Rise

Went to Coles today and had some Baked Beans on the shopping list.

Usually like the Coles home brand one and as recently as a couple of weeks ago I got a stack of them at 65 cents per can.
Today’s price for the same baked beans: $1.10. So a 69.2% rise in price essentially overnight.

Inflation (which is clearly been driven by profit seeking supermarkets) is out of control.

    • cheaper than ever. OP is lazy

  • Costco hotdog and drink are still $2 tho

    • Loss leaders

      • Doubt it. Same with their roast chickens; they aren't making a loss on them, they just aren't making as much profit as they could per chicken or per hotdog.

        • They would be losing money if you include all costs. They have to pay someone to cook them and serve them too.

    • That’s a branding exercise and good optics for Costco as a value store. Fun story about the hotdog, the co-founder told the CEO he'd kill him if price of hot dog combo went up (from US$1.50). Read about it - https://www.today.com/today/amp/tdna192310

  • Back in my day, a can of coke was a dollar, a dollar!

  • Back in the good ole days a man could buy a four’n’twenty Pie for 24 cents !

    • Twenty and four right??

      • you're quick aren't you leeroys_dad, not slow AT ALL!

    • I thought their name is actually based on the nursery rhyme from the 18th century or earlier…

      Sing a song of sixpence,
      A pocket full of rye.
      Four and twenty blackbirds
      Baked in a pie.

Supermarkets are definately taking advantage of inflation to increase prices on their products. Sure inflation impacts on food manufacturing etc, but I would bet every dollar I have that they add extra on top of inflation to boost their profilts.

  • Plain and simple corporate greed from Colesworth

    • what would you charge, in your supermarket?
      you'd sell at a loss…? $digger yr a genius

  • Inflation is a genuine problem but it's not 'out of control'.

  • Whilst there's no doubt that inflation plays a part in the price increases we're seeing, you can't dispute that despite the "challenging times" which "we're all in together" that these places are posting bigger and bigger profits whilst the average person is struggling to put food on the table. Those who can afford the extra costs, good for them, but for those who can't.. things are a huge struggle. There is absolutely price gouging going on and the consumer is powerless as these are essentials.

Our budget has blown out exponentially over the last 12 months or so, fuel literally doubled in price (though it's settled a bit now), costs for groceries shot up, electricity and gas went up, car registration and insurance went up, private health jumped as well. I'd estimate it's a 13-15% increase to overall annual expenses. but my wage has only increased maybe 2 to 3% on what it was. Understanding that I'm comparing apples to beans here as wage =/= expenses but the 2-3% increase to wage doesn't cover the 10% increase to costs, not even close.

They put the price up because they can :)
If you look at actual cost vs perceived cost you’ll find some nice info. A lot of shoppers don’t even know what they paid for a lot of items, just a ‘rough’ figure which can be pretty off. So yeah, supermarkets and brands are all over that 👍

  • lying government will tell you inflation is under 10%, actual inflation is more l ike 25-50%

They mix in crap you never use or buy into the calculations so the number is lower. In reality, all the goods you buy daily e.g milk, bread, eggs, meat, vegs, fruit + rent etc have all gone up 25-50%+++

This is a very dangerous problem for the country, and it's being downplayed!

  • Baked beans are usually made with white beans such as haricot or cannellini, and served in a tomato sauce along with spices and seasoning such as paprika, onion powder, salt and sugar. .

Go to 'the source bulk food'. Buy your beans as little or as much as you wish.

  • Covid-flation. Those lockdowns weren't free. And arguably weren't due to Covid. Lockdowns were due to people.

  • Canned beans are awful compared to homemade beans. Make it yourself if you want.
