170

Bano is giving cashback fo first-time payments for gas, water, utilities and subscriptions. Rules is a bit complicated, but if you already have the card anyway.
For more information about Bano, just search other threads on ozbargain.

Cashback rules:
Category 1: Gas, Water, Utilities
Category 2: TV, Music & Streaming, Apps, Games and Software

During promotional period (1st March - 1st June 2023):

  • Earn $5 cashback when a new payment is made for one of the services in Category 1, with a $50 minimum spend. If another payment is made to a service in Category 1 within 3 months, the user will receive an additional $10 cashback
  • Earn $2 cashback when a new payment is made for one of the services in Category 2, with a $10 minimum spend. If another payment is made to a service in Category 2 in the 2nd and 3rd month, the user will receive $3 and $4 cashback respectively

So, I guess, maximum is $15 for Category 1 ($5 and $10) and $9 for Category 2 ($2 + $3 + $4) if you can meet all their conditions. I probably will only do Category 1

Every time I see this company I think baño.

    • wonder if they provide free toilet paper

  • What's the best way to pay utilities bill with this?

I tried to add the Bano card to Beem but it won't accept it.
Does seem to work with Sniip but there will be a small fee with Sniip.

Or is a better way / way to pay direct?

    • Most utilities company accept one-off manual payment for me. Sniip is a bit hit & miss, as it's rather random. When I paid my monthly council rate, it sometimes appear in Bano as council itself then the next time charged as Sniip (the exact same bill, just different months). It's also true, that I have to use card with 0.85% fee, they declined the direct transfer

      • @hanofee When you say a one off manual payment, you mean you call them and give credit card over the phone?

@abs898 great suggestion, will give this a try thanks!

        • +1

either call (if it's mentioned on the bill) or most of them like Southeast Water or Energy Australia for me, can pay online on their website directly

          • @hanofee: Is the Bano card a debit card? Just trying to work out the fee on Sniip. If debit card seems to be 0.65% surcharge.

Looks like I can play direct to Urban Utilities on their website as well with a 0.51% fee, thanks!

            • @Moo Deng: Yes debit, when I added the card number on Sniip, it charged me 0.85% (applepay options charging 1.5%). Is it supposed to be 0.65%?

              • @hanofee: @hanofee That's what their pricing page mentioned?

                https://sniip.com/personal-payments/

Edit: Ahh that looks to be right since it's classified as a prepaid debit card?

                • @Moo Deng: yeah, showing as "prepaid" under my payment method. I don't know how they classify prepaid debit & normal debit card though

Try using Australia BillPay. It accepted Amex via Paypal (or any other card too)

      • Does Australia BillPay charge a fee for using their website for payment?

        • Nope. Been paying all my utilities and council rates via it

Been using Bano for a while been great, although.. I just had a payment for $100 mess up pretty badly. It somehow went through and also failed, I have both a failed transaction and a successful one. The vendor have not received my money, and Bano support are adamant that the payment went through on their end.

So I'm at a loss of $100 with Bano not taking any responsibility.
I don't know what else I can do, would hate this to have been a bigger purchase and my money just go poof

They don't seem to have a direct phone number.
Their chat support is just plain awful.

      • +1

Yep was a dreadful experience. They had me contacting PayPal and the website I placed an order through even though I could tell the issue was with them (since there was no PayPal transaction) , I emailed support after several days of the chat being utter useless, the email support told me straight away the funds are held up in the Visa system and would bounce back to my account in 3-8 Business days, which it did on the 8th day.

        • +1

          Yep was a dreadful experience.

You literally had the baño experience.

    • I did have the same issue but the money was credited back to my a/c after a while. Plus I have received cash backs on the Krispy Kreme and McDonald's promo - so they are great to deal with but a slow process.

  • Bano used to allow you to top up by amounts as low as $1 via Apple Pay. Now their minimum top up amount is $100.

    Category 1: Gas, Water, Utilities

Other than your Electricity bills, what else would fall under Utilities? I assume Internet / NBN charges?

    • T&C's state 'utility bills, energy bills, water bills, phone bills, internet bills'

Not sure if that was there previously.

      • +1

        Hmm. That's new

        • +1

          Yeah, there’s no phone/internet before

          • @hanofee: Just an update, I can confirm internet is now accepted. Paid my NBN bill 2 days ago, no automatic credit though, so had to raise it to CS. Got the $10 cashback the day after

  • So I made a $50.26 utilities charge onto my Bano card on 3 March.
I got 11c cashback (so 0.21%), but still haven't received the $5 cashback for the first charge.

I don't think I'm going to bother again "within 3 months time" for the additional $10 cashback …

    • +1

Contact them via in app chat, they asked me to upload receipt last time and credited straight away for NeNe deal

    • I am in the same boat as you.
I only received a measly 12c for paying my electricity bill.

They said to wait 5 days, but I see that @Jpo already received their cashback within a few minutes.

  • +3

Received $5 a few minutes after making a $60+ payment via BPay to my electricity provider

    • What service did you use for the BPay payment?

      • Holy crap, @Jpo is right! It worked for me when I paid through Pay > BPAY instead of using the Virtual Card!

        @DoctorCalculon
He means Pay > BPAY within the Bano app.

        • +1

Yep! I found out after I made the payment using my virtual card on my energy provider's site.
I should have just used Bano's BPay function (which I completely missed).

          • @DoctorCalculon: I thought I was being clever.
First, I paid half my bill ($55) then I paid the other half ($55) straight away.
Did not fool Bano haha 😂

            • @wutang01:

First, I paid half my bill ($55)

You should have received cashback for the first payment assuming it was for category 1.
But you would have had to chase up customer service, which is a big hassle.

  • Thanks @Jpo. Tried regular payment with Bano card 2x but did not get the $5/$10 (paid to Origin) after 2 weeks wait.

Re-tried using your BPAY suggestion and got the $5 within a few mins. But not the $10 for the second $50 … I assume this will come later?

    • But not the $10 for the second $50

I think the second payment has to happen on a subsequent month.

      • Hmm. It just says within 3 months. So technically it can be immediately after.

        • They also state:

Maximum 1 redemption per category each month.

You should get cashback for the second category if you tried that on the same month as the first catgeory.

          • @DoctorCalculon: Yeah I'm not going for the second category

          • +1

@DoctorCalculon: Thanks for pointing that out ('Maximum 1 redemption per category each month.')
I missed that as well, and had the same misunderstanding as @kickling ('Hmm. It just says within 3 months. So technically it can be immediately after.')

            • @wutang01: I must be blind. I can't see where it says 1 per month

              • @kickling: It's not in the OP.
In the app scroll down until you see the image "Claim a bonus when you use Bano to pay bills".
It's the 2nd bullet point in the Activity conditions there.

  • Update. Got my $10 just then. So that means that you don't have to wait til the next month

    • May I know if ur paying the same bill but divide it? Or completely different one?

      • I can pay any custom amount to my origin bills on the website. 1 cent. $50. Doesn't matter. Bpay too (not sure about minimums)

        • You should also be able to pay different energy / utilities bill each month, and still be eligible, I suppose.

        • I tried to pay electricity bill again. No luck with the $10 :(

          • @hanofee: Well, according to their T&Cs it is maximum 1 redemption each month for each category.

            • @DoctorCalculon: Ikr, just trying my luck though, it’s ok. Will try again next month

    • So the $10 came 4 days after paying your bill?

    • This second $10 isn't unlock for me today (1 April).
Tried a new gas bill, paid half via Bano BPAY and the other half via Bano virtual card.

      Awaiting the final utilities cashback.

      • +1

I had to contact Customer Service and they manually applied my second $10

        • same here. they did it faster for the 2nd one though, within a day for me

  • I topped my apple account which falls under Cat 2, and I did get my $2 credit.

  • Well, the good news is the Bano Virtual Card unlocked my Spotify $2 cashback straight away

    • Do you know how to make an ad-hoc payment for your current Spotify plan / subscription?
I don't see the option anywhere under Spotify account management.
I was only able to switch from PayPal to my Bano Virtual Card. The payment won't be taken until next month though.

      • I don’t think you can …
You can’t even change the charge date like you can with Netflix

Feel free to prove me wrong though!

        • +1

Feel free to prove me wrong though!

Can't prove you wrong as you are completely right. :-)

  • Do you still get the small cashback % amount if you pay via BPAY? Or is that only if you use the Bano Card?

    • Bpay qualifies too

      • Yep qualifies for the $5/$10 cashback but there is also a small % as well if you pay with Bano card, not sure if you get that if you pay with BPAY too?

Just made a $50 payment for electricity about an hour ago but no sign of any cashback yet. I think I might have to chase it up, upload a screenshot to chat, etc because it was listed as DEFT Payments so I am not sure how they would know if that is Utilities or not.

        • +1

Yes there is a small % credit, I got 2c back with my last payment

  • can it be the same utility biller in category 1 in different months bpay done to qualify or does it have to be another utility biller with a different bpay biller code to qualify for the $10? anyone try doing a bpay to pay of their zip account and receive the promo credit?
