Finding Major Lotteries Which Benefit Causes and Not Private Businesses

A long time ago I regularly bought lottery tickets knowing most of proceeds went to hospitals (or good causes) with a small admin component for running expenses. Since these have been sold off and are mainly run by private concerns now, where a greater portion of turnover is retained rather than going to the community, I have been thinking who are the non for profit groups.

I believe there is one lottery in the west and I am sure there are others. Do you know of any?

    Royal Melbourne Home lottery

  • When I was younger, I used to see these random lotteries in books like the Readers Digest and assumed they were all scams. The prizes would be things like huge mansions etc. (I still don't know whether they are or not).

    • Oh they're still going strong. lmctplus is an example I can think of, they're all over the place.

Look up one of them on Instagram or Facebook and you'll see dozens of them thrown in your face for weeks to come.

Not saying lmctplus is a scam, but some of them probably are and have been known to be (eg: the owners 'best friend' magically wins)

      • eg: the owners 'best friend' magically wins

haha that was exactly what was on my mind at the time!

        • At the end of the day you can't be 100% sure with these sorts of "win a car or gold bullion" things. It can come out later that they were a scam, but your money is already gone.

If you really want to gamble then powerball is probably the 'safest'

  • "rsl art union" raises money for war veterans
"your town " raises money for various social services for kids

Both have new house winnings . There are others that are similar as well (win a house)

I cant comment on how much of the earnings they retain, or what the admin% is etc … you'd have to DYOR.

Lotterywest still does a decent job of supporting the community. You can read the Wikipedia page paired with the annual reports.

But keep in mind all lotteries support children, with 100% of the profits going to children - because, hey, we're all somebody's children.

I thought it was mandatory that all lotteries including powerball, ozlotto etc had to donate a portion of profits to charity anyway? Not sure what the percentage is though.

I support RSL art union - call it investing in myself if i s’pose. Plus I might win a house - though my odds are probably lower than an actual lottery ticket because you need to be top 3 to win anything, as opposed to anyone can win even something small if you have a few of the right numbers.

  • mater, ms society, surf life saving, deaf society

  • Deaf lottery.

  • Endeavour is the other one others haven’t mentioned

  • In SA, the lotto still goes to hospitals. They just privatised the running of it.

Others, check out People's Choice. Money goes straight to individual sellers.

    • Oh that's awesome, 100% of proceeds to community groups with their community lottery. And yes, when you buy a ticket you nominate the group the proceeds go to.

Last couple of days left for their next draw.

      • I haven't submitted a competition before so I thought I would try it out for the community lottery raffle
