Best Day and Time to Go Flemington Markets for Fresh Produce

Went to Sydney Flemington markets in Homebush on Saturday and was so impressed by not only the freshness and variety of the stuff there but the cost.

Most things were at least 25 percent cheaper than Colesworth and some were crazy cheap ($2 celery, $2 avo) in comparison.

I guess I'm wondering when the best time to go is? I went at 8am on Saturday but I've heard people getting amazing bargains on Sunday afternoon?

  • Just before close

    • What's the selection like at that time? Is it rubbish quality?

      • Just them trying to get rid of as much stock so they don't have to transport it/less fresh the next day they're open.. from my experience at queen vic markets

The last time I was at the markets, Flemington in Sydney and VicMarkets in Melbourne, I remember things being much more than 25% cheaper than Coles/Woolies, etc.

About an hour before closing is the best. They're trying to clear whatever they have left. What you can get often depends on your luck though, so if you want something specific, go a little bit earlier.

Yah I said at least. I saw some great deals on vegetables. You'd walk out with 5kg for the price of 1kg from coles.

Best example I had was $1 for two kg of beetroot!

      • I haven't been for a long time so thought the price difference might've narrowed! They're closed by the time I get back from work and too lazy to head out on the weekend! 😊

  • I bought two shopping bags full of kiwi fruit for $5 near closing time. I froze them right away and used them in smoothies. The smoothies made me violently ill, so I threw out all the frozen kiwi fruit. I guess I paid $5 to dispose of spoiled fruit for the vendor.

I've not heard of someone getting food poisoning from fruit before. Surely if they were spoilt you would have felt/smelt it? Did you blitz the skin too? Possible that it had stuff on there.

I thought Flemington market only do produce in most part of the area on Saturday? On Sunday they still do produce but it's a lot smaller area, mixing with non produce.

    • hmm yes I think you're right, seems that Saturday is the main day for the public.

      • I went there on Sunday once and I prefer the Saturday one. Organizer should have one like Saturday for Sunday as it's much better.

  • Any time if you have coffeeinyourveins

  • Flemington Markets is in Flemington, not Homebush. FYI.
The best time to go is Saturday morning. That's when you can shop for the freshest fruit and vegetables.
However, if you want the cheapest, you'll have to wait until almost closing time.
They close at 2pm, and the gates start closing from 12pm - that is, not letting cars drive in.
I agree that it's cheap. Sometimes you can get a box of apples for $5 and a box of bananas for $5.
If you don't need boxes of produce, then just buy a kilo here and there so you can pick the freshest.
My parents used to go every Saturday when we were kids.
Just be careful not to buy too much food close to expiry because you just end up throwing it out.

  • Flemington Market is good if you have a large family who can quickly consume vegetables.

you can certainly get great deals there but it's a hit-and-miss, you get a box of grapes for $12 but then what will you do with so many grapes? You get a box of mangoes ( almost ripe) for $ 10 but the smell of ripe mango will hit your head.

Once I got 8 kg of watermelon for $ 1 and was excited took home but then after eating half I have to find someone to give it away.

If you don't mind getting a great deals and eat and throw away rest then you should make efforts.

The hardest part is getting in and out and finding good car parking space which will take away your most major time of your weekend. Is that deal worth or just buy from your local grocer the items you want, pay extra but you don't throw away the stuff.

i avoid buying my greens from C or W and support small greengrocers as they are the more family-oriented business.

Yeah I've realised this, I guess it'll be good to go half with a friend or something.

Seems that when we went it was the 'sweet spot'. We got in at 7:30AM and found a spot immediately, no lines, when we left at 9:30AM though the lines to get in were down the road!

  • The best deal starts by 11 am and after, 7.30 am vendors are still setting up their stall and they are not offering any discount.
