Comes out as $8.27 AUD (including GST) delivered with store coupon (DIY3USD3) OR $7.89 AUD if you have coins available (which reduces price by $0.38)
If it's the same for everyone you might want to update your title and description OP

    • Great find. Added.
Note I only checkout on AliExpress using USD as my Bankwest Platinum MasterCard Forex is better than the one Ali uses

    • +5

Cheers! Got the USB-C version for $12.68 (incl GST) delivered using that code

N.B. This does not come with a jewel case.

Hopefully someone comes out with a external SSD shaped as a slightly thicker 3.5" floppy (so it can have a USB-C port on it), with a functioning slider and a magnetic disk

  • +1

Probably the only way cassette are likely to "make a comeback"

That, or something like this 'Awesome Mix' cover! ;)

  • +4

Micro USB connection… almost as old tech as cassette…

    • data speed is the same though as usb-c

  • +2

Got one. Love it and now I can re-use in style my sata drives lying around.

  • how did you get $7.51….mine says $10 even after applying the code

    • Are you selecting the micro-usb version rather than the usb-c?

      • I ended up getting one of each but the price was kinda expensive 26 dollars for the two, I don't think I really got a bargain like the others and also it says it will take over a month to get here wowzers so loooooooong.

        • They seem to be over-estimating shipping time these days.
Better than the bad old days of 3 weeks estimated, actual 12 weeks.

  • Thanks! Picked up the USB-c version for AU$11.58 with the Macquarie card.

    • is the usb-c version faster

      • i think they are the same speed

      • yes, usb-c is faster

Probably the only way cassette are likely to "make a comeback"

There's a small comeback among the Gen Z crowd, who like the novelty. From some random news article about it….

"Popular artists like Taylor Swift, Harry Styles and Billie Eilish have released their albums on cassette over the past two years, with more to come later this year"

"CNN has reported that Gen Z is also flocking to the flip phone, film photography, vinyl records …."

    • +2

Fake news: They won’t have the patience to handle it.

    • +2

There's also Indy artists that are selling cassettes on Bandcamp as options for their music too.

      • Why would one bother. It's magnetic tape that are crap quality and easy to damage. May as record whatever digitally first to a PC and burn them to a CD for better quality, cheaper and much much faster. Tapes will never be a thing that come back. Just no logic to doing so.

        • Agreed. It's almost like this niche of artists are trying to do a vinyl like revival. But tape was always bad. Players had hiss reduction buttons lol.
I've even seen artists releasing VHS too.

I think it's just the 80/90s nostalgia going overboard.

@Subere: Do you criticise people for owning old vintage cars?

Tapes and walkmans are tactile, non-digital. Nobody is tracking what songs you listen to, or how often. You don't need an account with creepy Big Tech to access the music that you paid for but don't own.

            nostalgia

Gen Z were not born when tapes were common. They grew up in a digital age where nothing is "owned", there is no physical product. Only a link, or a digital object - which could be removed at any time because the terms and conditions say so. Even the terms and conditions can change at any time.. because the terms and conditions say so. Maybe now you get why some Gen Z people are looking back at cassettes and appreciating what they were - regardless of inferior sound quality, they are uncoupled from the ocean of online annoyances and dependencies that in many ways are what's gone "overboard", to use your term.

            • @cerealJay: Comparing Vintage Cars to Cassette tapes is not a great analogy really.

This is more about quality of tapes vr digital. People do buy "CD's" and can play on "current" small portable CD Players. These are owned and not tracked nor cloud based.

So in this instance Nostalgia relating to cassette tapes can remain just that, in the past alongside VHS and Betamax tapes :-)

Vintage cars however can be a thing of beauty and all look different and certainly a lot of nostalgia can be linked to those.

              • @Borg:

This is more about quality of tapes vr digital.

                Obviously it's not about that.

CD's are ugly, and too big for convenient portable use. They scratch easily, and skipping was a problem. "CD walkmans" were never as popular as tape walkmans. I owned a Sony walkman which had the extra feature of recording from the FM radio or the microphone. No CD walkman ever did that.

When you say "tapes can stay in the past"… you say that like you have influence over the matter!

I would not buy tapes OR vintage cars. The whole point is that SOME young people are enjoying tapes. Your disapproval is irrelevant.

  • +3

I would buy one for my 3.5 inch external HDD iff they made one to look like a VHS tape

  • +1

Does it come with a pencil to rewind ?

  • Probably the only way cassette are likely to "make a comeback"

if the records have then tapes must be next
side note: can someone please explain why the records have come back

    • +1

People got bored with clear sound of digital (often compressed depending on where it is listened from) and like the rustic, scratchy sound of a record. It's more involved, having to handle the record properly, clearing any dust off before playing, checking the needle (stylus) is clean, then the satisfaction of hearing the hissing/clicking sound as the needle takes it place and record spins before the first track plays. Oh, and lets not forget the skills learned like placing the needle bang on on a specific track. All adds to the music sounding better right……right…..mmm, perhaps not but oh the nostalgia and more rustic/raw sound :-)

      • +1

Sounds like just audiophiles who have too much free time to go through all that to achieve great sound.

Most busy and time-poor people now prefer instant access to clear digital sound.

        • And drinking skinny decaf with almond milk with dash of Turmic while driving their Tesla.

  • Are these 30 60 90 or 120 min in capacity

  • If you plug a USB Y cable into these cases, will they work as a TV attached harddisk for time shifting? Currently I have an Orico case with a HDD but the TV won't detect it. Basically, do I need to buy the Y cable for this functionality?

    • Likely yes, assuming your TV supports recording for time shifting.
The HDD might need a little extra power to spin up.

      • Yep, tv supports it. I'll give it a shot and buy one.
        Thanks for your response @ESEMCE

  • Don't forget to clean the heads with metho and a cotton dip, but leave the capstan roller alone.
