  • Tried these new down jackets in a store and they’re nothing like the previous version. The nylon outer is a lot thinner but the major disappointment for me was that the black is not black but more like a shitty blue

    • When buying the new gen jacket against the older version, i went with the older version strictly just for the cuffs on the older one are elastic which traps the heat and block snow/rain from getting into the arm. I heard the new ones eliminated this feature and your arms can move freely up and down. If you like this feature, go with the new one. Also, the new one has an adjuatable hoody while the old one doesn't.

  • I have the previous version and it’s so good for its weight. Macpac felt so bulky and heavy. However for the price can get two to three Macpac jackets.

This isn't comparable to a normal Macpac jacket. You're paying big bucks for the 800 fill, which is essential for some applications (e.g. hiking). The Macpac Icefall is the closest equivalent to this jacket, but if you are buying this for performance and can get the clearance colour at $300 I'd definitely go the Icefall over this.
      https://www.macpac.com.au/macpac-mens-icefall-down-jacket/11…
Waterproof treated down, and synthetic insulation in places that otherwise compress (e.g. shoulders). The Icefall is probably best compared to the Arc'teryx Cerium which is normally $580.

I bought Patagonia for ~$269 and it is very good. Wore it in -10c temperature in Himalayas with an Aldi merino tshirt and it was cosy.

Didn’t know about Icefall but there are two reviews in the first page that say the jacket is not warm.

Was looking at Rapha 850 fill for $220 but got sold out before I could decide.

Genuine question: why do people buy Patagonia when the equivalent North Face, Kathmandu, MacPac can usually be had for half the price?

Is Patagonia much better in quality? Cause it definitely doesn't look better especially for you can really look that great with these types of jackets anyway?

    • +4

People like the idea that they're supporting a company that is more environmentally conscious. I have two jackets and they've held up very well. They also offer free repairs on items.

But also just to flex that they can afford Patagonia.

    • I researched a lot of jacket options because I needed to replace both my down jacket and rain jacket for my hiking kit. Patagonia is great value for both these options.

I know some of their everyday wear is expensive but if you're looking to get some quality hiking gear without breaking the bank, Patagonia is great value.

    • Other outdoor company uses RDS rating for their down source. While patagonia uses Advanced Global Traceable Down Standard (Advanced Global TDS) which they pioneered before other outdoor company start to implement measures of sourcing their down. Also AGTDS is more strict and have more stringent. Hence not many outdoor company are certified this way. Just to show how invested Patagonia is to the welfare of animals, human beings and to mother nature.

    • Correction: *can't really look that great…

    • An actual answer.

Their materials, fit, and finish are in the top 5 companies for outdoor gear.

If you are a medium to muscular build and average to tall height most of their products will fit you will very well.

They also have an excellent warranty on their gear, and will offer repairs for a very fair cost rather than sending useful gear to landfill.

    • North face and Patagonia are premium brands and have similar in quality for many lines, north face just targets a more sporty market while Patagonia focuses on green/ethical. Kathmandu and Macpac are in a totally different market segment focusing on budget.

    • Kathmandu is nowhere close to Patagonia in terms of quality, plus Patagonia products usually fit/look better. I've had both products and I won't recommend Kathmandu. It's not warm enough, and its zipper sucks. North Face is great too though it has a wider range of products, and the price may vary. Dunno about Macpac.

  • Will they sell me one if I don't work in the finance industry?

    • Since this one is not a vest, you'd be fine mate.

  • Jesus what a price? Are the substantially better in comparison to Kathmandu or Macpac?

    • +1

      Yes

  • Paddy Pallin is selling the Navy Blue for the same price: https://www.paddypallin.com.au/patagonia-down-sweater-hoody-…
The one without the hood is significantly cheaper though: https://www.paddypallin.com.au/patagonia-men-s-down-sweater-…

  • Can't see any Ozbargainers scrambling for this after they've monstered the Timberland $19 deal the other day from Mitre 10
