Looking to Buy Either Mercedes GLC 43 AMG or Audi SQ5

Hi OzBargain family.

I am debating between the new Mercedes GLC43 AMG vs Audi SQ5

Context - looking to buy SUV, budget 100-130k.

I did test drive BMW X3m40i but not feeling it, Volvo XC60 B6 but I don't think it is worth the 100k ish price tag. Looked at Macan S/ GTS - Porcshe sales suggest that the boot in Macan might be a bit small, better to go with Cayenne or Cayenne S/ Cayenne E-hybrid. RSQ3 - Audi is not taking orders, due to a supply shortage. I've driven a Porsche Cayenne over 10yrs ago, it is a great car without a doubt and fairly reasonable to maintain but fast forward to the 2018-2019 2nd hand price is around $120-$140k with 20-30k on the odometers.

For the price range around 100-130k ish, I'm leaning towards a new car due to the current market, 2nd hand / near new are a similar price to new cars.

As much as I prefer Audi myself but I'm a bit concerned about the Turbo Diesel resale of SQ5… and Merc dealer's customer service is such a snob compared to BMW, AUDI or Volvo.

I would like to seek some owners feedback from Merc or Audi owners.

Thanks

        • love to have a Rx7 but not sure about rebuilding the engine or dealing with the Apex seal..-_- and Aussie Rx7 prices is overhyped!

    • whats is your experience with Levante?

Reliable? fast? how does it compare with the german brands?

      • Book a test drive and have a look yourself.
If you want a fast car get Porsche GTS.

  • Honestly people missed the boat 2 years ago when Alfa 4C's were selling for 65-80k when covid hit, all gone back to 100k.
Fun sporty coupe > non-EV looking like a real estate agent.

    • I was actually planning to get a 4C a couple of years ago. Or a nice 981 Cayman. But I just missed the boat. And refused to pay extra.

But instead I managed to get a low mileage 987.2 Manual in the mid 50s. Which I only recently sold unfortunately to ease some of the interest rate pain on the mortgage.

These sports cars may be desirable and yes inflation has come up. And they come from a great era of modern/safe, however still being analogue.

But with the interest rates going up. There are less people that had extra money to fool around with toys. These prices will either come down, or stay flat for a long time. At least until we go full EV.

  • Why not buy both and return what you don't like?

  • Tesla Model Y Performance of course. Anything else compared to it is just SLOW trash.

    • bcoz im not after an EV at the moment. let me enjoy the last of dino juice-powered cars

      • enjoy the last of dino juice-powered cars

Go all out then. RSQ3 is in your price range.

The V5 sounds amazing and is effectively a Lamborghini V10 cut in half.

Couple of mild mods and you're doing sub 4 second 0-100's and sub 10 second 1/4 miles in a compact SUV.

          RS3/ RSQ3 comes with an Inline 5 engine :)

Audi Dealers stop taking orders for RS3 and RSQ3 and no stock available sigh :(

  • Audi SQ8

    • out of my budget :\

Surprising you aren't considering the Tesla Model Y performance. I had euro cars before and now have 2 Teslas. Would never go back, We've never used any other charger other than our ones at home, that's more than enough for most people. So much more positives than negatives when comparing EVs to ICE cars.

    • +1

If only we could get a decent range of EVs that isn’t Tesla. Plenty of fans for Tesla, but a lot of people don’t want to support musky either.

If i was in that market I’d be looking at an Ioniq 5. Looks heaps better than a Y.

    • I've driven Tesla Model 3 performance. and I do see the appeal of Tesla n other new EVs in the market.

however, I'm after the last of ICE cars before everything turns into EVs.. let me enjoy the noise of an engine and loud-ish exhaust

      • +2

Fair enough, but be prepared for massive depreciation.

      • Our kids will grow up thinking cars that make noise are odd…our generation is just used to cars making noise. I used to think the same as you, but I quickly got over it when I compared the many other benefits of EVs.

        • +1

too bad, the young generation will never get to experience the joy of combustion engine cars.

In the future ICE and EVs will co-exist, and Synthetic fuel is the answer moving forward. EV ain't that green as we all think.

EV cars are boring.. yes they r cheaper to maintain, takes forever to charge and battery lifespan of 8-10yrs and cost of battery replacement is still not cheap or viable to own a 2nd car EV.

          • +2

@Killer Inc: The joy of a combustion engine? Noisy, smelly, hot, vibrating, slow to take off, needing oil changes etc what’s to love?

True EVs will be a bit sanitised, but the neck snapping torque….

Synthetic fuel is not really viable in decent quantities it’s just not energy efficient enough. It’ll be a niche product for Luddite’s.

            • @Euphemistic:

Noisy, smelly, hot, vibrating, slow to take off, needing oil changes etc what’s to love?

EV is like making love with blow up doll , without all the mourning noise , pheromone smell , steamy sweats , trembling climax , building up the urge , and squirting wet.

But you still get to ejaculate in 2 seconds by rubbing one out yourself. If that's your thing of joy.

              • @dcep:

EV is like making love with blow up doll

Nah I think it's more like making love with a sexbot 9000 lol.

            • @Euphemistic:

The joy of a combustion engine? Noisy, smelly, hot, vibrating, slow to take off, needing oil changes etc what’s to love?

Here you go lover. New EV Dodge Charger still has that "V8 thunder" https://youtube.com/shorts/OPnBMmDLULU?feature=share

And at the end they mention it's not a speaker. Some kind of mechanical auxilary system that is blowing air and making that noise.

          • @Killer Inc: If you want that you are going to have to go C63 or GLC 63.
            The 43 will sound muted

          • @Killer Inc: Definitely viable to own 2, I do. You're living a bit backyards, don't read so much BS from the oil loving folks…it's not all true :)

          • @Killer Inc:

the young generation will never get to experience the joy of combustion engine cars

This is silly - you're ascribing sentimentality to something you grew up with. That's all, nothing more. There's nothing inherently "joyful" about combustion engines.

How old are you? (serious question - I reckon this probably determines your attitude towards this).

Someone from the 1800s could just as easily say that your generation never got to experience the joy of horse-drawn carriages. Is this something you ever think about? Or do you never think twice about it because it was just never a part of your life?

FWIW, cars are fun, and you should get whatever car you want to get, and that makes you happy, but there's nothing inherently special about combustion engines beyond the fact that you happened to be born in that particular moment in time.

            • @p1 ama: relax.. this is just an open discussion, I'm after. some feedback or share experience about SQ5 or GLC43.. that's all. If you cant contribute anything related to SQ5 or GLC43.. move on :)

everyone is entitled to their own experience and what they want.. I want ICE car that's all..

maybe EV in a few years time..

              age - mid-30s - old enough i guess? ?

              • @Killer Inc:

relax.. this is just an open discussion

And that's the nature of my post(s), just an open discussion.

everyone is entitled to their own experience and what they want.. I want ICE car that's all..

This is exactly what I said - did you even bother to read? "FWIW, cars are fun, and you should get whatever car you want to get, and that makes you happy"

maybe EV in a few years time..

I never said anything about EVs. Where did I mention EVs?

My point is just that you're overly compensating for wanting what you want and trying to cloak it all in overly emotional terms. Basically your argument is the tired "my generation is best" nonsense - which is what every single generation has mistakenly believed throughout all of human history. If you want a combustion vehicle, just get one, no need to make yourself out to be the saviour of humanity.

    • Why two, one not reliable enough ?

      • I live with a family, with that attitude I understand why you live by yourself in your jealous little world LoL

  • Maybe not what you are looking at exactly but Mazda recently released a CX-60 which is more geared toward the luxury SUV market compared to normal Mazda's.

Top of the line without additions is $80k
    https://www.mazda.com.au/mazda-news/first-ever-mazda-cx-60-p…

I test drove one in Japan and was surprised of the quality. I own a CX-30 and it's similar, but way nicer. It has an inline 6 3.3L turbo (in petrol or diesel), with a juicy hybrid engine as well.
I also test drove a SQ5 and it was much smaller and sportier but maybe my bias coming into play as a Mazda owner- I preferred the CX-60 and would hands down buy it for the reliability sake.
Also Mazda service is soooooo much better than I've heard of some- particularly my brother experiencing with his BMW X4 m50d.

Order now for June delivery, apparently.

    • Good shout.. thanks for sharing..

  • I feel you mate. I'm trying to decide between getting a gold watch, so everyone can see Im cool, or just getting a T shirt that says "im rich and cool".

  • @Killer Inc curious, what do you do for a living and how are you set financially that lets you afford these cars?

I earn 200k pretax but can’t ever see myself buying anything like this because of affordability.

    • If you earn $200k but support a family on it as a sole income earner then it makes sense that affordability is your issue, but if otherwise, your other expenses are the issue!

There are plenty who earn less and have the cash to buy $100k + cars.

    • I work in the Tech industry, similar earning to you, and partner on a higher salary

Got properties as passive income, and our accountant worked out a budget that works for us.

Ensure we are covered in preparation for further interest hikes.

      • Thanks, I am in tech too.

Curious, what your combined income, and income from properties, monthly budget is like. Wonder how other families live.

        • +1

I might skip the combined income n properties part for privacy.

however, as for the car repayment, it worked out to around 1—1.5k ish monthly pending your finance arrangement for 5yrs.

If you can factor in 1 - 1.5k a month into yr budget, worth exploring your options!

PS: not financial advice - ask yr accountant to work out what is best for you

  • +1

Thanks, good luck with your purchase. What ever you end up purchasing hope you enjoy it.

  • Hey OP, curious to see what car you decided on? I’m in the same boat and the wife and I cannot make our minds up.

    • +1

I bought the GLC43 AMG in the end and there is a promotion, price around $127-140k pending on spec options etc.

Let me know if you do go ahead with GLC43, I'm looking for a PPF group discount

As much as I enjoyed the SQ5, I'm just unsure of Turbo Diesel in this current car market, as the industry heavily pushing toward Hybrid, EVs, and Synthetic fuel.

  • Tesla Model Y Performance > GLC 43 AMG > SQ5

    • Did u end up ordering or got the Tesla model Y performance?

      • I have the Model Y rear wheel drive and the Model 3 long range. To be honest the Y long range is the sweet spot, still very quick and more practical too with the extra range however when I ordered (on release day) they weren't accepting orders for Y long range.
