Looking to Get an iPhone - Which One and Where from?

I was devastated to miss out on this deal to get a new iPhone.

I currently have a Google Pixel 4a 5g with a pretty degraded battery life. I am keen to jump ship back to the Apple realms after a hot love affair with Google spanning a few years. The biggest reasons I want to jump back are: Apple Carplay in my van, Airdrop and stopping the cursed pixelated videos I get when someone tries to text me a video from an iPhone.

I haven't missed paying the premiums attached with the Apple product line so I am keen to make sure I am savvy with what I purchased and how so.

I think my biggest purchasing factors are: Obsolescence window, battery performance (something the 12 mini seems to be poor at) and camera, specifically night mode.

I was thinking of getting an iPhone 13, but I am torn as to which model. So please fire away with any and all suggestions!

Storage needs to be at least 256gb+ as I like to use my camera a lot. Budget is sitting at around $800-1000 but any red hot deals below that margin are worth exploring :) similarity I can be tempted to spend more if it means that I will have a better device that lasts longer.

I also am more keen to buy something outright as I am pretty happy with my pre-paid plan I am on ATM (one of those JBHIFI/Telstra deals from a few years ago)

14 pro max 1 tb storage from apple.com

  • IMO, if you’re going to get a previous generation iPhone, you should get a Pro.

Get the one with the most number of cameras and pixels

  • Not worth going all out on the camera IMO unless you plan on shooting RAWs and editing in a third-party app. Image processing on the new iPhones oversharpens the hell out of them. I'm on an iPhone 14 Pro and photos looked better on my iPhone X.

    • Interesting. I have heard this before. Such a shame and perhaps an interesting discussion topic about when the endless 'innovation' ladder needed to keep this capitalism wheel spinning actually breaks through an equilibrium rendering the new improvements more of a hindrance for the standard user's needs.

I might look into the iPhone X deals and see if I can score one with good battery health. Only apprehension is by November it'll be 6 years since release so I don't wanna get quashed by the planned obsolescence

If I had my time again I would have just grabbed an iPhone 12 and saved myself $1k

    • I tried the 14 Pro camera in store, and I disagree with this. I have iPhone 8, which has the same camera as iPhone X.
14 pro IQ is on another level entirely, especially detail. If you do edit RAWs in a 3rd party app, will be pretty easy if you use the Lightroom app, and IQ will be insane.

      • Ok well nice that you tried it out once in an extremely well lit store. I owned both and you're wrong and I'm not the only person who thinks this - https://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/my-iphone-14-pro-camera…

        • iPhones do have weird colour and bad skin tones compared to Google. The more recent phones probably do over-the-top HDR in some situations. But the iPhone 14 Pro would not have worse IQ (detail, noise) than my iPhone 8, which has a sensor about 1/5th the size and a much smaller lens. I get the most out of my phone cameras by learning their strengths and weaknesses, and using 3rd party apps to edit the results. In my opinion it's worth it. Can't trust the automatic photo processing.

          • @ForkSnorter: Can’t turn off automatic processing. Only option is to shoot RAW and edit in third party app.

            • @Cheaplikethebird: Yep, that's what I usually do. Even the older iPhones can shoot in RAW using the Lightroom app. Results can be pretty impressive.

        • I feel like ever since the iPhone 8 (or maybe the XR and XS) that iPhone camera quality has gone downhill. It used to be that iPhones would have less saturated photos, but I think since the iPhone 8 that photos taken on iPhones are way oversaturated now.

I do recall seeing issues not long ago with the HDR making skin tones or something really weird.

Glad I still use my iPhone 8 which IMO has a great camera in well lit situations.

  • I’m in the same boat, got an android based phone that’s giving me the shits and find myself using my work iPhone SE full time lol

    • Out of curiosity, which Android phone/what problems are you having with it?

I bought second hand from Reebelo and it all went really well, worth considering.

  • Can I ask those who's on iPhone, how easy is it to install non iOS store .ipa files nowadays? Is it still finicky faffing with dev certificates that needs refreshing every x days?

More apps than ever these days and I want to try full versions of Android apps out before settling down and supporting the app developer of choice, but with functions stuck behind a paywall it can be hard to make the decision. Been a long time since an iPhone user and had a play with a friend's last week I thought it was great.

  • I bought a refurbished iphone from Green Gadgets eBay recently. Used one of the monthly eBay codes to take around $250 off the price. I got an iPhone 13 Pro Max that was ‘as new’ condition. Listing was pretty spot on as the battery health was still 100% and no marks anywhere on the phone. Was happy with the purchase!

  • I recently purchased a refurb iPhone 13 Pro from Mobile Federation on ebay, they also offered 24 month warranty on this particular phone. But they generally offer at 12 months warranty on all their refurb phones.

    Very reputable long-standing seller.

  • I got a refurb Iphone 13 Pro Max 128GB from 'mazuma mobiles' on Ebay for around 1100 with some of the Ebay coupons. Was a 'Good' condition listing, but phone looks almost new with 100% battery health. Can recommend them.
