Flying with Baby Car Sear Onboard

We are flying to Singapore with Scoot with a one year old. We've purchased a seat for him and tempting to bring a car sear onboard. Dreaming to have him in there strapped in during the night flight (apart from nappy change). However we haven't seen anyone done so before and wondering if anyone here has the experience to share?

Many thanks :)

Depends how much your kid likes to sit in a car seat.

Usually you would have to pay for a seat on the plane, if you want to use a car seat. Most under 2's sit on other persons lap.

We've purchased a seat for him

      • In that case it is no problem but it must be a forward facing seat, or a convertible that can work in forward facing mode.

    • Seating the infant on your lap might be okay for a short domestic flight, but a long international flight? Yikes!

  • have done this many times when travelling in the US. it is a great idea and works great.

so if the airline allows it, then defiantly do it.

  • its usually a US thing
they have car seats designed for airplane seats (and cars too), not as common in australia

  • isn't there a bulkhead seat? you get additional leg room as well

I did this when i travelled to Hobart from Sydney last year with a 18 month old on Jetstar.

After booking the flight i then had to call Jetstar so they could "book in" the car seat (probs just write it down in extra details next to booking).
We weren't able to pre check in from home as they had to inspect the child seat at check in to ensure it had all the correct requirements.
First on the plane as they had to install the seat and last off due to same thing.

It made the flights there and back so much easier and also being able to have the seat while we were in Hobart was handy.
From what i gather the main reason you need to notify or book directly with the carrier (jetstar/scoot) is because the strapping they use goes behind the chair and can block things for someone sitting behind you.

  • Thank you so much for all the replies! It does sounds like this is a great solution - with the big brother we used the bassinet but everytime there's a turbulence we have to pick up the sleeping baby from the bassinet - was not fun at all.. With Scoot there isn't a bassinet so we are definitely going to try with the car seat

  • did it before on another airline, no problem. just make sure your car seat's width is narrower than that airplane seat's width.
