Ford Ranger Raptor or Nissan Patrol Y62 V8 - What Would You Choose New?

Alright, so serious question, out of these two which would you go for?

I'm currently deciding between the two, heavily leaning toward the Ford raptor for not just its awesome engine but its all-around utility. The only problem I've been pointed out thoroughly by my old man who is towing nut with his caravans which I'll never do is its 2.5T towing capacity. I will never in my life buy or tow a caravan unless it's one of those little camper trailer setups which run at max 2T but he keeps saying never say never, in any case, I'm heavily leaning towards the Raptor V6 twin Turbo so I can throw bikes and boards, etc in the back, eat sand for lunch on a beach drive or go do some camping, etc in pretty much any terrain and won't face an issue.

On the other hand, we have the V8 Patrol, Ti, or Ti-L which has that beastly V8 that can go pretty much anywhere, do anything, and tow pretty much anything, you lose the tray on the back, costs more, and has a seriously outdated interior in terms of mod cons like Apple car play, etc but it's tried and true and can buy aftermarket center console dash upgrade anyway. I also fear it will be the last V8 of it's kind with manufacturers switching to these twin-turbo V6s now. And rumors of the new Patrol doing what Toyota did with their Landcruiser and giving it a twin-turbo V6.

Note: I have no interest in diesel engines.

I guess my last question relates to reliability, Ford vs Nissan, I've heard reports of both Nissan and Ford customer service sucking, but then again I've never had to use customer service for issues on cars before coming from Toyota, Mitsubishi, etc. I saw a YT clip by a current affair on two people that issues with their fords one where a new raptor that just locked up at 80kmh on the road out of nowhere and another was on a guy whose ford just died and nothing worked. Ford replaced both cars with new ones but that seemed like it had to hit the news before they did anything then there are paint issues for both Nissan and Ford but Toyota also has paint issues. I guess anything can have problems and those are just two examples I found of Ford but heard of a few paint issues with Nissan. Then again many are without issues as well.

TL;DR
What would you buy, Ford or Nissan, New V6 Twin Turbo Raptor or V8 Nissan Patrol?

I don’t know, the whole, hat on backwards, stupid oversized mirrored sunglasses, wife beater tank top, full sleeve tattoo, skipped every leg day look, thick gold chains and bum bag isn’t my thing. I also don’t like to have to force myself to drive like an arsehole… I guess that counts out the Ranger.

But then again, I’m not a pretentious inner suburban soccer mom that needs a massive SUV to deliver 2 shit kids to school, but my husband doesn’t earn enough to buy a 300 series LandCruiser or a Land Rover Discovery, so we have to buy a Patrol type.

    So, for me, it’s neither…

    • +2

Is it possible to have a sleeve tattoo without being a douchebag?

      • +9

I am starting to think that they are a genuine Ford aftermarket part that is offered with all Ranger, Mustang and F-series vehicles.

You sit down with the sales guy, order your Ranger, pick the trim level, pick an exterior colour, pick interior features, engine and driveline options… and then the Ming moll comes out and slaps down a manilla folder full of Oakley Sutro style sunglass options and full sleeve tattoos…

        • +5

          Forgot the vape pen

      • +4

Of course. You can have the sleeve tattoo to make up for your insecurities and ‘fit in’ like the others…👍

So if both of these are out for you all together and you were looking to buy a new car today what would that be?

To go on a bit about your generalized statement though I fit neither of your demographic, can buy a Landcruiser but the new ones suck and are overpriced by comparison to the Nissan.

I’m just curious what you would pick if these two are off the table for you being you obviously care about your feelings so much and what others think of you.

Let me know what you drive. Or what you’d buy instead, should be interesting.

      • Let me know what you drive.

Must be new here… I own a BYD Atto 3 and a Fiat 500. (Spackbace will have the link to that somewhere…)

you obviously care about your feelings so much and what others think of you.

Says the guy asking for purchase validation… on "clearly compensating for something" vehicles…

I dont care about my feelings. I own a hilarious, red, 2 door Italian shopping trolley and a Chinese made EV. I am not the one seeking validation for what I am looking to buy and I also didn't need the requirements that a large, penis extension would offer me. I own two of the least masculine cars on the market. I bought the cars I liked and wanted and didn't care or give a shit what other people's opinions were. I buy cars based on what their function would be, not for the image they portray…

what you’d buy instead, should be interesting.

Something that fit the requirements of what I needed it to do 90% of the time.

I fit neither of your demographic,

        Ok, champ. ;)

@Kmartsecurityguard: I drive cars that don't require validation from randoms on internet forums. My ego and masculinity isn't that fragile that I require a massive truck with a huge engine to prop up said ego and masculinity.

And no, I dont pull up next to people at lights and say anything, there is no need too when their car and their attire speak volumes. And since you went over to my post, you didn't seem to have read it all, especially the part where I said I didn't do it for the environment. Also, a nice latte and a smashed avo on toast sounds much nicer than a whey protein shake and a creatine carb loading bar.

Don't forget to leave enough money in your finance package to get the obligatory 6 inch lift kit, 36 inch mudder tyres on 20 inch rims, the front winch and bar replacement with your 40 driving lights, a tow hitch you will never attach anything to and all topped off with fake plastic bonut scoops, wheel arch flares and "truck nuts".

For someone who "doesn't fit the demographic", you sure sound like you do. Even the fact I own an EV and a Fiat seems to be triggering your ego and masculinity… :D

At the end of the day, buy what you want to buy. If you want the big, loud, noisy, man-child Tonka truck, just get it, you dont need to ask permission from random strangers on the internet. You're a big boy now.

@pegaxs: “ For someone who "doesn't fit the demographic", you sure sound like you do. Even the fact I own an EV and a Fiat seems to be triggering your ego and masculinity… :D”

No you got this wrong, re read what you first wrote, it wasn’t your shitboxes that triggered me. I’ll quote you.

“ I don’t know, the whole, hat on backwards, stupid oversized mirrored sunglasses, wife beater tank top, full sleeve tattoo, skipped every leg day look, thick gold chains and bum bag isn’t my thing. That is what you wrote. you just sound like a complete knobhead.

I also have absolutely no idea how you can gauge how someone sounds or what they look like or that they need financing from a simple forum thread asking about a ute and a 4WD. This technology you use to garner this information is part of the Chinese-made atto? just incredible, still, the facts remain, you drive a fiat 500 and some Chinese battery car you bought “so the rest of us didn’t have to” thanks for that, lucky me!

And yes I had to go look at that thread because I couldn’t believe such a thread existed, I had to see what truly drives a clearly classy woman such as yourself to spend her hard-earned on that car (if you want to call it that) on behalf of every Australian. You should be awarded the Nobel peace prize for your contribution to humanity. And it wasn’t just any car, not even a Tesla but a BYD Atto. And my sincere apologies, you didn’t do it for the trees you did it for us! And to top it off you didn't do it for validation! You just wrote a long-winded post about it for marketing research. Of course, you wouldn’t want any validation driving that, it validates itself and clearly the person driving such a grandeur of technology it is.

But let's be real here for a minute, I simply made a post in the “Automotive Forum” part of this website and you chimed in with your bogan pile of shit statements about people who drive these are all such and such wife-beating mullet wearers. This is how we got to where we are now. You wanted a rise out of people because you and your band of merry men saw one person they could try and pick on in an internet forum but Instead, you got someone with thicker skin. Instead of contributing something of intelligence or just scrolling past you thought you’d stop by and add your shit smear to someone asking a genuine question. You carry on like a (profanity) as you and your circle jerk of internet warriors do in these forums if anyone asks about anything 4WDs.

At the end of the day, Your the person that is driving around in a fiat 500 and a Atto so the rest of us don’t have to.

Thanks for your contribution to society.

OP should be mindful of the fact people are giving thier own preferences.

A motor vehicle purchase is a very personal one.
You should chose for your reasons. No for everyone else's reasons.

There are plenty of "professional car reviews" around if you want to know what the experts have to say.
This is not the place for that.

  • As always. It's your money and your choice.

As an aside. One forum I'm on someone asked 'what colour car' he should buy.

    • Of course, I’m just curious what others think being the Ford is new and everyone that’s driven one has bought one including reviewers.

    • One forum I'm on someone asked 'what colour car' he should buy.

      Yes.

  • what are your needs for either of these?

    • More boot space/tray space, being able to throw boards and bikes and the back, pick up stuff from Bunnings without having to borrow a bigger car than my sedan, and more utility in terms of beach driving and out and about and going camping plus easily deal with bush tracks. I’ll also say there’s a little kid inside me that wants some raw power as part of it.

I currently drive a Toyota V6 Camry I bought for a rep job that initially required a lot of driving which I have since left it was my first ever new car purchase at the time but doesn’t fit my needs at all anymore with my lifestyle.

  • Probably the Ford. You'll need to check if the bikes will fit in the tray, mine would only fit diagonally on my '17 Ranger. Towing, if a $200k+ van appears in the future you can probably afford to change vehicles as well if it won't handle it.

Downside of a ute, no security for anything in the tray, ride quality (may not apply with the Raptor, haven't driven one), wet roads require even more attention than normal, you'll have mates constantly asking if you help move xyz. Upsides, in theory you can throw whatever in the back but in reality most owners baby them and would never think of having a loader dump a load in the back.

  • If you aren't towing a 3t caravan, and it has to be those two, one would think the ranger would be the choice

Theres a reason the waitlist on the landcruiser are insanely long, and there's reasons the wait list on raptors is long.
I don't think the patrol has anywhere near the daily appeal or demand.

(Plus your post clearly leans raptor way, so I'm just hear to reinforce youre existing preference)

    • Yes true, I almost bought the Nissan, 3 month wait, nice engine, heaps of space, etc. only issue is it’s so outdated in terms of tech which kinda threw me being it’s 100k. The new Toyota LC is 100% out because it just doesn’t have any space in comparison to what I want. Sure it’s nice internally but it's way overpriced (in my opinion) by almost 40K in comparison. There are a few other things I didn’t like about the LC as well which a few reviews on YT show in detail.

On the other hand take a look at the new Ford Raptor on YT that thing is just insane all around, wet, sand, mud, 4WD, and rear-wheel drive. It does 0-100 in 5.7 seconds, it’s just a monster with a ton of utility. The only downside is 2.5T towing capacity but if you have no interest in 3T caravans then it doesn’t matter. Apparently and I have yet to drive one the ride is awesome and the thing is insane to drive, most reviewers that reviewed it on YT bought one for themselves.

If I’m being honest I know I’m getting it, I was just genuinely interested to hear this forum's comments and thoughts though.

      • Well, if you order it today you might just get it by 2025

        • Haha true, I was told June to 12 months whatever that means lol.

  • Buy the one you want.

You already have a V8 Nissan, apparently, so why need another one?

    • No, I don’t either at the moment

      • My bad. Buy the one you want. If you ever need to tow a house, you can hire a v8

  • +2

A few of those patrols have sweet exhaust systems in my home town. They actually sound pretty good. So it gets my vote.

  • +2

Neither. These are also massively different cars, so you obviously have no idea what you want, or what you would use it for.

  • You probably just want a Ranger Wildtrak or FX4, the Raptor is a one trick pony if you like doing jumps in sand dunes.

The regular Ranger is superior in every way.

  • Saw the new Patrol recently. Thing is pimpin'.

  • Why not get the New Hilux Rogue or wait to 2024 when they are planning to release the new one?
the new DMAX looks hella nice interior wise.

I wouldnt get the ranger. Got a mate who has the new ranger. Turbo electronics boost control blew a few weeks into ownership.
Still at the dealer 'waiting' for parts. If i was to get a ford. 3 years after the release date where they iron out the quality control checks and defects.

I agree with Nissan its a bit boring the Y62.

  • Buy the new Raptor, and you impress everyone outside of your car. You say you need the tray to throw bikes and boards in, do you, really?

With the Patrol, by the time you own it until 2030something, you are driving a 20 year old machine. V8s might be a cool engine to have, but we also might be having mass-tourism flights to space by then.

    • Yeh your right, really appreciate your knowledge here mate. I’ll just hold off 20 years by then I can buy the Ford Space X Terraformer that comes custom with an exo suit and fly to new solar systems and explore the galaxy. Really don’t wanna be driving old technology around at that time in my life when I can fly into outer space.

I definitely don’t want cars for utility either really prefer impressing everyone outside my vehicle more, I'd hate to think I’d made myself happy as well when I could just wait 20 more years and impress entire solar systems and aliens instead.

Thanks so much for your input here bud, greatly appreciated!

      • As I said, buy the new Raptor, you will impress all the blokes outside of your car.

        And you're welcome.

        • Facts thanks mate

        • +1

As I said, buy the new Raptor, you will impress all the blokes outside of your car.

Hahaha this pretty much sums up the whole thread and reveals the underlying thinking 😂😂😂😂

Don’t forget the obligatory: “and all the pretty chicks will faint and get orgasms continuously as you drive past.
          You’re welcome.”

          🫡🫡🫡

  • Toss a coin if you can’t decide. Patrol more comfortable, raptor more versatile for loads.

  • +2

Whichever you buy, make sure you sign up for the compulsory drive like a (profanity) class, or the douche police will come round and confiscate your mullet.

  • Ford F-150 (coming to Australia soon).

Good choice if you are a patriot.
    https://youtu.be/psLm_Uwh3oc

    • Yeh I saw that, but it doesn’t come with the V8 has the same engine I’m fairly positive as the Raptor.

      • Can't understand why you don't go the whole hog and purchase a Dodge Ram with the 5.7 litre Hemi. Failing that there is always the Chevy LCF 6500XD Diesel with a 6.7L Cummins diesel engine. Plenty of room for you bikes and gear.

A Fiat 500 would be nothing but a speed hump to you.

        • +1

Can't understand why you don't go the whole hog and purchase a Dodge Ram with the 5.7 litre Hemi.

What are you on about dude? Everyone knows "The whole hog" is a F450 with the entire rear end of a truck lol.
          https://cdn.carbuzz.com/gallery-images/2022-ford-f-450-super…

Just import the F450, don't even bother paying to put the steering wheel on the correct side bcoz you want everyone to know about Murica where the trucks are 5X large and any euro compact that has the tragedy of being in an accident with your truck ends up underneath it then crushed by it's enormous weight.

      • Nothing wrong with V6 and Booost. Probably get better better performance actually with the same consumption compared to a regular V8.

  • +1

the Ford raptor for not just its awesome engine but its all-around utility

I love hearing stuff like this then seeing the owner baby the shit out of their "rugged" "utility" vehicle and only ever put a single 5kg bag of soil from Bunnings in it

    • +1

I just realized after searching that it's not the real raptor (I have seen a few of the larger ones in Australia).
Looks like it's just a Ranger with a couple plastic bits replaced so it looks more like the Raptor and maybe gets some extra power.

  • +1

I have a 2022 Patrol. Best vehicle i have ever bought. Heaps of power. So, so comfortable. Will go anywhere. Will tow anything. Seats up to 8 if need be. Yes, has crap outdated entertainment system but you can add Andriod auto/car play for about $1000. I actually like the interior but that's a personal preference. Yep it uses a bit of fuel but what do you expect with a 5.6 litre V8. Lots of space for passengers and internal cargo. The driving assist stuff and all round cameras are pretty good. Great car to drive! Absolutely no regrets here!

  • Do your research on the new Ranger transmissions. There have been reports of issues

    • -1

Good advice. Going by the responses on this thread the OP already has enough issues.

      • I actually don't have any issues, things are actually amazing all around for me.

Good to see I still live in your head rent free though with you still coming back to interject with stupid comments.

        Have a great day!

  • I would pick Raptor for the tray. I ride mountain bikes and being able to chuck a dirty bike and gear in the back is appealing to me. Then just hose it off at home

  • +1

For what it appears your needs are I think the Ford may be a better fit. Newer, better engineering and tech are pluses for it. There have been some teething issues with it, but I’m sure Ford will work them out. You are not towing, so won’t be tempted to tow something heavier that your light duty Ute. (As so many seem to want to)
As an aside, I have been looking at Cab Chassis utes for another reason, but wouldn’t buy a Ford as a basic Ute atm.

I have a 2020 Y62 and have put almost 40,000 km on it mainly towing or 4WD. For what I need it is a brilliant vehicle. It has the paint issue, but Nissan have been faultless on it - probably more keen than I am to fix it with a back to metal repaint. It is a quiet, magic carpet ride that will go almost anywhere and has plenty of power to overtake. Tech is outdated and the wood grain is ‘interesting’, but I couldn’t GAS, I just like listening to that V8 do it’s thing.

FWIW, I think that both of these are ‘last in lines’ for engines, transmissions. With EVs coming, while there will be plenty of tweaking, I don’t think there will be any new ICE design at this point.

  • New ranger is a cross breed with vw I'm led to believe. Rangers have always had loads of issues cars by reading forums. Most buy on the looks not reliability. Dmaxs or mux is tried and tested and as reliable as they come. Patrols are very heavy not leaving a lot of tow room before exceeding the limit. Most now are so overpriced it's not funny but prices are dropping. . Jump onto a couple of Facebook car pages and read the reviews, issues etc of people that ACTUALLY own one.

  • Update:

I bought the Raptor. Ordered yesterday, the easiest decision after seeing the beast in the flesh. The sales guy was so impressed with my mullet he gave me a great deal; now the wait begins…

    • Nice, which colour?
Get a canopy for it and make a canopy lift so you can remove the canopy by yourself and have the best of both a covered and open bed vehicle.

Lol, you purchased too quick and ruined the “which kind of drug addict are you” joke I was going to post though…

      • haha, You can still make that joke btw.

The dealership had about 5 in stock but were all sold and awaiting pickup, I got to see 5 different colours, black, meteor grey, code orange, conquer grey and white. I went with the Code Orange colour, kinda looks like fire engine red in the flesh and definitely doesn't look orange at all it's just such a nice colour with black accents on the car.

And yes I'll definitely be looking for a cover of some sort for the back just not sure yet which one, I really like some of the after-market tonneau covers, especially this one https://www.utemaster.com.au/ute-hard-lid/2022-next-gen-ford… but a canopy is also another option.

    • +1

Congrats on your purchase.. and lucky mullet

  • How much are the Raptors? Thinking of getting one.
