Will it alert OP if it moves from where he left it without OP in it?
AirTag just needs another apple device to transmit the location. Not necessarily the owners device.
I would probably have had bought that too,
There's a few problems with that though
- It still requires batteries (yeah they might last a long time, but still)
- the price is still high
- We still need an apple device at the end (biggest hurdle for me, I want to stay apple free)
This one comes up on the news, so it must be reputable. Hehe.

Or, Apple AirTag
There are three basic types, Bluetooth, 3G/4G GSM, and lastly, satellite communications based.
Bluetooth: cheap but rely on phones with apps or embedded tracking, very limited range and usually no live tracking. Think: Tile/AirTag.
GSM: rely on GPS for tracking and mobile phone data for tracking. These will give you live tracking of the vehicle, but are limited to GSM network range. You will want a 4G one, as 3G could be being switched off soon, and make sure it has the bands that suit your carrier. Think: Most of the ones on Amazon.
Satellite: Rely on GPS for location as well, so very accurate, but do not suffer from coverage issues. So long as there is clear sky, there is tracking. Down side is they are very expensive to run. Think: Spot Trace
You need to know how much you want to spend on the unit and how much you want to spend ongoing. Are you protecting a classic car or a shit box. Is it for theft protection, or for tracking work travelling.
The last thing to consider is… don’t track people with it. It is illegal to install this on your wife’s/ex’s/kid’s/boss’s/anyone’s car without their knowledge or consent. Just don’t.
this is for protection if the car is stolen, I was thinking 4g one for live tracking, assuming it does not use much data.
What kind of car do you drive that you think people will steal it?
2022 Mazda CX9
@SpeedAU: Don’t bother. It’s not a highly desirable car for theft.
@Euphemistic: says the 9news video lol
@SpeedAU: The only people who need a gps tracker for vehicles have highly desirable specialist models that may be targeted for theft or fleet managers that need GPS location for dispatch or ‘safety’
@Euphemistic: You must be missing all those joy rides from youth crimes.

Plenty more, every week on the news.
Couldn't find the one where the boy snuck out on top sunroof to live stream himself getting chased by police.
@Euphemistic: Any car is desirable for car thieves. Read up on Townsville, the “Kids” aren’t fussy, and will take anything not firmly secured.
@Mikefr: it's everywhere … melbourne / sydney / gold coast / brisbane / adelaide
will take anything not firmly secured.
Kids these days just surround you at knife point and you'll handover your keys no time.
@Mikefr: Oh no a massive crime wave - or is it the latest media beat up to scare us into submission again? Yes, cars get stolen, but not likely IMO and especially not a late model big SUV. Someone with a 1yo SUV isn’t likely to live in a high crime area.
lock it, don’t keep the keys somewhere obvious and insure it - but you do you. If YOU think it’s necessary to track your car do it. If some joy riders have stolen my car, I probably want them to burn it out and collect the insurance anyway.
@Euphemistic: Maybe the OP lives in a place with lots of soccer Mums on meth?
@SpeedAU: Lol… just buy some AirTags then champ… CX9… for “theft”… ain’t no one stealing a CX9, ffs. :D
@pegaxs: Link given above.
@SpeedAU: OP going all Mike Ehrmantraut on his high yield investment CX9.
@SpeedAU: And here I thought you had a Skyline or something. I personally wouldn’t bother. Just insure it and be done.
@SpeedAU: OP buy a euro car next time, they come with tracking and sometimes they are worth stealing.
Hide an AirTag somewhere in the vehicle. Easiest option.
