Help Desk Experts - Windows Boot up

Hey,

I need some help 🙏

My old laptop, my cat took a dump on it a year ago… basically only half the keys work(Enter doesn't).

I use an external keyboard.

Anyways, my laptop rebooted into safe mode and yeah…I can't press freakin enter.
The USB keyboard isn't powering up in this mode.

So now it boots up in recovery mode asking me to select a mode.

It's fine to boot in normal mode, but I can't press enter.

I don't understand why the USB keyboard wouldn't work.

Any help? :(

Thank you

Time to retire it for something newer. Look at the refurb deals on here.

You could spend money on a keyboard (not that exxy from eBay, AliExpress etc) and it still won't solve the issue of 'liquid' inside it

Pull the hdd out, put in caddy, access from new device

    • I have a new laptop, but I can't access my data to transfer/save it.

Thank you, but not a helpful suggestion.

      • Thank you, but not a helpful suggestion.

Why not? Your laptop isn't 'new', is it…?!

Replacing the keyboard on most laptops isn't difficult or overly expensive, and you can go back to using it normally.

        • Sometimes you need to remove the main board as I discovered with my Asus.

      • Why not pull out the hard drive and copy the data from that?

You're not reading my problem, and giving me any solution.

It's an Ultrabook, replacing the keyboard would mean taking apart the whole laptop.

I've been using an USB keyboard, with no issue… But unfortunately it's not powering up in the safe mode.

Sorry, if I come across rude but you're not helping the situation.

I'm not sure how to pull the HDD out, but at least that's a potential solution to saving my data! Thank you.

If you have the model of laptop, people would be able to tell you how to remove the hard drive, or you could google how to do it. Then put it in an enclosure to access the data, as mentioned above.

      • I appreciate that, if I get to that stage I'll ask.

Hopefully I can login, I'm going to backup the whole hard drive and I think this laptop may have to go into the bin!

"That stage" is the way that will definitely work. Anything else may work, or may not. The laptop is stuffed anyway, pull the hard drive, then toss it in the bin.

          • @brendanm: I got it working.

I'm not sure why, but it automatically booted in the windows error recovery window.

It just so happens that my battery's had died in the USB keyboard all of a sudden at the same time.

I'm going to transfer all the contents of this hard drive over to my new laptop tomorrow, and yes I think it's ready for the bin even I feel bad because it's actually a really good laptop.

Maybe donate it for free to someone on Gumtree.
            It's still i7, 8gb ram, ssd etc

Right, so all the rude shit and you didn't even check that…

      Damn you're confusing.

      WTF?

  • Anyways

    Windows support was helpful.

I got lucky, and the laptop rebooted by itself.

Customer support let me know I could use an on-screen keyboard 👍

  • Few options, can attempt SFC /scannow in cmd, has worked once in a milli times.
Board could be shorted and you might need to remap enter to another key
    Reinstall windows

If you're game you can use isopropyl alcohol and a toothbrush to clean the motherboard and ribbons, that may help, also pulling the enter key off and cleaning under it

don't understand why the USB keyboard wouldn't work.

Usb drivers not loaded in recovery?
    Legacy support disabled in bios?

Good to see you got it sorted..future reference…try ctrl+m or fn + rtn
Didn't think I had onscreen kB without gui 🤔

Unfortunately only half of my original laptop keyboard is working, and the USB keyboard wasn't.

I just changed the batteries and now it's working, however I'm booted in windows at the moment.

So, maybe it would of worked in the recovery mode or maybe not.

Once I saved everything and wiped this laptop, I could test it.

Now I gotta work out if I can move office 2013 onto my new laptop lol

I wanted to reformat this and give away, barely worth $150.

But I don't have original windows 7 files, it came with.

Appreciate all the help from everyone here, sorry I was really highly strong and really stressed!

  • move office 2013

Clean install and transfer documents etc.

  • why are you still holding on to that old garbage, there has been many signs for you to upgrade already, lol.

It wasn't a year ago, it was 26/12/2020.

  • On Screen Keyboard?
