Does Anyone Make Their Own PSU Cables; Where Are You Buying Components?

Hi

Does anyone make their own PSU cables?
If so where are you sourcing your components (cables, plugs, pins) and what is a reasonable molex crimper?

I’m capable of the job (worked with high voltage). No idea where and what source for above.

    Why?

    • Seems like the IKEA effect is strong with OP.

They recommend using only the cables that came with your PSU.

Because people are dumb and would try an use any PSU cable cause it plugs in not knowing that different PSU manufacturers use different pin layouts.

There should really be a standard for modular PSU cables. Must be horrifying to find out you cooked your components because you didn’t know different PSUs used the different cables

From this and your other recent posts it sounds like you're doing the usual thing we all do and going a bit overboard with customising and pimping out a new build so just a reminder here that you will barely care in 6 months. Not worth the massive effort for what is probably a 2% extra bit of perfection.

    • The cables are a necessity in that the old ones don’t fit so I’m forced to buy something anyway. Oem is $120 and aftermarket is $60 plus. The psu is $250 new! I also need to do it for two different pcs.
I wouldn’t consider it considerable effort however I have experience in electronics.

Regarding barely caring in 6 months I think that’s quite subjective. Everything I own has my flair to it. I’ve found it’s a good way to reduce excessive consumption as I’m more happy with my unique items.

I totally agree with you that I’m going overboard and excessively unnecessary. :-)

You're talking to someone who is exactly the same. I just remember all the stuff I bought to make a custom speaker cable which hasn't been touched since, probably could have just bought a monster cable and came out with more in my wallet.

I would have said exactly this 2 years ago when I was building my PC 😂

Ha! I asked my wife to figure 8 braid my speaker cables. I wasn’t allowed to poked the behind the cupboard for a long time.

Many years ago I got everything from here for a build

It makes no sense - you're not getting any benefit from using custom PSU cables, the ones shipped with your PSU are likely already overkill.

About as useful as a wooden knob on your amplifier to improve the timbre of beethoven's 3 symphony in G major.

Don't waste your time or money.

    • My psu was previously used in a very large custom build and required extended cables. My cables will not even bunch up in the new case and replacement are $60.

I would rather make my own and have them fit.

I used to order electrical components from rsonline.
Carry a wider range than Jaycar

  • OP has a 4080 and want to do some experiments on melting cables.
