I was looking for a Life Jacket to use with my new inflated Kayaks from previous deals but couldn't find nice sturdy as well as cheap life jackets for the family.
Finally, bought these from BCF as they have good reviews, are standard level 100 PFD and on special right now when you buy 2 together. Can mix and match 1adult and 1 kid's, 2 kids or two adult's.
2 for $30. Single is $18.99.
These standard level 100 PFDs are suitable for offshore use as well. Therefore, it's an all purpose deal. I checked them on the beach and kids float in relatively deep water effortlessly and remained on top of the waves all the time.

Uncomfortable, horrible things. They make you legally compliant but that is all. My advice is if you want to be able to comfortably operate while wearing a life jacket, and you want the kids to keep them on, spend the money on a good, comfortable jacket.

In my experience they were comfortable when we used them . Even kids were happy and said it's comfy even after in waves for more than 30 minutes. Otherwise I would have returned them. Having said that, I haven’t actually used them while paddling yet.

Kayaking or swimming with these is not their intended use. They're designed to store in your boat and use in an emergency - like when it's sinking or in really bad conditions.

For paddling a kayak you want something much smaller, tighter fitting and with large arm openings to prevent chafing.

Buy something suitable and comfortable if you want your kids to enjoy themselves. Find something second hand on gumtree and then when they grow out of the jacket, sell it for what you paid. Cheaper than these horrible bricks and so much better for the environment.

      • These foam bricks are definitely not comfortable unless you're on a real skinny end, kayaking or supping is definitely not as it will heavily restrict your movements.

They'll be ok for the kids if they are just sitting in the kayak while an adult is doing all the paddling.

The paddler might be ok for 15min, after that might as well wear a Michelin suit - will be more comfy and give off less rubbing noise.

They said, I've been in a blow-up kayak before - compared to a hard kayak it's already somewhat uncomfortable, so maybe these blow-up people automatically develop more resilience.

  • Are they comfortable to wear while paddling? I was looking at a kayak-specific Seak with larger arm holes. It's only L50 though, so you can't legally use it in open waters.

I used mine while kayaking on the weekend and it was fine. It felt bulky when I first put it on but I soon forgot about it.

    • I suspect must've been a short paddle - IME the small things become increasingly uncomfortable the longer you are out there.

    • Good to know. I'll use my on this weekend or may be next. I am going to be kayaking only 2 or 3 times per season for recreational use and not for sporting, therefore I think these are okay for my needs. Kids will be just sitting in the kayak not paddling, we haven't found them bulky, may be forgot about these once indulged in water fun activities . So far I'm positive that we are going to be fine. I'll share my experience.

nice sturdy as well as cheap life jackets

"Cheap" is also my top priority when looking for safety equipment

    • They are certified for safety and people have commented on reviews about these being really safe especially for kids. Cheap is not automatically unsafe.

while not more streamlined, they are rated better than most sporting life jackets.
These will keep your head above water and are great for younger or less experienced users.

Ones designed for kayaking, water skiing etc, don't restrict arm movement and normally designed for calmer waters, but don't have the extra support and generally rated Level 50.
