Gumtree is full of car scammers.

Didn't know anyone used anything other than Carsales.com.au unless it isn't worth a listing then placed on local Marketplaces.

    • car scammers? the one asking you to ship your car somewhere?

Why the hell would you assume this?

I have used gumtree to buy and sell 2 cars in last decade, both less than $10K.

Overall no significant problems, not much time wastage, main problem was sellers who lie about condition of car and it's service history, but I guess you'd get that on any car sales platform.

Just photo and document everything, inspect or have car inspected, cash or pay id cleared funds before handing over keys. And be willing to say no and walk away. Also I use a secondary phone number for anything internet.

I had major problems trying to buy using carsales.com.au they had a bug in their phone number privacy system that mixed up people's numbers so that I could not actually reach the seller of the car and was being diverted to wrong people wrong car. Also same website, similar BS cars but much higher prices.

So it could be strongly argued only suckers use carsales.com.au because they charge to list, and higher prices if buying.
But if gumtree is charging to list now, well that's just silly.

      • Yea, gumtree is well known for getting responses from scammers. For anyone who’s heard of the scam technique (fifo worker, poor phone service, will send someone to pick up) it’s pretty easy to spot.

    • I once listed my car both on GT and Carsales. Got many tyre kickers and lowballs (including an obvious car reseller who read off a bad script). Couldn't tell where they read my ad from but I'm guessing GT. Eventually sold it to someone who saw my car on Carsales.

    • Car sales is full of tightarses that think their cars are worth gold just because they paid for an ad. Fact.

    Cheap car, Facebook marketplace.
Good car, pay the $ for carsales.

    • how about a 2012 camry?

        Facebook marketplace for sure.

Sold a $3k car a year or so ago, and assuming priced well and well described/photographed, if you don't have it sold in a day you're likely not trying.

    • Cheap car? $30k is not cheap, I've seen expensive cars in FB Marketplace.

        Heaps at $123,456

        • Also loads of Marked FREE - (open to offers/ message for price etc.)

          • @USER DC: Expressions of interest is my favorite

Its a bloody car mate, not a waterfront property on Sydney Harbour.

People are so afraid to put a price up just in case they've left some money on the table and someone gets a bargain and they get sellers remorse. Here's an idea, decide the lowest you're willing to accept, add 10% because nobody will pay what you're asking no matter how good the price is and let er rip!

Sold 2 cars last year, both had almost 0 interest from Carsales, 99% inquiries were from Facebook. Mind you there were a lot of low balling timewasters who clearly were after a bargain to resell (you checked their profile and they had sold dozens of cars) but I won't bother paying for Carsales again. Both cars were around $15k.

I just tried posting my car and it was free. How odd?

How? I contacted the customer service they told me I have to pay as well

Just checked my items for sale and it says I now have to pay $19 for it to be visible.

        They can get stuffed.

You may / may not find this useful.

    • EBay plus - not free.

      • I get paid to use it.

  • I also noticed that the cheapest option of $19 doesnt have the weekly bump to the top so your listing will get buried unless its price good enough to sellf quickly.

    • yes, can't delete and repost to push on top of the list

      • They always do this these days at RealEstate.Com.Au and says "New Listing" eventhough the property's been there for a couple of months already…

This is a very delayed knee jerk reaction to everyone flooding gumtree to sell their cheap cars for triple price. Now that prices have peaked and are on their way down to non-insane levels gumtree is thinking it's a good idea to start charging to list, W@nkers !

    • +3

It's annoying because I'm wanting to sell my previous car, however it's a business…just because something was once free doesn't mean it should be…to call them W@nkers for it? Please set up a site and spend millions on it and make it free for everyone then? LoL

      • They run ads etc anyway? And already charge for premium listings.
Putting a charge (especially $20) on a basic ad is just going to push people to facebook, or carsales

        • The smart ones would still advertise and get HEAPS more traffic now than before due to tight arses not wanting to spend even $20 to sell a car for thousands…LOL

  • Boats are for saleing.
