Help Looking for Laptop and Budget

Finding a computer seems really difficult. I'm hoping I can get some thoughts to help me figure out my budget for my needs, and maybe help refine my needs and wants. I admit I know little.

I'm looking for an all-round laptop to last about 5 years or longer. My current one is okay but I keep running out of memory and then it gets slow unless I close things down. I'm a student and use a lot more than I first thought. My machine has 16gb RAM. I thought it was enough when I bought it and the screen is too small.

I want a laptop with a lot of memory, more than my current one. It seems I'm always pushing the processor and although I'd like a machine to game on, it's important I get the fastest processor I can so I don't buy another computer system in the future.

The only thing I know I want is a really big 17"+ screen. More than the 16gb of the memory I have. Fastest processor I can get without selling a kidney. A strong, steady wifi as my study is on the opposite side of the house and I have live lectures and web cam exams.

I'm an education student. Recent forays into virtual machines have been a bit of an issue. Compressing videos etc sometimes takes forever. I'm a browser hog and have so many things open especially when doing assignments. I don't think I need an expensive graphics chip, but it will be nice one day to play some popular games.

I'm not technical. I've been going through the OzBargain deals and posts. There's so much choice. I had thought about a desktop but if I need to go mobile it's an issue.

If anybody has any thoughts, especially links to laptops for me to look at, it will be appreciated. I hope I explained myself. I don't know the technical language.

Nearest I can find has expired and I am hoping to get something similar or better under $2,500. Obviously cheaper the better and squeeze out as much of a bargain as possible. Or do I wait for Black Friday or just keep watching Ozbargain.

    Why not getting a desktop?

      Totally.

Why would you want to lug a 17ín Laptop around?

  • What processor does your current laptop have?

  • You're probably right. I thought about maybe a desktop and use the lap top at the library and when I'm out for lighter work. I looked at desktop systems but gee there's a lot to think about with all those different parts.

I don't know the exact processor on the system. It says Rysen7 on the label near the keyboard but there's no version. I use it for everything. This looks like the same one. I struggle with the screen size. We all get old haha

  • Have you had a look at the gaming desktops available? You can buy it pre-built. Can even ask them to upgrade components - e.g. RAM from 16gb to 32gb.

  • Do you really need video compression and virtual machines on the move? That will seriously cause laptop issues. Desktop seems the sensible solution as even average desktop CPUs tend to outdo top end laptop ones simply due to the power/battery restrictions.

Also, switch away from Chrome, it's a terrible RAM hog and really any other browser is better these days, plus install noscript to stop the endlessly memory leaks from terrible javascript.

  • As a newby switching to a desktop, I had a lot of choices that were taking too long with what's on Ozbargain. Imagine you're me and see a nice system. Then you think, does it have wifi and if not, is it on the motherboards or do i buy a new component that plugs in. If it comes with 16 memory does that motherboard allow 32, then I'm back to the wifi issue if I switch the motherboard. If I get a medium processor for now and good graphics, can i get a better processor next year, or a better graphic card if i play games. What graphic cards do i get. Does it automatically cool itself. Power supply, storage, does it have Windows, can I add more storage to the board at some point … boom head explodes, and that's just one system. I also need a screen if getting a desktop, so then I'm thinking how that plugs in. Then … what about sound. Many people on here know what they are talking about haha, I'm learning. Good things about laptops is I don't worry about all these things as the lap top has everything. All this is befits researching each component for reputation and what it can and can't do.

Honestly I'm learning. It really is a lot when someone first dips their toe in.

Seems I need to educate myself more before I buy a desktop. Maybe I look at 32gb desktops with a crazy processor and buy the graphical card another day.

Thank you. I'll keep looking at ozbargain because so many people can critique these systems that are advertised. It's already helped sorry good and bad.

  • I'll look at Chrome alternatives. I really like the grouping feature though. It's my favourite part. I used to use Opera but it had some difficulties with some sites although I can't remember what they are.
