I use one of these alarms and find it to be very good. And now it's cheaper than what I bought it for a year or so ago. There are some cheaper alarm systems out there, but what I like about this one:
* Backup battery (in case of power outage) & sim card phone call / SMS support (in case of Wi-Fi outage)
* Good app to arm/disarm as well as push notifications (I get push notifications whenever the alarm system is armed or disarmed or if the alarm goes off)
* Reliable - it's never had a false alarm so far - note: I don't have dogs so haven't tested the pet immune functionality)
* Wireless so easy to install
* Aesthetically designed

What’s the point of having a sim if the sensors don’t work without wifi?
Yeah, I'm wrapping my head around it - looking for ideas.
No, I think the PIR/door sensors use local 433Mhz frequency to communicate with the main unit so not affected by Wi-Fi. I use an Etel sim card in it ($10 per month?), but before when I researched, an Aldi sim card would have been cheaper ($15 per year?). I wanted to go with someone who billed monthly rather than a prepaid service who had 365 days expiry; to help me prevent forgetting to recharge it.
Legend, thanks.
This time I turn a blind eye to the fact that you're paying $120/year instead of $15. But please fix it and set a reminder to recharge, as your OzB badge might be revoked.
Thanks for the kick. I have just changed it over to an Aldi sim card. I always intended to, but never got around to it - I don't want to lose by OzB badge :)
I am here for the ccp comments.
Your phone is made in ccp.
I assume the sensors have batteries? How often do they need to be changed/charged?
They use AAs. Life depends on usage - I had a motion and door sensor and they ran for a few years on original set of batteries for infrequent use.
Do you use rechargeable ones, by any chance? Any issues? Rechargeable AAs are 1.2V, regular batteries are 1.5V.
I've decommissioned the unit so still have the sensors they're no longer in use.
The sensors shipped with akaline 1.5v batteries so I have only ever used those since never changed them :)
@bdl: Why did you decommission it and what did you get instead?
@pizzaguy: Moved house, wasn't needed anymore.
@bdl: Thanks for all the info.
Did you like or dislike anything in particular about this system?
@pizzaguy: I liked the value of it and it just worked without hassle.
The sensors stop communicating when the wifi is gone, right?
Also does anyone know what would be the cheapest sim and plan for such setup?
