Glass Replacement Estimate

Needing to replace this small pane in my bathroom, took a hit from a rock when I was mowing.

Glass was kind of frosted like the vertical piece above it.

Can anyone give me a rough estimate of what the labour & materials will cost me?

  • Cheaper to replace it yourself. Get the glass cut at a glazier to fit and get them to put on some frosted window film.

The call out cost of the glazier will be $150 to $200 and then the glass will be about $50 and the film will be about $20. This assumes it's only a 15 minute job.

    About $5 worth of plywood.

    Glass $25
    Labour $250
    It’s frosted toughened safety glass.
Not film. That’s why it cracked like that

  • Don't know about the state the OP is in, but in my state when I had to get a 3mm glass panel replaced they wouldn't do it. They told me that the rules had changed since the house was built, and now any glass below a metre off the ground had to be replaced with thicker safety glass. Even if that caused problems fitting it to an existing frame designed for 3mm glass.

I considered getting a piece of polycarbonate cut, and fitting it myself, because its about the same price as glass, but a rock would just bounce off it. But I found that it crazes when exposed to the ultraviolet in sunlight for a few years. I suppose that doesn't matter if its translucent.

In the end a glazier came and did that window, and a couple of others that had suffered the same fate but were above the metre height and so didn't require thicker safety glass. That window - removal and disposal of the broken glass, and supply and fitting of the replacement 4mm safety glass - was about $200. Because the window frame was designed for 3mm glass, the replacement thicker glass had to be glued in with silicone adhesive.

By the way the OP's window broke, it was already safety glass.

I'd guess that for toughened glass for that size window he'll get a bill of at least $200-$250.
