Would an Outdoor Backyard Party Have More or Less Flies if You Set up Traps?

Help resolve an argument.

We are having a big backyard party with tons of food. To "help" keep the flies off the food i think if we set up 3 of those Bunnings fly traps that you add water to that catch thousands of flies far away on opposites of the yard, the flies would all go to the traps and not the food.

OR.. because these traps attract SO many flies "basically all the flies in a 1km radius" the food would have more flies than ever…

Any fly scientist?

  • well the fly traps work by that green liquid being an attractant…so surely it would bring them in?

There are heaps of rip off of this kind of device, we used it last time at a picnic and worked well. Had 4 going and the food just all in a central location.

    • Yes it would bring in way more flies in. But the traps work so insanely well they would choose the traps over the food. We have a few of those little fans, they have worked for us in the past. but this a 60 people whole bbq pig kind of party lol.

  • Similar principle to these wildlife deterrent devices.

I've driven past many roadside kangaroos that stop eating grass and watch you drive past. No problems - thanks skippy.

IMHO all this device does is scare them, therefore making them move on, most likely into the path of your car. WTF were you thinking Skippy.

I live in inner Sydney with a Ranger raptor, full ARB gear, and (obviously) immaculately clean recovery tracks.

I need these in case i come across a kangaroo at my local DFO

    Based on experience:
    - They attract flies generally in a 5m radius.
    - They work best (ie, they attract more flies) when they really smell
    - They really smell during hot weather or after they have caught a number of flies, so they might not be that good to have around people eating food
    - If you set them up a week before the party, they might help to reduce the number of flies in the area during the party
    - In my yard, flies become a nuisance when there is something attracting the flies on a regular basis, eg, pets. Once the source is removed, I find fly numbers reduce a lot.

  • Dont have a party = 0 flies.

We used these and placed them around the plates and they worked well, but I guess it'll be a bit costly if you have a huge spread

    • These are great.

    • There are cheap copies of these that work just as well. We use them camping.

  • Don’t use the bottle type traps that use powdered poop satchels. These will 100% attract flies. If you do use them, place them far far away from where you need them. I had a problem with flies a while ago and bought some of these and my fly problem quadrupled in a short time. The fly problem all but disappeared as soon as I removed the traps.

  • Surely it's easier and cheaper just to get a couple fly covers like these

  • Use fans for their turbulence to upset the flies and some essential oils to deter flies wanting to enter the area.
