I like J. K. Rowling! She is a great author.

      • -5

do you just believe anything you read online ?

        • -4

Which do you think is false, I'll gladly cite for you.

          • +12

@beardelune: ok lets start with the non sense anti-semitism going around ? let me guess hook nose something lol

            • +10

@morediscount: B-but the GOBLINS!!! They like gold!!! IT’S ANTI SEMITIC!!!

She’s said a lot of dumb stuff, but 90% of what people think shes said literally are from bizzare interpretations that seriously grasp for any little bit they can grab onto.

She’s certainly anti trans, but yeah id love direct quotes for the others too.

              • +2

@SmoothCactus: She may be anti trans but there's trans in the game so all the game boycott is just silly

              • +4

                @SmoothCactus: Lol

The "anti Semitic" stuff that's popped up recently in regards to JK is purely just the "woke ABCD" community being like "F@#k, our little tantrum isn't working, who else can we try and pull into this to gain more mainstream support?!?! Oh that's right, everyone hates nazi sympathisers, let's portray her as anti Semitic"

                • +3

@Binchicken22: Yes I have to agree. I think J K Rowling is pretty obviously "winning" the breakup between herself and her woke fans.

              • +8

@beardelune: people are really reaching far..trying to cancel her

                  • +9

@beardelune: I'm not the one throwing a tantrum becoz somebody doesnt agree with your opinions

                      • +2

                        @beardelune:

Am I not allowed to express views that differ from yours?

                        There’s the $64 question.

              • +5

                @beardelune:

JK Rowling has a problem with anti-Semitism

That's good, she should have a problem with anti-Semitism. We all should after WWII. If you have a problem with her having a problem with anti-Semitism, then that makes you a disgusting bigot.

              • +8

@beardelune: She portrays goblins as they are commonly portrayed in fantasy.

                As above.

She didn't use a shofar, the game designers did….she wasn't involved in the way you think she was.

Oooh can we hear more crazy interpretations please? I'd love to hear them….shit she may even be everything you say she is, but your evidence is laughably stupid.

              • +3

@beardelune: Using Goblins as an example of anti-semitism says a lot more about you than it does about JK Rowling.

    • +7

why would you be laughing? the game is a roaring success

        • +6

It's above average with its world. Graphically it's good, technically it's average, facial expressions are very weak. Menu controls on ps5 are bad

Also it's not like there's more good Potter games out there lol

        • +3

Long time gamer, and not a big Harry Potter fan. I honestly didn't expect much from this game, but boy has it impressed me.

Open world is big and has a surprising amount of depth.
Combat is tight and feels great.
          Story is engaging.

And then then there are other surprises like what you can do in the 'Room of requirement' (won't spoil).
The game's currently sitting on a 84 on OpenCritic. I honestly feel like it deserves a bit higher.

          Also Ravenclaw FTW.

        • Third highest ALL TIME peak concurrent players in the first week of sales, being Elden ring and cyber punk. Multiple world records for viewership numbers on xbox, critical positive acclaim.

It is by all definitions a roaring success despite how much you want it not to be, that is the reality. You saying it isnt unfortunately can’t change the timeline we’re in mate.

          • @SmoothCactus: cyberpunk had large pre-sales and concurrent player numbers as well. which part of that statistic do you think proves whether the game is good or not?

Ahahahahahaha what!?! Quick someone Levioso the rock this person lives under!

I really, really hate how toxic the discourse around this game is. I know a guy on Facebook actively going to discussions about the game, spoiling the story, and accusing people of being anti-trans. Why go out of your way to ruin peoples' fun like that?

I'm not LGBT myself, but I like to think of myself as an ally. A boycott of this game is just silly imo. Buying a game you like means supporting game developers, and the games industry in general; that shouldn't be seen as a bad thing. Whether we boycott the game or not has no impact on JK Rowling.

    • +5

I don't recall seeing boycotts around the Fantastic Beasts movies. Of which she is actively involved in writing and plotting.

Instead people wanna die on the hill for Hogwarts Legacy. A game she has no involvement in besides collecting royalty checks. And by all accounts is actually pretty good and has positive trans representation.

      • +6

Rowling had more money than the British monarchy til she started giving it away. The idea that the 40c she'd collect from my Hogwarts purchase is going to make a difference to the comments she makes on Twitter (???) is laughable.

      • +6

I think the downvotes speak for themselves, but I’ll respond anyway because I feel the need to point out a few issues with your comment.

        1. I do in fact buy plenty of games, but not every game that comes out (Why on earth would I do that? What could that possibly prove?). If you’re questioning how much I want to support other devs, I can tell you I go out of my way to seek out Australian games, just to support local talent. I’ve been a gamer most of my life, and feel strongly about supporting the industry.

        2. You assumed in your comment that I’ve bought Hogwarts Legacy, but I haven’t; I’d rather wait a few patches before purchasing. If you’re angry, or annoyed, or feel wronged in some way by people who have bought it, you can direct that elsewhere.

        3. I don’t need to prove my allyship to you, but I will say that I’m married to someone who’s LGBT, always open to listening to my LGBT friends who want to talk about issues, and have participated in fundraising events for LGBT causes. So yeah, I think I’ll continue calling myself an ally; that’s a call for my LGBT friends to make, rather than some rando on Ozbargain.

        • -7

Whatever clears your own conscience on the matter mate.

You can see the toxicity of the situation and somehow have come to the conclusion it’s the fault of the peoples being vilified and oppressed?
Good work on your contributions to defending trans people here, it must make your “friends” very proud 😒

Also, downvotes? You think that proves anything about the validity of any of these positions? What a joke.

          • +3

@beardelune: But what about the validity of your position? What purpose does being hostile towards people who buy the game serve?

My position on the matter is:

            • boycotting the game does nothing to further trans rights.

            • boycotting the game does nothing to harm JK Rowling’s bank account, or reputation.

            • purchasing and playing the game does more good than harm when it comes to supporting video games.

            • and, given all of the above, people who go out of their way to ruin the game for others and accuse others of being anti-LGBT (as you implied about me - someone who hasn’t even bought the damn thing) are not justified in their actions.

            • -8

@SharkBait: All of those things are false. You’ve just decided that you’re okay with supporting a bigoted transphobe who actively works to dismantle trans rights to the point that she’s quoted by the GOP when they’re drafting antiLGBT legislation.

Go and listen to some action trans voices on the matter instead of deciding that you know better than those who are actually affected by the situation.

Are you really presenting having a game spoiled as in anyway comparable to the shit that trans people have been facing at the hands of JK? Do you even hear yourself? Get a grip.

Don’t pretend you’re an ally. Buy the game or don’t, but if you do, don’t pretend you’re an ally to trans people.

              • -1

@beardelune: Yeah as someone with friends who are trans, I am very uncomfortable with the idea of buying the game.

I'm not sure why people can't see the direct relationship between buying into a franchise that is now associated with transphobia. If you're completely unaware of the controversy and just like HP then sure - no issue… but once you know it's impossible to not know and associate.

I think ultimately people are lazy and don't want to miss out on a potentially good game so they just use poor excuses to justify their position. Unfortunately with such a minority group unless you know someone directly affected it's easy to wave it off as no big deal.

              • +4

@beardelune: You’re again questioning my allyship (“don’t be an ally”) when I haven’t even bought the game. You’re also accusing me of supporting a bigot, when I haven’t bought anything Harry Potter in years. I again ask that you stop being hostile when I’m fundamentally on your side here.

Most people who purchase the game and play it, aren’t doing it to be actively transphobic. They’re doing it because they love games, and they love the Hogwarts setting.

Boycotting the game doesn’t harm JK in any way. At all.

So, given those two things, what gives someone the right to actively spoil the game for others and falsely accuse them of being transphobic?

If someone buys the game and wants to enjoy it, why is it okay to ruin the game for them? If a streamer wants to stream it, why is it okay to attack them?

Playing this game doesn’t automatically make one transphobic. If you took the time to talk to people (without the hostility) I think you’ll find most people who buy the game are in support of trans people and their rights.

                • -1

@SharkBait: I didn’t say it makes you transphobic. But it sure as hell means you’re not an ally.
I honestly couldn’t care less if the game was ruined for someone, it’s so irrelevant to the point.

Do whatever you want, but if you chose to buy it, you’re not an ally.

If you want to educate yourself on the matter properly, there are plenty of trans YouTubers and personalities that have spoken on the topic that could be insightful to you (Jimquisiton or Jessie Gender maybe).

You’re not about to convince me that supporting a toxic TERF like JK isn’t incompatible with being a trans ally because it simply is.

Do what you want, but again, if you’re gonna play it and come online and side specifically against trans people who are upset by the situation, you are not an ally.

                  • +1

@beardelune: I'm aware of the Jimquisition video, having followed Sterling's work for the last 10 or so years. I'm well aware of what they (and other trans people) are saying on the matter - the quick summary being:
                    - this game is inherently tied to JK Rowling
                    - she can use the profits from the game, and her position of power, to further anti-trans causes, and therefore…
                    - anyone who plays the game can't call themselves an ally

The last point is what you're really honing in on in these comments. And that's fine; I hear you and understand you.

My central point is that the discussion around this game has been extremely toxic. You've demonstrated that. You're the one who approached my comment with hostility, when I did no such thing.

My other point is that other folks have no right to go around ruining the game for others. If those people can't call themselves allies in your opinion (and in the opinions of trans people), then that's fine; however, people who want to play the game should be left to enjoy their game, without having it ruined for others.

          • +6

@beardelune: I ran out of my daily downvotes in downvoting your silly comments.

@beardelune: You need to get a job/hobby/life and stop living online.
I bet you spend all day on social media just looking for something to complain about.
Being for something is not your identity, get over yourself already.

  • +2

the world's got to stop pushing this trans agenda on everyone, there is not one single reason to include a trans character in the game other than to rustle peoples jimmies.

    • +1

Agenda for what exactly? To be able to live peacefully without being vilified and murdered?

      • -1

Funny that you don't know the main cause of death for "trans" people is themselves.
If you actually cared you wouldn't be telling them its ok to do something that will increase their rate of suicide.
Why do you hate trans people?

    • +3

Exactly the world has gone bonkers with political correctness. People are now having to walk on eggshells and even stating the facts/truth can get you cancelled just because some can't handle it and take offence to every little thing.
