Domestic Trip with Toddlers (Not Gold Coast)

Hi all

Does anyone have any suggestions for a domestic trip with toddlers that isn't the gold coast?

Regarding opinions about not going on holidays it won't be a holiday with toddlers etc, we are aware it's not like that, however we have a flight credit we need to use and are wanting to get away somewhere and create some new memories, but are a bit stuck on locations.

Any domestic locations that people have travelled to with kids under 5 and would recommend would be most appreciated thanks. Looking to get away for about a week in May or June

probably would help to indicate where you are located?

but what about somewhere like Noosa? can just chill at the resort for a few days

      User Profile says Sydney.

Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Darwin, Hobart, Alice.
Take your pick. (probs not Perth/Broome due to lengthy flight time from Sydney)

Make sure you include a couple of playground trips each day and schedule things you want to do around that.

      • Exactly. OP could go anywhere.
Kids under 5 don't need a lot of stimulation, just fun activities and parents paying them attention.

  • Any reason not Gold coast? Imo kids will have a better time at GC rather than SC unless you plan to just go to beach every day?

ps if you are keen for a drive and want to do SC, i rate Bunyip springs farm stay. We went with some other families with kids around same age and they had a blast. The host there takes everyone for daily farm chores and the kids love it. It is a BLOODY long drive with kids, but theres quite a few stops along the way with parks.

GC is ridiculously overcrowded and contains a very large portion of people I would generously label d!ckheads.

      • haha i guess to be fair its probably been about 7 years since i actually STAYED at GC but even back then when we did stay down there we generally didnt go out at night as cavill mall gets pretty dicey after sunset haha

we usually just do day trips as our toddlers absolutely will not sleep anywhere other than their bed at home, or their beds at grandparents place.

You're not likely to see many of them with Toddlers.
You'll be home well before the (profanity) are out and about.

      • Don’t go to Noosa then.

Regarding opinions about not going on holidays it won't be a holiday with toddlers etc,

Then I have nothing to offer

  • I have taken my young kids to melbourne, sydney, NSW, parts of northern qld and probably lots more places. They have also been overseas to Thailand. (for long periods) I have a 23 year old a 6 year old and an 11 year old so ive been doing it for a LONG time.

I dont think it matters where you choose with kids of that age. Wherever you go there will be something for kids that young but also there will also not be as much choice as for older kids. You can also be pretty much assured that anything you do will be like a magical adventure to them. Just go where YOU want as long as where you go accomodates kids.

P.S i agree with the GC coments, that place is a one trick pony and its a very short show watched by a rabble of bogans.

    Melbourne
great thing about Melbourne is that trams are free in the city
with toddlers its nice and easy as you can go all around the city without them getting tired
    also easier with pram

    u can consider activities like
Melbourne zoo (if you have an annual zoo pass its free, a tram ride away)
aquarium (merlin pass u can consider)
    st kilda for cafe, beach
    shopping
    walk along casino

only warning is 4 seasons in a day, it will rain!
i booked a apartment in the city, with a tram stop outside

TFE check them out the apartments were quite good

  • Cairns
Spend days at muddies water play and free beachside pool
    Then try aquarium
June is cooler so a wetsuit may help…also less humid
    lots of playgrounds and cafes
    Kuranda train

    • Cairns reminds me of the Opening scenes of the "A River Somewhere" fly-fishing TV-series with Rob Sitch (??)

It's a gateway town, all the good stuff is just outside Cairns.
The town itself, not so great IMHO.

I've been on holidays with toddlers both in Pt douglas and Noosa. main key for us, was choosing the correct accommodation; sufficient space, fenced outside area, facilities either on site or very easy walking distance and then keeping them busy from the morning. Both places we stayed at had pools, which do just fine, even in their cooler months.

  • thanks everyone

  • Toddlers aren't that interested in attractions - go to somewhere reasonably local to you. By that, I mean, somewhere that won't require a flight or a long drive. If you live in a coastal area, go country and take them to farms to see baby animals. If you don't live near a beach, just book a cabin/house type place where you can cook meals and make sure it has a bath! (We were offered a family member's apartment and it only had a shower - not easy with toddlers. And bunks! Of course, the three year old wanted the top bunk…).

Just going for walks on the beach, building sandcastles etc will amuse them no end and still easy to take them back to the accom for a nap.

    • ^ didn't read post "wanting to spend flight credit"

      • Oops…

  • We were going to go to Brisbane before lockdown put an end to the plans; there were some museums, libraries etc that I looked into which seemed quite toddler friendly.

Canberra is also nice, but you probably couldn't use flight credits with that.

    • I'd second Brisbane. Catching the river ferries is fun or just walking along the banks. It has a relaxed chill friendly vibe, helpful if you have kids in tow. Plenty of places to visit and eat. I do find accommodation in Brisbane pricey though but maybe you can find an AirBnB.
